Seeing her, that wide-eyed woman radiant with beauty and splendor, all the gods, hosts of sages, demons, gandharvas, and kinnaras—
In this world, there is no other woman, moving or unmoving, like her; formerly, an old actor merely animates the king’s body.
Then, great desire was stirred up and became manifest, just as fire arises with rays when it touches ghee.
Upon seeing her in that way, desire became evident in his body; his mind seized by passion, seeing her lovely eyes.
Never have I seen a maiden of such form, one who bewilders the whole world; the king, his mind absorbed in desire, pondered for a moment.
Even in her absence, the king became infatuated with her, burning with the fire of desire, afflicted by the fever of passion.
How might this woman become mine, how might this feeling arise—when that young, lotus-faced, lotus-eyed girl embraces me?
If I attain her, then life will be fulfilled; so thinking, the righteous king Yayati, lord of the earth—
Addressed her, of lovely form: 'Who are you, and whose, O auspicious one? The woman I saw before, I see again now.'
That righteous one questioned her: 'Who is this woman at your side? Tell me everything, O blessed one, for I am the son of Nahusha.'
'I am born of the Soma lineage, lord of the seven continents, O auspicious one; my name is Yayati, famed in the three worlds, O goddess.'
'My heart longs for union with you; grant me union, O gentle one, do what is most pleasing to me.'
'Whatever you desire, O blessed one, I will give—there is no doubt; conquered by irresistible desire, I am overcome, O beautiful one.'
'Therefore, protect me, so wretched, who has sought your refuge; my kingdom, the whole earth, even my own body—'
'For union with you, I will give you this entire threefold world.' Hearing the king’s words, that lotus-faced woman—
Spoke to her friend Vishala: 'Tell the king who has come your name, place of origin, father, and mother, O blessed one.'
'Also, convey my single-minded intention before him; knowing her wish, Vishala then addressed the king—'
She spoke with sweet words: 'Hear, O delight of kings.' Vishala said: 'This desire was formerly burned by the god of gods, Shambhu—'
Deprived of her husband, Rati wept aloud in sorrow, O king; in that very lake, Rati then remained.
Hearing her plaintive and melodious lament, filled with compassion, the gods were deeply moved to pity.
Then, O king of kings, they approached Śaṅkara and spoke these words: 'O great god, restore Manobhava to life once more.'
'How pitiable is this noble lady, bereft of her husband! Though united with desire, out of affection for us, please grant her this boon.'
Hearing these words, he replied, 'I shall restore Manobhava to life. Though deprived of his body, the five-arrowed Manobhava shall live.'
He will again become the companion of Mādhava, without doubt; he will exist in a divine body, and not otherwise.
By the grace of Mahādeva, Mīnaketu was revived; thus, with blessings, the goddess rejoiced in Kāma, O best of men.
'Go, Kāma, and act together with your beloved always,' said the illustrious lord, the creator and destroyer of all.
Once more Kāma returned to the lake where sorrowful Rati dwelled; this is the lake of Kāma, O king, where Rati is well established.
When Manmatha was burned, O noble one, Rati, overwhelmed by grief, from her anger gave rise to a fierce fire.
Even she was greatly scorched by that fire, and Rati, overcome by delusion, shed tears, bereft of her husband, O best of men.
From her eyes fell drops of tears; from them arose great sorrow, the destroyer of all happiness.
