विवाहः क्रियतामस्या इत्यूचुस्ते द्विजोत्तमाः । दिवोदासस्तु धर्मात्मा द्विजवाक्यप्रणोदितः
Let the marriage be performed for her—so spoke the foremost Brahmins; and Divodāsa, righteous in nature, was prompted by their words.
विवाहार्थं महाराज उद्यमं कृतवान्नृप । पुनर्दत्ता तु दानेन दिव्यादेवी द्विजोत्तम
For the purpose of marriage, O great King, the ruler made preparations; and again, by giving her as a gift, the divine lady was bestowed by the foremost Brahmin.
रूपसेनाय पुण्याय तस्मै राज्ञे महात्मने । मृत्युधर्मं गतो राजा विवाहे तु महीपतिः
To Rūpasena, the virtuous and noble king, she was given; but the king, having reached the law of death, died during the marriage.
यदा यदा महाभाग दिव्यादेव्याश्च भूपतिः । भर्ता च म्रियते काले प्राप्ते लग्नस्य सर्वदा
Whenever, O most fortunate one, the husband of Divyādevī, the king, died at the time of the marriage, each and every time.
एकविंशतिभर्तारः काले काले मृताः पितः । ततो राजा महादुःखी संजातः ख्यातविक्रमः
Twenty-one husbands died, one after another, O father; then the king, renowned for his valor, became greatly distressed.
समालोच्य समाहूय समामंत्र्य स मंत्रिभिः । स्वयंवरे महाबुद्धिं चकार पृथिवीपतिः
Having deliberated, summoned, and consulted with his ministers, the wise ruler organized a svayaṃvara.
प्लक्षद्वीपस्य राजानः समाहूता महात्मना । स्वयंवरार्थमाहूतास्तथा ते धर्मतत्पराः
The kings of Plakṣadvīpa were summoned by the great-souled one; they were invited for the svayaṃvara, and were devoted to righteousness.
तस्यास्तु रूपसंमुग्धा राजानो मृत्युनोदिताः । संग्रामं चक्रिरे मूढास्ते मृताः समरांगणे
Captivated by her beauty, the kings, driven by death, fought among themselves, foolishly, and were slain on the battlefield.
एवं तात क्षयो जातः क्षत्रियाणां महात्मनाम् । दिव्यादेवी सुदुःखार्ता गता सा वनकंदरम्
Thus, O father, destruction befell the noble Kṣatriyas; Divyādevī, overwhelmed by great sorrow, went to the forest cave.
रुरोद करुणं बाला दिव्यादेवी मनस्विनी । एवं तात मया दृष्टमपूर्वं तत्र वै तदा
The young and wise Divyādevī wept bitterly; thus, O father, I witnessed there something unprecedented at that time.
तन्मे सुविस्तरं तात तस्याः कथय कारणम्
Therefore, O father, tell me in detail the reason for her suffering.
इति श्रीपद्मपुराणे भूमिखंडे वेनोपाख्याने गुरुतीर्थे। च्यवनोपाख्याने पंचाशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the eighty-fifth chapter, called the story of Cyavana, in the Vena narrative at the holy Guru Tīrtha, in the Bhūmikhaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
कुंजल उवाच- व्रतभेदान्प्रवक्ष्यामि यैर्यैश्चाराधितो हरिः । जया च विजया चैव जयंती पापनाशिनी
Kunjala said: I will explain the varieties of vows by which Hari is worshipped; Jaya, Vijaya, and Jayantī, the destroyer of sin.
त्रिस्पृशा वंजुली चान्या तिलदग्धा तथापरा । अखंडाचारकन्या च मनोरथा सुपुत्रक
Trispṛśā, Vaṃjulī, and another called Tiladagdhā; Akhaṇḍācāra-kanyā and Manorathā, O dear son.
एकादश्यास्तु भेदाश्च संति पुत्र अनेकधा । अशून्यशयनं चान्यज्जन्माष्टमी महाव्रतम्
There are many kinds of Ekādaśī vows, O son; Aśūnyaśayana, Janmāṣṭamī, and the great vow.
एतैर्व्रतैर्महापुण्यैः पापं दूरं प्रयाति च । प्राणिनां नात्र संदेहः सत्यं सत्यं वदाम्यहम्
By these great and holy vows, sin is driven far away; for living beings, there is no doubt about this—I speak the truth, the truth.
कुंजल उवाच- स्तोत्रं तस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि पापराशिविनाशनम् । सुपुत्रशतनामाख्यं नराणां गतिदायकम्
Kuñjala said: I will declare his hymn, which destroys heaps of sin; it is called 'Hundred Names of the Good Son,' and grants liberation to men.
तस्य देवस्य कृष्णस्य शतनामाख्यमुत्तमम् । संप्रत्येव प्रवक्ष्यामि तच्छृणुष्व सुतोत्तम
This supreme 'Hundred Names' of the god Krishna I will now recite; listen to it, O best of sons.
विष्णोर्नामशतस्यापि ऋषिं छंदो वदाम्यहम् । देवं चैव महाभाग सर्वपापविशोधनम्
I will state the seer, meter, and deity of the Hundred Names of Vishnu, O illustrious one, which purifies all sins.
विष्णोर्नामशतस्यापि ऋषिर्ब्रह्मा प्रकीर्तितः । ॐकारो देवता प्रोक्तश्छंदोनुष्टुप्तथैव च
For the Hundred Names of Vishnu, Brahma is declared the seer; Om is said to be the deity, and the meter is Anushtubh.
सर्वकामिकसंसिद्ध्यै मोक्षे च विनियोगकः । अस्य विष्णोः शतनामस्तोत्रस्य । ब्रह्मा ऋषिः विष्णुर्देवता अनुष्टुप्छंदः । सर्वकामसमृद्ध्यर्थं सर्वपापक्षयार्थे विनियोगः
For the fulfillment of all desires and for liberation, this Hundred Names hymn of Vishnu is applied: Brahma is the seer, Vishnu the deity, Anushtubh the meter, and it is used for the attainment of all desires and destruction of all sins.
नमाम्यहं हृषीकेशं केशवं मधुसूदनम् । सूदनं सर्वदैत्यानां नारायणमनामयम्
I bow to Hṛṣīkeśa, Keśava, Madhusūdana, the destroyer of all demons, and to Nārāyaṇa, who is free from affliction.
जयंतं विजयं कृष्णमनंतं वामनं ततः । विष्णुं विश्वेश्वरं पुण्यं विश्वाधारं सुरार्चितम्
To the victorious, to Krishna, to the infinite, to Vāmana; to Viṣṇu, Lord of the Universe, the holy one, the support of the world, worshipped by the gods.
अनघं त्वघहंतारं नरसिंहं श्रियः प्रियम् । श्रीपतिं श्रीधरं श्रीदं श्रीनिवासं महोदयम्
To the sinless, the destroyer of evil, Narasiṃha, beloved of Śrī; to the Lord of Śrī, bearer of Śrī, giver of Śrī, abode of Śrī, of great glory.
श्रीरामं माधवं मोक्षं क्षमारूपं जनार्दनम् । सर्वज्ञं सर्ववेत्तारं सर्वदं सर्वनायकम्
To Śrī Rāma, Mādhava, the liberator, embodiment of forgiveness, Janārdana; the all-knowing, knower of all, giver of all, leader of all.
हरिं मुरारिं गोविंदं पद्मनाभं प्रजापतिम् । आनंदं ज्ञानसंपन्नं ज्ञानदं ज्ञाननायकम्
To Hari, Mura's enemy, Govinda, Padmanābha, Lord of creatures; to the blissful, endowed with knowledge, giver of knowledge, leader in knowledge.
अच्युतं सबलं चंद्रं चक्रपाणिं परावरम् । युगाधारं जगद्योनिं ब्रह्मरूपं महेश्वरम्
To Acyuta, strong, radiant as the moon, wielder of the discus, transcending all; the support of ages, source of the world, form of Brahma, the great Lord.
मुकुंदं तं सुवैकुंठमेकरूपं जगत्पतिम् । वासुदेवं महात्मानं ब्रह्मण्यं ब्राह्मणप्रियम्
To Mukunda, the beautiful Vaikuṇṭha, the sole form, Lord of the world; to Vāsudeva, the great soul, devoted to Brahma, beloved of the Brahmins.
गोप्रियं गोहितं यज्ञंयज्ञांगं यज्ञवर्द्धनम् । यज्ञस्यापि सुभोक्तारं वेदवेदांगपारगम्
Beloved of cows, benefactor of cows, sacrifice, limb of sacrifice, increaser of sacrifice; the excellent enjoyer of sacrifice, master of the Vedas and their branches.
वेदज्ञं वेदरूपं तं विद्यावासं सुरेश्वरम् । अव्यक्तं तं महाहंसं शंखपाणिं पुरातनम्
Knower of the Vedas, embodiment of the Vedas, abode of knowledge, Lord of the gods; the unmanifest, the great swan, bearer of the conch, ancient one.
