गदैर्हीना नराः सर्वे ज्ञानध्यानपरायणाः । यज्ञदानपराः सर्वे दयाभावाश्च मानवाः
All men who are free from disease, devoted to knowledge and meditation, all who are dedicated to sacrifice and charity, and all humans who lack compassion—
उपकाररताः पुण्या धन्यास्ते कीर्तिभाजनाः । सर्वे धर्मपरा विप्र विष्णुध्यानपरायणाः
Those who delight in helping others, who are virtuous and blessed, who are the recipients of fame, all are devoted to righteousness, O Brahmin, and intent on meditating upon Vishnu.
राज्ञा तेनोपदिष्टास्ते संजाता वैष्णवा भुवि । विष्णुरुवाच- श्रूयतां नृपशार्दूल चरित्रं तस्य भूपतेः
Instructed by that king, they became Vaishnavas on earth. Vishnu said: Hear, O tiger among kings, the story of that sovereign.
सर्वधर्मपरो नित्यं विष्णुभक्तश्च नाहुषिः । अब्दानां तत्र लक्षं हि तस्याप्येवं गतं भुवि
Always devoted to all dharmas and a devotee of Vishnu was Nahusha's descendant; there, a hundred thousand years passed for him on earth in this way.
नूतनो दृश्यते कायः पंचविंशाब्दिको यथा । पंचविंशाब्दिको भाति रूपेण वयसा तदा
A new body is seen, as if twenty-five years old; he shines with the form and age of one who is twenty-five.
प्रबलः प्रौढिसंपन्नः प्रसादात्तस्य चक्रिणः । मानुषा भुवमास्थाय यमं नैव प्रयांति ते
Strong and endowed with maturity, by the grace of the wielder of the discus, those humans, having taken up life on earth, do not go to Yama.
रागद्वेषविनिर्मुक्ताः क्लेशपाशविवर्जिताः । सुखिनो दानपुण्यैश्च सर्वधर्मपरायणाः
Freed from passion and hatred, released from the bonds of affliction, happy through the merit of giving, and devoted to all dharmas.
विस्तारं तेजनाः सर्वे संतत्यापि गता नृप । यथा दूर्वावटाश्चैव विस्तारं यांति भूतले
All those people, O king, spread in lineage, just as blades of sacred grass expand upon the earth.
यथा ते मानवाः सर्वे पुत्रपौत्रैः प्रविस्तृताः । मृत्युदोषविहीनास्ते चिरं जीवंति वै जनाः
Just as those humans are extended through sons and grandsons, those people live long, free from the fault of death.
स्थिरकायाश्च सुखिनो जरारोगविवर्जिताः । पंचविंशाब्दिकाः सर्वे नरा दृश्यंति भूतले
With firm bodies, happy, free from old age and disease, all men are seen on earth as if twenty-five years old.
सत्याचारपराः सर्वे विष्णुध्यानपरायणाः । एवं सर्वे च मर्त्यास्ते प्रसादात्तस्य चक्रिणः
All are devoted to truth and right conduct, intent on meditating upon Vishnu; thus, all mortals are so by the grace of the wielder of the discus.
संजाता मानवाः सर्वे दानभोगपरायणाः । मृतो न श्रूयते लोके मर्त्यः कोपि नरोत्तम
All humans born are devoted to giving and enjoyment; O best of men, no mortal is heard to die in the world.
शोकं नैव प्रपश्यंति दोषं नैव प्रयांति ते । यद्रूपं स्वर्गलोकस्य तद्रूपं भूतलस्य च
They do not experience sorrow nor do they incur any fault; as is the nature of heaven, so is the nature of earth.
संजातं मानवश्रेष्ठ प्रसादात्तस्य चक्रिणः । विभ्रष्टा यमदूतास्ते विष्णुदूतैश्च ताडिताः
This has arisen, O best of men, by the grace of the wielder of the discus; the messengers of Yama have been cast out, struck by the messengers of Vishnu.
रुदमाना गताः सर्वे धर्मराजं परस्परम् । तत्सर्वं कथितं दूतैश्चेष्टितं भूपतेस्तु तैः
All of them, weeping, went together to Dharmaraja; all that was done by the king was reported by the messengers.
अमृत्युभूतलं जातं दानभोगेन भास्करे । नहुषस्यात्मजेनापि कृतं देवययातिना
The earth became free from death through giving and enjoyment under the sun, accomplished even by Devayayati, the son of Nahusha.
विष्णुभक्तेन पुण्येन स्वर्गरूपं प्रदर्शितम् । एवमाकर्णितं सर्वं धर्मराजेन वै तदा
By that virtuous devotee of Vishnu, the earth was made to resemble heaven; thus, all was heard by Dharmaraja at that time.
धर्मराजस्तदा तत्र दूतेभ्यः श्रुतविस्तरः । चिंतयामास सर्वार्थं श्रुत्वैवंनृपचेष्टितम्
Then Dharmaraja, having heard the full account from the messengers, reflected upon all matters after hearing of the king’s deeds.
इति श्रीपद्मपुराणे भूमिखंडे वेनोपाख्याने मातापितृतीर्थवर्णने ययातिचरित्रे पंचसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the Bhūmikhaṇḍa, within the tale of Vena, in the description of the holy places for mothers and fathers, and in the story of Yayāti, this is the seventy-fifth chapter.
सुकर्मोवाच- सौरिर्दूतैस्तथा सर्वैः सह स्वर्गं जगाम सः । द्रष्टुं तत्र सहस्राक्षं देववृंदैः समावृतम्
Sukarma said: Then Sauri, together with all the messengers, went to heaven to see the thousand-eyed one, surrounded by the hosts of gods.
धर्मराजं समायांतं ददर्श सुरराट्तदा । समुत्थाय त्वरायुक्तो दत्वा चार्घमनुत्तमम्
At that time, the king of the gods saw Dharmarāja approaching; rising quickly, he offered him excellent arghya.
पप्रच्छागमनं तस्य कथयस्व ममाग्रतः । समाकर्ण्य महद्वाक्यं देवराजस्य भाषितम्
He asked him, 'Tell me in my presence the reason for your coming here.' Having heard the great words spoken by the king of the gods—
धर्मराजोऽब्रवीत्सर्वं ययातेश्चरितं महत् । धर्मराज उवाच- श्रूयतां देवदेवेश यस्मादागमनं मम
Dharmarāja spoke all the great deeds of Yayāti. Dharmarāja said: 'Listen, Lord of gods and lords, to the reason for my coming.'
कथयाम्यहमत्रापि येनाहमागतस्तव । नहुषस्यात्मजेनापि वैष्णवेन महात्मना
'I will tell you here why I have come to you: because of the son of Nahuṣa, the great-souled Vaiṣṇava.'
वैष्णवाश्च कृता मर्त्या ये वसंति महीतले । वैकुंठस्य समं रूपं मर्त्यलोकस्य वै कृतम्
'Those mortals who are Vaiṣṇavas and dwell upon the earth have made the world of mortals equal in form to Vaikuṇṭha.'
अमरा मानवा जाता जरारोगविवर्जिताः । पापमेव न कुर्वंति असत्यं न वदंति ते
'The immortals have become human, free from old age and disease; they do not commit sin, nor do they speak untruth.'
कामक्रोधविहीनास्ते लोभमोहविवर्जिताः । दानशीला महात्मानः सर्वे धर्मपरायणाः
'They are free from desire and anger, devoid of greed and delusion; all are generous, great-souled, and devoted to dharma.'
सर्वधर्मैः समर्चंति नारायणमनामयम् । तेन वैष्णवधर्मेण मानवा जगतीतले
'With all forms of dharma, they worship Nārāyaṇa, the flawless one. By that Vaiṣṇava dharma, humans upon the earth—'
निरामया वीतशोकाः सर्वे च स्थिरयौवनाः । दूर्वा वटा यथा देव विस्तारं यांति भूतले
'Are free from illness and sorrow, all possessing lasting youth; like dūrvā grass and banyan trees, they spread across the earth.'
तथा ते विस्तरं प्राप्ताः पुत्रपौत्रैः प्रपौत्रकैः । तेषां पुत्रैः प्रपौत्रैश्च वंशाद्वंशांतरं गताः
'In this way, they have expanded with sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons; through their sons and great-grandsons, their lineages have continued.'
