In the Kali age, obstacles do not arise for a man; Vyāsa said: Why, in Kali, do they not arise for one who listens, O Padmaja?
For the man endowed with merit, various severe obstacles do not occur; Brahmā said: The fruit of the horse sacrifice is described,
That fruit, dear one, is seen in the Purāṇa called Padma; the horse sacrifice, though meritorious, is not performed in Kali.
And the Purāṇa itself is said to be equal to the horse sacrifice; the merit of the horse sacrifice, which grants heaven and liberation,
Sinful men, established on the path of sin, do not enjoy it; O best one, the merit of this Purāṇa named Padma,
The merit equal to the horse sacrifice is not enjoyed by men in Kali; in the Kali age, sinful men must go to the ocean of hell.
Why would they listen to that merit-bestowing text, which brings about the four aims of life, by which this sacred Purāṇa called Padma is heard?
Indeed, through it, all means for attaining the four aims of life are accomplished; therefore, O wise one, great sacrifices like the Aśvamedha and others are no longer performed.
In the Kali age, the Vedas with their limbs and intonations have gone to heaven; yet, if any virtuous person, full of faith and devoted to the Lord, exists—
A righteous soul, desiring to hear, together with his wife and son, is first born with great faith for the sake of listening.
For a man who listens, no great obstacle arises; but for a reciter, lack of faith arises first.
And greed arises in that listener, O best of twice-born; a terrible delusion, sent by Lord Viṣṇu, is produced.
He causes destruction for the one who listens constantly; day by day, slanderers, revilers, and sinners arise.
One of clear intellect should recognize the form of obstacle that has now arisen from me, O Vyāsa, and thus perform the homa ritual.
With Vaiṣṇava great mantras, with Viṣṇu hymns that bestow great merit, with the Viṣṇor arāṭa mantra and the Sahasraśīrṣa hymn,
With this Viṣṇu mantra, with the supreme Brahma mantra, again and again, and with the Tryambaka mantra, one should thus perform the homa.
With the Bṛhat Sāman, with the twelve-syllabled mantra, and with the mantra of whichever deity the homa is for, one should perform the homa with that mantra.
With one hundred and eight sesame and ghee offerings, and with palāśa wood sticks as fuel, one should also establish and worship the planets, O twice-born.
There, one should worship Vighneśa, Śāradā the goddess of the gods, Jātavedas, Mahāmāyā, Caṇḍikā, and the guardian of the field.
With sesame, rice, and ghee, and with their respective mantras, the homa should be performed in this way, and one should give wealth to the brāhmaṇas.
O dear one, one should give the prescribed fee, accompanied by a cow, as is possible; then obstacles are destroyed, and one attains success in the Purāṇa.
But if one does not do so, I declare his obstacle: disease arises in his body, causing much suffering.
Sorrow from wife, grief from son, and loss of wealth occur; he suffers from various great diseases—of this there is no doubt.
If there is no wealth in his house, he should observe a fast; upon the arrival of Ekādaśī, he should worship Madhusūdana.
With a mind filled with devotion, one should honor Brahmins with sixteen kinds of offerings, and then feed them according to one's means.
Afterwards, having offered consecrated food to Keshava with a solemn vow, the wise person should then eat together with family and relatives.
Joined by his sons and wife, he then attains success; the complete collection of the Purana should be listened to by those intent on righteousness.
Only thus does one attain the fulfillment of the four aims of life, and not otherwise; now hear about the Brahma-named Pushkara, numbering one and a quarter lakhs.
In the Krita Yuga, sinless men and twice-borns listen to half a lakh in full of the Purana called Padma.
There are two thousand verses more than two thousand; thus, when the Treta Yuga arrives, men will listen.
