Those whose minds are filled with happiness suddenly fall; whatever actions are performed here, their results are enjoyed there.
This world, O king, is the realm of action; that is known as the realm of results. Subahu said: These faults of heaven that you have described are indeed great.
Those worlds which are eternal and free from fault—tell me of them, O twice-born one. Jaimini said: From the abode of Brahma itself, faults indeed exist, O king.
Therefore, the wise do not desire attainment of heaven. Above the abode of Brahma is that supreme realm of Vishnu.
They know it as the auspicious, eternal light, as the Supreme Brahman. There, foolish men and those absorbed in sense-objects do not go.
Those afflicted by hypocrisy, delusion, fear, hostility, anger, and greed; but those who are free from possessiveness, ego, duality, and whose senses are restrained—
And those devoted to meditation and yoga, such virtuous ones reach there. All this I have told you, as you have asked me.
Hearing thus the qualities of heaven, Subahu, the lord of the earth, addressed the great-souled Jaimini, foremost among speakers.
Subahu said: I will not go to heaven, nor do I desire it, O sage. Since you have spoken of its fall, I do not perform that action.
O illustrious one, I do not give charity for the sake of its impermanent result. Because of the desire for the fruit of charity, a man indeed falls.
Thus having spoken, the righteous Subahu, lord of the earth, will worship the lord of gods, beloved of Lakshmi, through meditation and yoga.
I will go to Vishnu's realm, free from burning, dissolution, and fear. Jaimini said: You have spoken truly, O king, filled with all auspiciousness.
Kings who are righteous worship with great sacrifices. All gifts are given in sacrifices, O delight of kings.
At the beginning of sacrifices, they give food, clothing, betel, gold, land, and cows.
By excellent sacrifices, the best of men attain the Vaishnava realm. By giving, they attain satisfaction; the rulers of the earth are content.
Ascetics and great souls always worship in this way. Having sought alms, they return to their own place.
For the sake of alms, they distribute portions, O king. To the Brahmin, a share; to the cow, food, O wise one.
To those who are close by, the ascetics give one portion. By giving that food, people enjoy its fruit.
Free from hunger and thirst, they indeed go to Vishnu's realm. Therefore, O king, you too should give wealth acquired justly.
From charity, one attains knowledge; from knowledge, one will attain perfection. Whoever hears this most excellent, auspicious account among mortals—
He attains success in all endeavors; all his sins are dissolved. Freed from all sins, he goes to the world of Vishnu.
Thus ends the ninety-fifth chapter in the story of Cyavana at the holy place of the Guru, in the Vena narrative of the Bhumi Khanda of the glorious Padma Purana.
Subahu said: By what kinds of actions do people go to hell after death? And by what kinds of actions do they go to heaven after death? You should tell me this.
Jaimini said: Those twice-born who, abandoning righteousness and virtue, are deluded by greed and infatuation and live by wicked deeds—indeed, they go to hell.
Atheists, those who transgress boundaries, those intent on sensual pleasures, hypocrites, and the ungrateful—these indeed go to hell.
Those who, having promised wealth to Brahmins, do not give it, and those who steal Brahmin property—such people go to hell.
Men who are slanderers, arrogant, liars, and those who speak irrelevant or incoherent words—these indeed go to hell.
Those who steal others’ property, who falsely accuse others, and those who consort with other men’s wives—these indeed go to hell.
Those men who are always engaged in harming the lives of living beings, and those who delight in slandering others—these indeed go to hell.
O scorcher of foes, men who destroy good wells, ponds, drinking places, and lakes—these people go to hell.
