By body, mind, or speech, for him the result is a lower rebirth; thus, in brief, the threefold kinds of sin have now been described—
Now the various destinies of men who perform sinful deeds are told; thus, O king, the fruit of dharma has been explained to you in detail.
I will tell you something else; speak to me, O best among men. The fruit of unrighteousness has been declared; I shall also speak of the fruit of righteousness.
Having said this, Mātali there addressed the king, who was affectionate to all; in that context of righteousness, it was thus narrated by the great-souled one.
Yayāti said: O charioteer, I have heard fully from you, O lord, the fruit of unrighteousness. Tell me also the fruit of righteousness; I am eager to hear.
Mātali said: Now, due to their sins, these four kinds of beings go to the realm of Yama; it is terrifying and causes fear, and all embodied beings go there helplessly.
There, beings must go—whether unborn in the womb, just born, children, youth, adults, men, women, those of neither sex, or the aged.
There, the good and bad fruits of embodied beings are examined by Citragupta and others, all impartial and all-seeing judges.
There are no living beings who do not go to Yama's abode; whatever action has been done must surely be experienced, as determined.
Those who have performed good deeds, whose minds are gentle and endowed with compassion, those men go to Yama's dwelling by a pleasant path.
He who gives wooden sandals to Brahmins goes comfortably to Yama's abode in a great celestial vehicle.
By giving an umbrella, embodied beings travel by a path shaded with clouds; those who give garments go wearing divine clothes.
By giving a palanquin, one travels comfortably in a celestial vehicle; by giving a comfortable seat, one goes happily to Yama's abode.
The maker of a garden, in cool and shaded places, goes happily; those who give flower gardens go by the celestial Pushpaka chariot.
The builder of a temple for the gods, or a hermitage for ascetics, or shelters for the destitute, travels joyfully in excellent houses.
One who worships the gods, fire, teachers, Brahmins, and one's mother and father—
Whatever is given with faith, even a little, to Brahmins who are poor and endowed with virtue, one attains all desired things in this world; the wise declare that giving in the Śrāddha rite is giving.
Even a gift as small as the tip of a hair, given with faith, should be understood; whatever fourfold vessel is given with faith, that is always mine.
Therefore, faith is always valued; the fruit of faith is obtained. Even giving shelters to the virtuous and the poor yields that fruit.
He attains the place of all desires, the ancestral realm, O king; even a coin given with faith to a Brahmin leads there.
O King, the day of the divine festival is renowned for increasing the glory of the gods; therefore, offerings should be made with faith, for their result is certain.
Thus ends the sixty-eighth chapter, called 'The Story of Yayāti,' in the narrative of Vena, describing the holy places of the ancestors, within the Bhūmikhaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
Mātali said: Now, the righteous duties spoken by Śiva, the supreme Śiva-dharma scriptures, are to be understood as manifold, distinguished by the paths of action and yoga.
Free from the faults of violence and the like, devoid of suffering and fatigue, pure, subtle, bringing great results, and beneficial to all beings—such are they.
Endowed with countless branches, all rooted solely in Śiva, adorned with the flowers of knowledge and meditation—these are the eternal Śiva-dharmas.
Because they uphold Śiva, and are upheld by Śiva’s words, these are called Śiva-dharmas, remembered as the means to cross the ocean of worldly existence.
Thus, forbearance, truthfulness, modesty, faith, control of the senses, charity, worship, austerity, and giving—these ten are the means to righteousness.
Whether practiced separately or together, when these Śiva-dharmas are performed and one attains unity with Śiva, a single destination is established.
Just as the earth is regarded as the common abode of all beings, so too is the city of Śiva remembered as equally accessible to all devotees of Śiva.
As here, all beings are said to enjoy pleasures of various kinds, so in the city of Śiva, pleasures arise according to the particular merits acquired.
