If the performer of śrāddha does not give, it is equal to cow-slaughter and other sins; therefore, O best of kings, both should be honored with faith.
Due to the influence of poverty, one may honor only one; even when transgression or irregularity occurs, O foremost of kings.
O King, likewise on the new moon day, at the time of decay, and during the fortnight of the other side, the rite of śrāddha should be performed by the three classes beginning with the Brāhmaṇa.
In a sacrifice, O great King, the officiating priests should arrange accordingly; likewise, Brāhmaṇas must always be appointed for the giving of śrāddha.
A Brāhmaṇa whose lineage is unknown should be appointed, even if not recognized; but if his ancestry, family, and three generations are known,
And his conduct, O King, then that Brāhmaṇa should be invited; if his family is not known, he should be judged by his behavior.
When giving śrāddha, even an ignorant but pure Brāhmaṇa may be appointed; an unknown Brāhmaṇa who is accomplished in the Vedas and their branches is also suitable.
Therefore, the giving of śrāddha should be performed, and thus a Brāhmaṇa must be invited; O best of kings, hospitality should be extended even to one not previously known.
If one acts otherwise, he is sinful and certainly goes to hell; therefore, a Brāhmaṇa must be appointed for giving and for śrāddha at sacred times.
First, the Brāhmaṇa should be examined, and then appointed for śrāddha and giving; the ancestors do not partake in the house where there is an absence of Brāhmaṇas.
After giving a curse, they depart from the śrāddha lacking Brāhmaṇas; even if he resembles Brahmā, such a one becomes greatly sinful.
O best of men, he who abandons ancestral conduct and behaves otherwise should be known as greatly sinful, excluded from all dharma.
Those who abandon Śiva's conduct, the Vaiṣṇava path that grants enjoyment, who revile Brāhmaṇas and dharma, should be recognized as promoters of sin.
Those who abandon Śiva's conduct and hate devotees of Śiva, those sinful ones who revile Hari and always act as enemies of Brahmā,
Those who revile proper conduct are the foremost doers of great sins; the highest worship, supreme knowledge, and the sacred Bhāgavata are likewise to be honored.
Those who worship the Vaiṣṇava, the Harivaṃśa, or the Matsya or Kūrma Purāṇa, or the Padma Purāṇa, I declare their welfare.
By that, the god Madhusūdana is directly worshipped; therefore, one should honor Vaiṣṇava knowledge, beloved of Viṣṇu.
O King, in the temple of the gods, the Vaiṣṇava book should always be present; when it is honored, the Brāhmaṇa is worshipped, and the Lord of Lotus is pleased.
Those who sing, write, give, hear, or recite the knowledge of Hari without honoring it, and without understanding it,
They play with it out of greed, with improper knowledge and discipline, and place it wherever they wish in unpurified places.
One who, though knowledgeable and capable, reveals the knowledge of Hari as it is, directly, yet acts negligently—
And one who, being impure, speaks or listens in an impure place—this, in summary, is all regarded as equal to the denigration of knowledge.
One who wishes to hear scripture without first honoring the teacher, who does not serve or obey, and who in spirit breaks commands—
Who does not welcome the teacher’s words, who responds back, and who neglects duties assigned by the teacher—
One who abandons the teacher when he is afflicted, powerless, has departed to another land, or is insulted by enemies—such a one is a wrongdoer.
I declare the sin of one who neglects a teacher reciting the Purāṇa: he shall dwell in Kumbhīpāka hell as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
He who, with evil mind, disregards a teacher reciting, for him too there is a terrible sin, causing long torment in hell.
One who shows contempt toward wife, children, or friends—this sin is to be known as great, equal to the denigration of the teacher.
A slayer of a brāhmaṇa, a thief of gold, a drinker of liquor, one who violates the teacher’s bed—these are great sinners, and one who associates with them is the fifth.
Out of anger, hatred, fear, or greed, especially toward a brāhmaṇa, one who strikes at the vital part—he is called a slayer of a brāhmaṇa.
