Standing on the mountain peak, taking shelter in the shade of an ashoka tree, the wicked-hearted Vīraka sat upon a stone slab, holding a vīṇā staff.
He sang sweetly, a song enchanting to the whole world, accompanied by rhythm and measure, adorned with the seven notes.
The wicked-hearted one sang the song, captivated by her beauty; standing atop the mountain, the brāhmaṇa was filled with great joy.
Padmāvatī, the beautiful-faced, surrounded by her companions, heard the sweet song, endowed with rhythm and tempo.
"Who is this righteous soul singing a song that brings great delight? The song is accompanied by noble actions and filled with every sentiment."
Together with her friends, the king's daughter, driven by curiosity, went and took shelter in the pure, well-laid stone beneath the ashoka's shade.
She saw Gobhila, the vile demon, disguised in royal attire, wearing a garland of flowers and anointed with divine fragrance.
Padmāvatī, devoted to her husband, adorned with all ornaments, thought: 'When will the lord of Mathurā, devoted to righteousness, return?'
'My noble husband, having abandoned the kingdom, is far away; as long as she thought thus, that woman was summoned by that sinner.'
She was called out, 'Come, come, you are indeed my beloved!' Startled, anxious, and doubtful, she wondered if her husband had arrived.
Ashamed and distressed, she lowered her face; 'I am sinful, of bad conduct, and now, without fear, I have been changed.'
'Surely the great-souled one will become angry, there is no doubt; as long as she thought thus, that sinner again—'
—summoned her, 'Come, come, you are my beloved! O beautiful-faced one, without you, O goddess, I cannot sustain my life.'
'Indeed, O lovely one, I cannot live, nor do I desire life; I am captivated by your affection, I cannot bear to leave you.'
The brāhmaṇa said: Thus addressed, she went and saw him, her face filled with shame; then the demon embraced the virtuous Padmāvatī.
Brought aside in private, she was enjoyed at his will by the demon Gobhila, that daughter of Satyaketu.
Sukala said: The beautiful-faced one did not recognize the sign at his groin; taking her own garment, she became suspicious and distressed.
With anger, she spoke these words to Gobhila, the vile demon: 'Who are you, of sinful conduct, pitiless, with the form of a demon?'
Desiring to utter a curse, her eyes distressed with sorrow, trembling and weighed down by the burden of grief, she prepared herself, O King.
By coming to me under the guise of my beloved, you, with evil intent, have destroyed my foremost dharma—my supreme fidelity to my husband.
Having wept aloud with a clear voice, you have ruined my very birth; behold my power here and now—I shall pronounce upon you a most terrible curse.
Thus, as she spoke, intent on cursing him, Gobhila—
Sukala said: Hearing her words, Gobhila spoke: 'You wish to curse me—tell me, for what reason?'
By what fault am I tainted, that you are ready to curse me? I am Gobhila, a Daitya by name, a servant of Paulastya, O auspicious one.
I live by the conduct of Daityas; I know supreme knowledge, I am versed in the meaning of the Vedas and scriptures, and skilled in the arts as well.
Thus I know everything—hear from me the conduct of Daityas: I seize the wealth and wives of others by force, not otherwise.
We Daityas, having heard, now act according to Daitya ways; I speak the truth, the truth, in the spirit of knowledge.
Every day we observe the faults of Brahmins; we certainly cause the destruction of their austerity through obstacles—there is no doubt.
Finding a weakness, O lady, we destroy them without doubt; listen, O beautiful-faced one, about the divine sacrifice of Brahmins.
We destroy their sacrifices, and their righteous offerings—there is no doubt; abandoning noble Brahmins, we forsake Lord Nārāyaṇa.
