Otherwise, what you have asked, O radiant one, cannot be accomplished; what you have spoken is indeed impossible, though mixed with virtue.
From the world of mortals, with this very body, no human has been heard or seen to have gone to heaven, even if greatly virtuous.
Therefore, O beautiful one, what you have spoken to me is impossible; I shall do something else dear to you, tell me that, O beloved.
The goddess said— With other humans, O king, it would not be possible, there is no doubt; but with you, O great king, it is possible—I speak the truth, the truth.
By austerity, fame, royal power, charity, and sacrifices, O ruler, there is no other man like you in the world of mortals.
Royal strength, noble energy, and all brilliance are established in you; therefore, O son of Nahusha, you must do this for my sake.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purana, in the section of the earth, in the story of Vena, in the description of the holy place of parents, in the tale of Yayāti, the seventy-ninth chapter ends.
Pippala said— When the king married the wish-maiden, O best of twice-born, what did those two former wives, the supremely virtuous ones, do then?
Devayani, the blessed one, and Sharmishtha, daughter of Vrishaparvan—tell me all their stories before me.
Sukarma said— When the wish-maiden was brought to his house by the king, Devayani, wise in mind, became exceedingly jealous.
For that reason, in anger and with a disturbed mind, he cursed his two sons; and summoning Sharmishtha, the illustrious lady raised her voice.
In beauty, brilliance, generosity, and in truthfulness and virtuous vows, Sharmishtha and Devayani competed with her.
She then understood the wicked intent, born of desire, in both of them; and at that very moment, she told the king everything.
Then the enraged great king summoned Yadu and said: 'Let Sharmishtha be put to death, and likewise the daughter of Shukra.'
'Do what is pleasing to me, my son, if you truly consider it for the best.' Hearing his father's words, Yadu then replied:
He answered that king, his father, with respect: 'Father, I will not kill, for my mother and the other are without fault.'
'The killing of a mother is declared a great sin by the learned in the Vedas; therefore, O great king, I will not kill either of them.'
'Even if a mother is tainted with a thousand faults, O great king, so too a sister or a daughter—'
'—they should never be killed by sons or by brothers. Knowing this, O great king, I will not kill my mother.'
Hearing Yadu's words, the king became angry and later, Yayati, lord of the earth, cursed his son.
'Because you, though sinful, have today disobeyed my command, may you, tainted by my curse, partake of your mother's portion.'
Having thus spoken to his son Yadu, King Yayati, after cursing his son, the illustrious king—
—enjoyed happiness together with her, devoted to meditation on Vishnu; and Ashrubindumati, fair-eyed, was with him.
The beautiful-limbed one enjoyed blessed pleasures, pleasing to the mind; thus passed the time for the great-souled Yayati.
All the immortals became undecaying, and so too the other beings; all the worlds, O greatly fortunate one, were devoted to meditation on Vishnu.
Through austerity, truthfulness, and meditation on Vishnu, O Pippala, all the worlds, O greatly fortunate one, were happy, devoted to serving the virtuous.
Thus ends the eightieth chapter, the story of Yayati, in the account of Vena, in the description of the holy place for mother and father, in the Bhumi Khanda of the glorious Padma Purana.
Sukarma said: 'Just as Indra, that great and wise one, was always fearful of the great-souled Yayati, having seen his many acts of valor, generosity, and merit—'
He sent Menakā, the celestial nymph, as a messenger; 'Go, O blessed and noble one, convey my command.'
'O maiden of desire, go from here and deliver the words of the king of the gods; by any means, bring the king here.'
