After bathing there with proper rites, he beheld me and remained there, performing worship in many ways, constantly.
There, a certain most wicked Kaulika, assuming a sinful form, offered meat at that time upon Shiva, O beautiful one.
Seeing that meat as well, Vishvamitra then said there, 'This evil deed has been done by a sinner.'
'No punishment was given to him by Sharva, the supreme soul; therefore, I have resolved to pronounce a curse—there is no doubt.'
Thus, having considered in this way, I was then cursed, O goddess, at that time.
In this terrible Kali Yuga, you must remain completely hidden; having thus pronounced the curse, the eminent sage departed.
From that time onward, O goddess, I have remained concealed due to the sage’s curse; if someone performs worship at my particular place—
Then, whatever sin belongs to them is destroyed instantly; those who make an image of me from clay and worship it—
Those who dwell especially at my place here are known in the Kali Yuga by the name Khaṅgadhāreśvara.
In the Kṛta Yuga, it was called Maṃdira; in the Tretā, it was known as Gaurava; in the Dvāpara, it was renowned everywhere; in the Kali Yuga, it is remembered as Khaṅgeśvara.
Resorting to the southern part, O Lady of the Gods, is my place; knowing this, the wise always establish an image there.
Whoever performs worship there regularly attains the desired result; a person gains dharma, wealth, pleasure, and liberation on earth.
Those who offer incense, lamps, food, and sandalwood and the like to the Lord of the Worlds, O Great Goddess, for them there is no suffering—this is true, true, O beautiful-faced one.
Thus ends the one hundred and fifty-fourth chapter, named 'The Greatness of Dhāreśvara,' in the Uttarakhaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the section containing fifty-five thousand verses.
Mahādeva said: Near Dugdheśvara is a very holy pilgrimage site, delightful and well-known on earth by the name of Pippalāda.
There, following his mother’s instruction, the sage formerly performed austerities and produced a being called Kṛtyā, equal to the submarine fire.
Desiring to free his father from debt, the great soul Dadhīci did so; by bathing and drinking there, one is freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin.
On the bank of the Sābhramatī, the lord Pippalāda is concealed; by bathing there, O goddess, a person becomes eligible for liberation.
One must properly install pippala trees there; having done so, O great goddess, one is released from the bondage of karma.
Pārvatī said: For what reason was that Kṛtyā produced? Tell me about her. What did that Kṛtyā do before? Tell me, O Lord.
By which son was she led, for the sake of freeing his father from debt?
Mahādeva said: That best of sages, Dādhīci, came there for the sake of austerity; by that great sage, the supreme soul, great austerity was performed there.
There, an asura named Kola arrived with the intent to cause obstacles; he created many hindrances, indeed, there is no doubt about this.
Seeing this, the wise Kahoda, his good son, produced a ritual for the purpose of slaying, O Queen of the Gods.
By her, the demon Kola, the great asura, was slain; from that, a great sacred place arose, which in the Kali age remains hidden, O Parvati.
Thus ends the one hundred fifty-seventh chapter, named Pippalada Tirtha, in the dialogue of Uma and Maheshvara, in the Uttarakanda of the glorious Padma Mahapurana, comprising fifty-five thousand verses.
Mahadeva said: Then one should go to Bhutalaya, the sacred place that removes sin; Bhutalaya is where the banyan tree stands, and to the east is the sandalwood tree.
A person who bathes at Bhutalaya on Krishna Ashtami, having fasted, and gives black sesame seeds, does not become a ghost after death.
He who offers a water pot with sesame seeds for the ancestors, frees his forebears from the state of ghosts; there is no doubt about this.
By bathing in the name of one whose ancestors are ghosts, he is released from ghosthood, especially on the fourteenth or eighth lunar day, in the morning, with pure water.
