But this wicked Sudevā will destroy the lineage; I, abandoning her, will depart, O house-dweller.
The Brahmin woman said: 'Today you have understood, beloved, the faults in your daughter; through your delusion and affection, she is lost—listen now.'
One should nurture the son until he is five years old; always, beloved, instruct him with wisdom, then again raise him with affection.
With bathing, clothing, foods, meals, and drinks—without doubt, beloved, one should engage the son in virtues and in true knowledge.
For the sake of teaching virtue, the father should always be free from delusion; but in nurturing and raising, beloved, delusion arises.
He should not praise the son for virtues, but reproach him daily; he should always speak harshly and afflict him with words.
Just as one should always accomplish good learning, being intent on knowledge, even by feigned pride, one should abandon sin from afar.
Skill arises always in learning and virtues; and the mother should chastise her daughter, the mother-in-law should chastise her daughter-in-law.
The teacher should strike the student; only then is success attained, not otherwise. Likewise, a husband should strike his wife, and a king his minister.
A resolute man should strike a horse, and daily a mother should strike an elephant. Through discipline and instruction, success is achieved by striking and nurturing, O lord.
O master, this one has been ruined by you, there is never any doubt about it; together with the excellent Brahmin, by you, Śivaśarman.
She was made unrestrained in the house, and thus lost, O wise one. One should keep a daughter in the house only so long; listen to the words of the beloved.
One should not keep a strong daughter beyond eight years of age. If a daughter commits sin while staying in her father's house,
That sin is incurred by both parents. Therefore, a capable daughter should not be kept in her own home.
She who has been given in marriage should be maintained in her husband's house. There, she should serve her husband, endowed with virtues, with devotion.
The family's fame increases, and the father lives happily. If she commits sin there, the husband suffers that sin.
There, she always prospers with sons and grandsons. The father attains fame through the daughter's good qualities, O beloved.
Therefore, O beloved, one should not keep a daughter with her husband in the house. For this reason, listen: a story will be told.
When the great Dvāpara era of twenty-eight cycles arrived, O lord, concerning Ugrasena, the heroic eldest of the Yadus,
I will tell you his character; listen attentively, O twice-born.
The Brahmin said: In the delightful region of Mathura, in Mathura itself, there was a foremost king, renowned as Ugrasena, a Yadava, destroyer of enemy heroes.
He knew the essence of all dharma and wealth, was learned in the Vedas, well-versed in tradition, and strong. He was a giver, an enjoyer, a discerner of virtues; the king recognized noble qualities.
The intelligent king ruled, protecting his subjects with righteousness. Thus, the mighty Ugrasena, full of splendor, was powerful.
In the holy region of Vidarbha, Satyaketu, powerful and renowned, had a daughter of great fortune, Padmākṣī, lotus-faced.
Her name was Padmāvatī, devoted to truth and dharma. She was endowed with the virtues of women, like a second daughter of the ocean.
The Vidarbha princess shone, O king, with her own virtues and true qualities. Ugrasena of Mathura married the beautiful-eyed maiden.
With her, the illustrious and powerful one delighted in happiness; exceedingly pleased by her virtues, he became joyful in her company.
Through her affection and love, the lord of Mathura was enchanted; Padmavati, greatly blessed, became his beloved, dearer than life.
Without her, he did not eat; with her, he played; without her, he did not seek the highest happiness.
Thus, they became mutually incomparable in giving joy; O best of twice-born, both were full of affection, bestowing happiness and delight.
