दयिता उग्रसेनस्य पतिव्रतपरायणा । आत्मबलेन तिष्ठंती दुष्प्राप्या पुरुषैरपि
She is the beloved of Ugrasena, devoted to her husband; standing firm by her own strength, she is difficult to attain even for men.
उग्रसेनो महामूर्खः प्रेषिता येन वै वरा । पितुर्गेहमियं बाला स तु भाग्येन वर्जितः
Ugrasena, greatly foolish, sent her, the noble one, to her father's house; but he is deprived of fortune.
अनया विना स जीवेच्च कथं कूटमतिः सदा । किं वा नपुंसको राजा एनां यो हि परित्यजेत्
How could that deceitful-minded one live without her? Or is the king impotent, who would abandon her?
तां दृष्ट्वा स तु कामात्मा संजातस्तत्क्षणादपि । इयं पतिव्रता बाला दुष्प्राप्या पुरुषैरपि
Seeing her, his mind filled with desire at that very moment; this maiden, devoted to her husband, is difficult to attain even for men.
कथं भोक्ष्याम्यहं गत्वा कामो मामति पीडयेत् । अभुक्त्वैनां यदा यास्ये तत्स्यान्मृत्युर्ममैव हि
How will I enjoy her, having gone there? Desire torments my mind; if I depart without possessing her, surely death will be mine.
अद्यैव हि न संदेहो यतः कामो महाबलः । इति चिंतापरो भूत्वा गोभिलो मनसैक्षत
Today, without doubt, for desire is very powerful; thus, absorbed in thought, Gobhila considered in his mind.
कृत्वा मायामयं रूपमुग्रसेनस्य भूपतेः । यादृशस्तूग्रसेनश्च सांगोपांगो महानृपः
He created a magical form of Ugrasena, the king; just as Ugrasena is, with all his limbs, the great ruler.
गोभिलस्तादृशो भूत्वा गत्या च स्वरभाषया । यथावस्त्रो यथावेशो वयसा च तथा पुनः
Gobhila became just like him, in gait and speech, in dress and appearance, and even in age.
दिव्यमाल्यांबरधरो दिव्यगंधानुलेपनः । सर्वाभरणशोभांगो यादृशो माथुरेश्वरः
Wearing divine garlands and garments, smeared with divine fragrance, adorned with all ornaments, just as the lord of Mathura.
भूत्वाथ तादृशो दैत्य उग्रसेनमयस्तदा । मायया परया युक्तो रूपलावण्यसंपदा
Then, the Daitya became just like Ugrasena, in every way; endowed with supreme illusion, with beauty and charm.
पर्वताग्रे अशोकस्यच्छायामाश्रित्य संस्थितः । शिलातलस्थो दुष्टात्मा वीणादंडेन वीरकः
Standing on the mountain peak, taking shelter in the shade of an ashoka tree, the wicked-hearted Vīraka sat upon a stone slab, holding a vīṇā staff.
सुस्वरं गायमानस्तु गीतं विश्वप्रमोहनम् । तालमानक्रियोपेतं सप्तस्वरविभूषितम्
He sang sweetly, a song enchanting to the whole world, accompanied by rhythm and measure, adorned with the seven notes.
गीतं गायति दुष्टात्मा तस्या रूपेण मोहितः । पर्वताग्रे स्थितो विप्र हर्षेण महतान्वितः
The wicked-hearted one sang the song, captivated by her beauty; standing atop the mountain, the brāhmaṇa was filled with great joy.
सखीमध्यगता सा तु पद्मावती वरानना । शुश्रुवे सुस्वरं गीतं तालमानलयान्वितम्
Padmāvatī, the beautiful-faced, surrounded by her companions, heard the sweet song, endowed with rhythm and tempo.
कोऽयं गायति धर्मात्मा महत्सौख्यप्रदायकम् । गीतं हि सत्क्रियोपेतं सर्वभावसमन्वितम्
"Who is this righteous soul singing a song that brings great delight? The song is accompanied by noble actions and filled with every sentiment."
सखीभिः सहिता गत्वा औत्सुक्येन नृपात्मजा । अशोकच्छायामाश्रित्य विमले सुशिलातले
Together with her friends, the king's daughter, driven by curiosity, went and took shelter in the pure, well-laid stone beneath the ashoka's shade.
ददर्श भूपवेषेण गोभिलं दानवाधमम् । पुष्पमालांबरधरं दिव्यगंधानुलेपनम्
She saw Gobhila, the vile demon, disguised in royal attire, wearing a garland of flowers and anointed with divine fragrance.
सर्वाभरणशोभांगं पद्मावती पतिव्रता । मथुरेशः समायातः कदा धर्मपरायणः
Padmāvatī, devoted to her husband, adorned with all ornaments, thought: 'When will the lord of Mathurā, devoted to righteousness, return?'
मम नाथो महात्मा वै राज्यं त्यक्त्वा प्रदूरतः । यावद्धि चिंतयेत्सा च तावत्पापेन तेन सा
'My noble husband, having abandoned the kingdom, is far away; as long as she thought thus, that woman was summoned by that sinner.'
समाहूता तुरीभूय एहि त्वं हि प्रिये मम । चकिताशंकितासाचकथंभर्त्तासमागतः
She was called out, 'Come, come, you are indeed my beloved!' Startled, anxious, and doubtful, she wondered if her husband had arrived.
लज्जिता दुःखिता जाता अधःकृत्वा ततो मुखम् । अहं पापा दुराचारा निःशंका परिवर्तिता
Ashamed and distressed, she lowered her face; 'I am sinful, of bad conduct, and now, without fear, I have been changed.'
कोपमेवं महाभागः करिष्यति न संशयः । यावद्धि चिंतयेत्सा च तावत्तेनापि पापिना
'Surely the great-souled one will become angry, there is no doubt; as long as she thought thus, that sinner again—'
समाहूता तुरीभूय एह्येहि त्वं मम प्रिये । त्वया विना कृतो देवि प्राणान्धर्तुं वरानने
—summoned her, 'Come, come, you are my beloved! O beautiful-faced one, without you, O goddess, I cannot sustain my life.'
न हि शक्नोम्यहं कांते जीवितं प्रियमेव च । तव स्नेहेन लुब्धोस्मि त्वां त्यक्त्वा नोत्सहे भृशम्
'Indeed, O lovely one, I cannot live, nor do I desire life; I am captivated by your affection, I cannot bear to leave you.'
ब्राह्मण्युवाच- एवमुक्ता गतापश्यत्सुमुखं लज्जयान्विता । समालिंग्य ततो दैत्यः सतीं पद्मावतीं तदा
The brāhmaṇa said: Thus addressed, she went and saw him, her face filled with shame; then the demon embraced the virtuous Padmāvatī.
एकांतं तु समानीता सुभुक्ता इच्छया ततः । दैत्येन गोभिलेनापि सत्यकेतोः सुता तदा
Brought aside in private, she was enjoyed at his will by the demon Gobhila, that daughter of Satyaketu.
सुकलोवाच- मुष्कस्थानेस्य संकेतं नाविंदत वरानना । स्ववस्त्रं सा परिगृह्य शंकिता दुःखिता ह्यभूत्
Sukala said: The beautiful-faced one did not recognize the sign at his groin; taking her own garment, she became suspicious and distressed.
सा सक्रोधा वचः प्राह गोभिलं दानवाधमम् । कस्त्वं पापसमाचारो निर्घृणो दानवाकृतिः
With anger, she spoke these words to Gobhila, the vile demon: 'Who are you, of sinful conduct, pitiless, with the form of a demon?'
शप्तुकामा समुद्युक्ता दुःखेनाकुलितेक्षणा । वेपमाना तदा राजन्दुःखभारेण पीडिता
Desiring to utter a curse, her eyes distressed with sorrow, trembling and weighed down by the burden of grief, she prepared herself, O King.
मम कांतच्छलेनैव त्वयागत्य दुरात्मवन् । नाशितं धर्ममेवाग्र्यं पातिव्रत्यमनुत्तमम्
By coming to me under the guise of my beloved, you, with evil intent, have destroyed my foremost dharma—my supreme fidelity to my husband.
