सर्वदैत्यप्रहर्ता च प्रजापालो महाबलः । दत्तात्रेयेण मे दत्तो वैष्णवांशः सुतोत्तमः
He will be the destroyer of all demons, the protector of the people, mighty in strength; the excellent son of the Vaiṣṇava line has been given to me by Dattatreya.
एवं संभाष्य तां देवीं राजा चेंदुमतीं तदा । महोत्सवं ततश्चक्रे पुत्रस्यागमनं प्रति
Having thus spoken to that queen, Indumatī, the king then held a great celebration for the coming of his son.
हर्षेण महताविष्टो विष्णुं सस्मार वै पुनः
Overwhelmed with great joy, he again remembered Viṣṇu.
सर्वोपपन्नं सुरवर्गयुक्तमानंदरूपं परमार्थमेकम् । क्लेशापहं सौख्यप्रदं नराणां सद्वैष्णवानामिह मोक्षदं परम्
He who is endowed with all virtues, accompanied by the hosts of gods, the embodiment of bliss, the one true reality, remover of afflictions, giver of happiness to men, and, indeed, the bestower of liberation here for true Vaiṣṇavas.
इति श्रीपद्मपुराणे भूमिखंडे वेनोपाख्याने गुरुतीर्थमाहात्म्ये च्यवनचरित्रे नहुषाख्याने षोडशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred sixteenth chapter in the Bhūmikhaṇḍa, in the story of Vena, in the account of the greatness of the Guru Tīrtha, in the tale of Cyavana, in the narrative of Nahuṣa, of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
कुंजल उवाच- नहुषः प्रियया सार्द्धं तया चैव सरंभया । ऐंद्रेणापि स दिव्येन स्यंदनेन वरेण च
Kuñjala said: Nahuṣa, together with his beloved and with Saramabhā, and also with the divine chariot of Indra, the best of boons,
नागाह्वयं पुरं प्राप्तः सर्वशोभासमन्वितम् । दिव्यैर्मंगलकैर्युक्तं भवनैरुपशोभितम्
Arrived at the city called Nāgāhvaya, resplendent in every way, adorned with auspicious signs and beautified by splendid palaces.
हेमतोरणसंयुक्तं पताकाभिरलंकृतम् । नानावादित्रनादैश्च बंदिचारणशोभितम्
It was furnished with golden gateways, decorated with banners, and adorned by the sounds of various instruments and the presence of bards and Cāraṇas.
देवरूपोपमैः पुण्यैः पुरुषैः समलंकृतम् । नारीभिर्दिव्यरूपाभिर्गजाश्वैः स्यंदनैस्तथा
It was graced by virtuous men resembling the gods in form, by women of divine beauty, and by elephants, horses, and chariots as well.
नानामंगलशब्दैश्च वेदध्वनिसमाकुलम् । गीतवादित्रशब्दैश्च वीणावेणुस्वनैस्ततः
Filled with various auspicious sounds, resounding with the chanting of the Vedas, with songs, music, and the tones of vīṇās and flutes.
सर्वशोभासमाकीर्णं विवेश स पुरोत्तमम् । वेदमंगलघोषैश्च ब्राह्मणैश्चैव पूजितः
He entered that most excellent city, filled with all splendor, and was honored by the brāhmaṇas with Vedic and auspicious proclamations.
ददृशे पितरं वीरो मातरं च सुपुण्यकाम् । हर्षेण महताविष्टः पितुः पादौ ननाम सः
The hero beheld his father and his mother, both desiring great merit; filled with great joy, he bowed at his father's feet.
अशोकसुंदरी सा तु तयोः पादौ पुनः पुनः । ननाम भक्त्या भावेन उभयोः सा वरानना
Aśokasundarī, that beautiful-faced one, repeatedly bowed with devotion and feeling at the feet of both.
रंभा च सा ननामाथ प्रीतिं चैवाप्यदर्शयत् । नमस्कृत्वा समाभाष्य स्वगुरुं नृपनंदनः
Then Rambhā also bowed and showed her affection; having saluted and addressed his own teacher, the delight of the kings,
अनामयं च पप्रच्छ मातरं पितरं प्रति । एवमुक्तो महाभागः सानंदपुलकोद्गमः
He inquired after the well-being of his mother and father; thus addressed, the blessed one, his body thrilled with joy,
आयुरुवाच- अद्यैव व्याधयो नष्टा दुःखशोकावुभौ गतौ । भवतो दर्शनात्पुत्र सुतुष्ट्या हृष्यते जगत्
Āyur said: 'Today indeed all diseases are destroyed, both sorrow and grief have departed; at the sight of you, my son, the world rejoices with complete satisfaction.'
कृतकृत्योस्मि संजातस्त्वयि जाते महौजसि । स्ववंशोद्धरणं कृत्वा अहमेव समुद्धृतः
I have become one who has fulfilled his purpose, now that you, of great splendor, are born; having raised my own lineage, I myself am uplifted.
इंदुमत्युवाच- पर्वणि प्राप्य इंदोस्तु तेजो दृष्ट्वा महोदधिः । वृद्धिं याति महाभाग तथाहं तव दर्शनात्
Indumati spoke: Just as the mighty ocean increases upon seeing the radiance of the moon at its full phase, so too have I grown upon seeing you.
वर्द्धितास्मि सुहृष्टास्मि आनंदेन समाकुला । दर्शनात्ते महाप्राज्ञ धन्या जातास्मि मानद
I have flourished, I am delighted, overwhelmed with joy; from your sight, O wise one, I have become blessed, O bestower of honor.
एवं संभाष्य तं पुत्रमालिंग्य तनयोत्तमम् । शिरश्चाघ्राय तस्यापि वत्सं धेनुर्यथा स्वकम्
Thus speaking, she embraced her excellent son, and, smelling his head, cherished him as a cow does her own calf.
अभिनंद्य सुतं प्राप्तं नहुषं देवरूपिणम् । आशीर्भिश्चार्चयद्देवी पुण्या इंदुमती तदा
Indumati, the virtuous goddess, honored her son Nahusha, who had arrived in divine form, with blessings.
सूत उवाच- अथासौ मातरं पुण्यां देवीमिंदुमतीं सुतः । कथयामास वृत्तांतं यथाहरणमात्मनः
The bard said: Then that virtuous son, Nahusha, spoke to his mother, the goddess Indumati, recounting the story of his own abduction.
स्वभार्यायास्तथोत्पत्तिं प्राप्तिं चैव महायशाः । हुंडेनापि यथा युद्धं हुंडस्यापि निपातनम्
He narrated the origin and arrival of his own wife, his renowned battle with Hund, and the defeat of Hund.
समासेन समस्तं तदाख्यातं स्वयमेव हि । मातापित्रोर्यथा वृत्तं तयोरानंददायकम्
He himself briefly told all that had happened, how it brought joy to his parents.
मातापितरावाकर्ण्य पुत्रस्य विक्रमोद्यमम् । हर्षेण महताविष्टौ संजातौ पूर्णमानसौ
Hearing of their son's valor and effort, his parents were filled with great joy and became content in heart.
नहुषो धनुरादाय इंद्रस्य स्यंदनेन वै । जिगाय पृथिवीं सर्वां सप्तद्वीपां सपत्तनाम्
Nahusha, taking Indra's bow and chariot, conquered the entire earth with its seven continents and cities.
पित्रे समर्पयामास वसुपूर्णां वसुंधराम् । पितरं हर्षयन्नित्यं दानधर्मैः सुकर्मभिः
He offered to his father the earth, full of riches, continually delighting him with gifts, righteousness, and noble deeds.
पितरं याजयामास राजसूयादिभिस्तदा । महायज्ञैश्च दानैश्च व्रतैर्नियमसंयमैः
He caused his father to perform royal sacrifices and other great rituals, with gifts, vows, and disciplines.
सुदानैर्यशसा पुण्यैर्यज्ञैः पुण्यमहोदयैः । सुसंपूर्णौ कृतौ तौ तु पितरौ चायुसूनुना
By generous gifts, fame, virtuous sacrifices, and auspicious rites, the son made his parents fully accomplished.
अथ देवाः समागत्य नागाह्वयं पुरोत्तमम् । अभ्यषिंचन्महात्मानं नहुषं वीरमर्दनम्
Then the gods assembled at the foremost city called Nagāhvaya and anointed the great-souled Nahusha, the hero who subdues foes.
