The demon, armed with sword and shield, charged at the king; as Huṃḍa ran, the king cut his sword.

With keen arrows tipped like razors, the king cut his shield; then Huṃḍa, that wicked-souled one, looked all around.

He swiftly seized a mace and, with light-footed speed, hurled it; the king saw it coming with the force of a thunderbolt.
Then, with his own valor, he struck down the resounding mace from the sky with ten sharp arrows and razor-headed shafts.

With a sword of keen edge, he severed his arm—armlet and bracelet still upon it—and the club fell to the earth.

Then, letting out a great roar like the crack of thunder, his body smeared with blood, he ran about the great battle.

Overcome by intense wrath, he sought to devour the king; unstoppable, he approached the king’s side.
Struck in the chest by Nahusha with a mighty spear, the demon fell suddenly to the ground, like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
When that demon fell to the earth, the other demons fled: some entered fortresses, some took refuge in the underworld.

Seeing the sage who had reached the hermitage, and bowing to him, the mighty Nahusha, filled with great joy, stood there with her.
Just as the battle arose on the field and the vile Dānava was slain, all this was reported to the great-souled Vasiṣṭha.
And Vasiṣṭha, having heard of Nahusha’s deeds, was filled with great joy and blessed him with his benedictions.

Upon seeing you, your mother and your father, O steadfast one, will be filled with joy and swell like the ocean at the full moon.
Thus sent forth by the sage, son of Brahmā, the heroic one, swift of stride, departed in that very excellent chariot.

Having bowed to that chief of Brāhmaṇas, he then went with Mātali to his own city, to see his father and likewise his mother.
