चिंतयामास मेधावी किं कृत्वा सुकृतं भवेत् । क्षमां कृत्वा जगामाथ अन्यत्स्थानं द्विजोत्तमः
The wise one pondered, 'What should I do to bring about merit?' Exercising patience, the best of twice-born departed to another place.
तपश्चचार धर्मात्मा योगासनगतः सदा । कामं क्रोधं परित्यज्य मोहं लोभं तथैव च
That righteous-souled one practiced austerity, always established in yogic posture, having abandoned desire, anger, delusion, and greed.
सर्वेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य मनसा सममेव च । एवं स्थितस्तदा योगी पुलस्त्यो मुनिसत्तमः
Restraining all the senses and the mind equally, thus the yogi Pulastya, best among sages, remained established.
सुकलोवाच- गते तस्मिन्महाभागे पुलस्त्ये मुनिपुंगवे । कालादिष्टेन तेनापि गीतविद्याधरेण च
(Sukalā spoke:) When that illustrious Pulastya, foremost among sages, had departed, so too did the Gandharva skilled in song, as ordained by time.
चिंतितं सुचिरं कालं न दृष्टोयं भयान्मम । क्व गतस्तिष्ठते वापि कुरुते किं कथं च सः
He pondered for a long time, 'I have not seen him out of fear; where has he gone, where does he stay, what is he doing, and how?'
ज्ञात्वा पद्मात्मजसुतमेकांतवनशालिनम् । गतो वराहरूपेण तस्याश्रममनुत्तमम्
Knowing that the son of Padma was dwelling alone in the forest, he went, taking the form of a boar, to that unsurpassed hermitage.
आसनस्थं महात्मानं तेजोज्वालासमाविलम् । दृष्ट्वा चकार वै क्षोभं तस्य विप्रस्य भामिनि
O beautiful one, seeing the great-souled sage seated in meditation, radiant and shining with energy, that brahmin became agitated.
धर्षयेन्नियतं विप्रं तुंडाग्रेण कुचेष्टया । पशुं ज्ञात्वा महाराज क्षमते तस्य दुष्कृतम्
Intending to harass the restrained brahmin, he would prod him with his snout and behave mischievously; knowing him to be an animal, O great king, the sage forgave his misdeeds.
मूत्रयेत्पुरतः कृत्वा विष्ठां च कुरुते ततः । नृत्यते क्रीडते तत्र पतति प्रोच्चलेत्पुनः
He would urinate in front of him, then defecate there; he would dance, play, fall down, and then move about again.
पशुं ज्ञात्वा परित्यक्तो मुनिना तेन भूपते । एकदा तु तथायाते तेन रूपेण वै पुनः
Knowing him to be an animal, the sage abandoned him, O king; yet once, coming again in that same form—
अट्टाट्टहासेन पुनर्हास्यमेवं कृतं तदा । रोदनं च कृतं तत्र गीतं गायति सुस्वरम्
He then burst out in loud laughter, making jokes in that way; he also wept there, and sang songs in a melodious voice.
तथा तमागतं विप्रो गीतविद्याधरं नृप । चेष्टितं तस्य वै दृष्ट्वा घोणिरेष भवेन्नहि
Thus, O king, the brahmin saw him come in that manner, as a singer skilled in music; seeing his behavior, it was clear he was not a beast.
ज्ञात्वा तस्य तु वृत्तांतं मामेवं परिचालयेत् । पशुं ज्ञात्वा मया त्यक्तो दुष्ट एष सुनिर्घृणः
Knowing his story, he thought, 'He is acting thus toward me; knowing him to be an animal, I abandoned him—he is wicked and utterly cruel.'
एवं ज्ञात्वा महात्मानं गंधर्वाधममेव हि । चुकोप मुनिशार्दूलस्तं शशाप महामतिः
Realizing this, the tiger among sages, seeing him as the lowest of Gandharvas, became angry and, with great wisdom, cursed him.
यस्माच्छूकररूपेण मामेवं परिचालयेः । तस्माद्व्रज महापाप पापयोनिं तु शौकरीम्
Because you, in the form of a boar, have acted thus toward me, therefore, go, O great sinner, to a sinful birth as a boar.
शप्तस्तेनापि विप्रेण गतो देवं पुरंदरम् । तमुवाच महात्मानं कंपमानो वरानने
Cursed by that brahmin, he went to the lord of the gods, Purandara; trembling, he spoke to the great-souled one, O lovely-faced one.
शृणु वाक्यं सहस्राक्ष तव कार्यं कृतं मया । तप एव हि कुर्वन्सन्दारुणं मुनिपुंगवः
Hear my words, O thousand-eyed one: I have fulfilled your task; for while engaged in severe austerity, the foremost of sages was disturbed by me.
तस्मात्तपःप्रभावात्तु चालितः क्षोभितो मया । शप्तस्तेनास्मि विप्रेण देवरूपं प्रणाशितम्
Therefore, by the power of his austerity, I was shaken and disturbed; cursed by that brahmin, my divine form has been destroyed.
पशुयोनिं गतं शक्र मामेवं परिरक्षय । ज्ञात्वा तस्य स वृत्तांतं गीतविद्याधरस्य च
O Śakra, now that I have entered an animal womb, protect me; knowing his story and that of the singer skilled in music.
तेन सार्धंगतश्चेंद्रस्तं मुनिं पर्यभाषत । दीयतामनुग्रहो नाथ सिद्धिज्ञोसि द्विजोत्तम
Indra went together with him and addressed the sage: 'Grant your favor, O master, knower of accomplishments, best of twice-born.'
क्षम्यतां मुनिवर्यास्मिन्क्रियतां शापमोक्षणम् । इति संप्रार्थितो विप्रो महेंद्रेणाह हृष्टधीः
'Forgive him, O excellent sage, and release him from the curse.' Thus entreated by Mahendra, the brahmin, his mind gladdened, spoke.
पुलस्त्य उवाच- वचनात्तव देवेश क्षंतव्यं च मयापि हि । भविष्यति महाराज मनुपुत्रो महाबलः
Pulastya said: 'By your words, O lord of the gods, I too must forgive; there will be born a mighty son of Manu, O great king.'
इक्ष्वाकुर्नाम धर्मात्मा सर्वधर्मानुपालकः । तस्य हस्ताद्यदा मृत्युरस्यैव च भविष्यति
'His name will be Ikṣvāku, righteous and upholder of all dharmas; when death comes from his hand, then this one will be released.'
तदैष वै स्वकं देहं प्राप्स्यते नात्र संशयः । एतत्ते सर्ववृत्तांतं शूकरस्य निवेदितम्
'Then he will regain his own body—of this there is no doubt; thus I have told you the entire story of the boar.'
आत्मनश्च प्रवक्ष्यामि पत्या सार्धं शृणुष्व हि । मया च पातकं घोरं कृतं यत्पापया पुरा
I will tell you also about myself, together with my husband; listen, for I once committed a terrible sin through wickedness.
सप्तचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः सुकलोवाच- सुदेवा चारुसर्वांगी तामुवाचाथ सूकरीम् । पशुयोनिं गता त्वं हि कथं वदसि संस्कृतम्
Chapter Forty-Seven Sukala said: Then Sudeva, beautiful in every limb, spoke to that sow: 'You have taken birth in an animal womb—how is it that you speak Sanskrit?'
एवंविधं महाज्ञानं कस्माद्भूतं वदस्व मे । कथं जानासि वै भर्तुश्चरित्रमात्मनः शुभे
'How has such great knowledge arisen in you? Tell me. And how do you know the deeds of your husband and yourself, O auspicious one?'
शूकर्युवाच- पशोर्भावेन मोहेन मुष्टाहं वरवर्णिनि । निहता खड्गबाणैश्च पतिता रणमूर्धनि
The sow said: 'By the delusion of an animal's nature, O lovely one, I was seized and struck down by sword and arrow, falling on the battlefield.'
मूर्च्छयाभिपरिक्लिन्ना ज्ञानहीना वरानने । त्वयाभिषिक्ता येनाहं पुण्यहस्तेन सुंदरि
Overcome by faintness, deprived of knowledge, O beautiful-faced one, I was anointed by you with your virtuous hand, O lovely woman.
पुण्योदकेन शीतेन तव हस्तगतेन वै । अभिषिक्ते हि मे काये मोहो नष्टो विहाय माम्
With holy, cool water held in your hand, when my body was anointed, my delusion left me and abandoned me.
