By the power of a hundred sacrifices, Nahusha once attained my position as Indra and became king of the gods in ancient times.
Through the power of Shachi's intellect, he fell from his position; such is this great king, equal in valor to his father.
He will surely attain the position of Indra—there is no doubt; by whatever means, bring this king to heaven.
Thus, frightened by the great fear of King Yayati, the lord of the gods began to ponder.
Then the king of the gods sent a messenger to bring Nahusha's son, along with a celestial chariot fulfilling all desires.
The charioteer named Matali, equipped with the chariot, went to the place where Nahusha's son resided.
Sent by the king of the gods to bring the wise one, Matali arrived in the assembly where Nahusha's son shone like Indra.
Likewise, Yayati, righteous in soul, shone in his own assembly; Matali addressed the great-souled king adorned with truth.
The charioteer of the king of the gods said: 'O king, listen to my words; I have been sent by the king of the gods to your presence now.'
'Whatever the king of the gods commands, do it gladly; you must go to the world of Indra, there is no other way.'
Having relinquished the kingdom to his son and performed the highest funeral rites, the illustrious king Ila, son of Nahusha, resides there.
Pururavas, mighty in valor; Viprachitti, great in mind; Shibi, Manu, and Ikshvaku, the lord of the earth, all dwell there.
Sagaran, wise; Nahusha, your father; Ritaviryya, grateful; and Shantanu, great in mind, are there as well.
Bharata, Yuvanashva, and Kartavirya, O lord of men, having performed many sacrifices, rejoice in heaven among the kings.
Other kings, devoted to sacrificial acts, also rejoice in heaven with Indra, each by their own deeds.
You, again, are knowledgeable in all dharmas and established in them; O king, rejoice with Shakra in the world of heaven.
Yayati said: What deed have I done, for which you have approached me? Tell me everything about this, concerning Indra, king of the gods.
Matali said: O king, when you completed eighty thousand years, your acts of charity, merit, and other deeds were accomplished through sacrifices.
Ascend to heaven, great king, by your own actions, O ruler of the earth. Become a companion of the king of the gods and go to the abode of the gods.
Abandon your fivefold body on earth, O wise one. Assuming a divine form, enjoy pleasures according to your desires.
Just as you performed sacrifices, charity, and austerity on earth, O lord of men, so too do heavenly enjoyments await you in accordance.
Yayati said: With which body does one experience the fruits of good and bad deeds on earth, Matali? How, after abandoning it, does one go to the world that was earned?
Matali said: Wherever this fivefold body is acquired, O king, there itself it is abandoned, and with a divine body alone, one goes there.
All other humans, who are the agents of merit and sin, also abandon the body and indeed go either below or above.
Yayati said: With the fivefold body, men produce good and bad deeds, and then, having done so, they go either below or above, O Matali.
What is the distinction, O knower of dharma, if one abandons the body on earth? By the force of merit or sin, the fall of the body occurs.
An example is seen, O Suta, directly in the world of mortals; I see no special superiority of merit or sin.
With which body does a man accumulate acts of truth, dharma, and so on in this mortal world? Why should he abandon that body, O wise one?
The self and the body—these two, though both appear as friends, yet, abandoning the body as a friend, the self surely departs.
Matali said: What you have said is true, O king; after abandoning the body, one departs. There is no connection between them, between the body and the self.
