Giving cows, land, and food—such gifts, especially at Brahmavalli, yield merit equal to those donations.
Here, Sanaka and others, after bathing according to prescribed rites and meditating on the supreme Brahman, attain the realm of Vishnu.
At Pushkara, on the Ganga, and in the field of Amarakaṇṭaka—O goddess—whatever fruit a person obtains by going there,
That fruit is also attained especially at Brahmavalli; and those who give gifts during lunar or solar eclipses,
They attain that same fruit at Brahmavalli, O Queen of the gods; they take on divine forms, bearing conch, discus, and mace.
They too go to heaven, O Queen of the gods, after bathing, wearing a garland of tulasi, and remembering Narayana; they reach the divine, blissful, and eternal abode of Vaikuntha.
Thus is the greatness of the Brahmavalli pilgrimage site. Then one should go to Vrishatirtha, renowned at Khandatirtha; there, after bathing, cows formerly residing in Goloka attain heaven.
By the righteousness of Khandatirtha, those cows, mothers of the world, who had fallen from their realm due to a curse, are restored; thus it is called Khandatirtha.
Parvati said: Whose curse befell the world-mothers, the cows, in ancient times? How did they fall from their realm, and how were they protected by righteousness?
Mahadeva said: Once, while playing in Goloka with their mothers, a bull released dung and urine, which fell upon the head of Hara.
Then Hara, because of that offense, pronounced a curse upon them: 'You will lose awareness and depart from your own realm, going to earth.'
The cows, cursed by the Blessed One, after appeasing Hara, petitioned the god: 'May we again attain our realm.'
When, at the Brahmavati pilgrimage near Brahmavalli, you bathe in the lake called Khanda, you will surely attain heaven.
Then, after bathing in that lake with the lord of the cowherds, the cows, purified, went to heaven, near Mahadeva.
A man who bathes at the cow-pond and performs offerings to the ancestors there attains the world of cows, free from burning and destruction.
Having stayed there without food and offering a ball of cow-dung, that man prospers happily for as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
The certain fruit obtained by giving away ten million cows is also attained at the Khaṇḍa Tīrtha—of this there is no doubt.
Whoever drinks the sacred water mixed with bull's urine at the Khaṇḍa Tīrtha is instantly purified—there is no doubt.
There has never been, nor will there be, a holy place greater than Khaṇḍa Tīrtha; those men who go there, O best of gods, are blessed with merit.
Having gone there, O best of gods, one should worship the cows and then, after worshipping the bull, bathe with focused mind.
There is no doubt that by such worship one dwells long in the world of cows; and those who especially give a golden cow there—
Those men enjoy happiness for as long as the fourteen Indras reign; and whoever gives ten cows to a twice-born there—
At the Khaṇḍa Tīrtha, O best of gods, that is known as an act of endless fruit; and there, the wise should plant a pippala tree.
By doing so, O goddess of the gods, one attains the world of the ancestors; and those who plant five divine amalaki trees—
After enjoying happiness in this world, they go to the world of Hari.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the section of fifty-five thousand verses, in the Uttarakhaṇḍa, in the dialogue between Umā and Maheśvara, this is the one hundred and forty-fourth chapter named 'Khaṇḍa Tīrtha.'
Mahādeva said: Thereafter, one should go to Jambū Tīrtha for bathing, which destroys sins; in the Kali age, for men, it stands like a stairway to heaven.
There, on the excellent mountain Daśāṅga, Jāmbavat once established the lord of bears, a liṅga worshipped by hosts of gods.
When Rāma once slew the demon Rāvaṇa, at that time Jāmbavat proclaimed with drumbeats in all directions.
It was declared, 'Rāma has conquered, Rāvaṇa is slain in battle, Sītā is recovered!' and they bathed in that excellent, auspicious tīrtha.
