When she laughs, delighted in conversation, O Daitya, from that laughter arose the most fragrant and excellent flowers.
These divine flowers are indeed delightful, golden-hued, and filled with fragrance, and there is no doubt they grant desires.
Even with a single one of these flowers, whoever worships Śaṃkara, to him Śaṃkara fulfills his greatest wish.
And, O Daitya, from her weeping also arise, without doubt, other such flowers—large and red in color.
But, O Daitya, without fragrance, one should not touch those flowers; thus was heard the speech spoken by Śukra.
She then asked, 'Where is Kāmodā, O descendant of Bhṛgu?' Śukra said: 'At the holy gateway of Gaṅgā, the destroyer of great sins.'
There, a city named Kāmodā was built by Viśvakarman; in the city of Kāmodā, a woman adorned with divine enjoyments dwells.
She shines with ornaments and is worshipped by all the gods; you must go there and honor the noble Apsarases.
By some virtuous means, O Dānava, make her laugh; having thus spoken, O best of yogis, Śukra ceased addressing the Dānava.
That glorious one became silent and turned to his own task.
Thus ends the one hundred eighteenth chapter, entitled 'The Story of Kāmodā,' in the narrative of Cyavana, the greatness of the Guru Tīrtha, in the Bhūmikhaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the story of Vena.
Chapter one hundred and nineteenth. Kapiñjala said: 'From whose laughter, O father, arise most pleasing, divine, and fragrant flowers, rare even among gods and asuras?'
Why do all the deities, O wise one, desire them? Śaṃkara is easily pleased when worshipped with these laughter-flowers.
What is the virtue of that flower? Tell me in detail. Who is Kāmodā, and whose daughter is that noble woman?
From her laughter, O greatly fortunate one, arise splendid flowers; tell me in full detail the qualities of those flowers.
Kuñjala said: 'Long ago, the gods and great asuras, having formed the highest friendship, churned the milk ocean, striving for nectar.'
From the churning by gods and asuras, four jewel-like maidens appeared; Varuṇa first revealed them, and then Soma again.
Afterwards, the sacred nectar was shown, contained in a vessel; the four maidens at first wished for the welfare of the gods.
There was one named Sulakshmi, and likewise a second called Varuni; another was renowned as Jyestha, and one more is known as Kamoda.
Among them, the best and most excellent was born first, O wise one; therefore she became famous as Jyestha, always honored in the world.
Varuni took the form of a drink, arising from the froth of the milk, and Kamoda was born from the waves of the nectar.
The king Soma and also Lakshmi were born from the nectar; Soma, the ornament of the three worlds, beloved of Shankara, came forth.
Varuni was born as the remover of death and disease for the gods; Jyestha, bestower of merit, arose for the benefit of those who seek the welfare of the worlds.
From the nectar arose the goddess named Kamoda, bestower of merit; for the pleasure of Vishnu, she will later take the form of a plant.
She will always bring delight to Vishnu; she will become the sacred Tulasi, without doubt.
The Lord of the universe will delight with her, without doubt; whoever offers even a single leaf of Tulasi to Krishna,
He will always think, 'What return can I give for such a favor?'—thus reflecting daily, he becomes pleasing to Krishna.
Thus, Kamoda by name, born earlier from the ocean, when that goddess laughs, speaking with joy and emotion,
Fragrant, friendly, unfading, beautiful flowers fall from her mouth; whoever eagerly gathers them,
And worships the god Shankara, Brahma, or Madhava with them, the gods are pleased with him and grant whatever he desires.
