धर्मनिष्ठा तपोनिष्ठा मातस्त्वं भव सर्वदा । मास्तु लोभः शरीरे ते आपन्नार्ति सदा हर
O mother, always be steadfast in righteousness and austerity; let there be no greed in your body, and may you always remove the suffering of those in distress.
इत्युक्त्वा तु प्रणम्याथ सतां कांचनमालिनीम् । जगाम राक्षसः स्वर्गं गंधर्वैर्बहुभिः स्तुतः
Having spoken thus, he bowed to the virtuous lady adorned with gold, and the demon departed to heaven, praised by many Gandharvas.
देवकन्यास्तदागत्य ववर्षुः पुष्पवृष्टिभिः । तस्याः कांचनमालिन्या मूर्ध्नि हर्षसमाकुलाः
Then the celestial maidens arrived and showered a rain of flowers, overwhelmed with joy, upon the head of that golden-garlanded one.
तामालिंग्य ततः प्रोचुः कन्यकास्तु प्रियं वचः । कृतं भद्रे त्वया चित्रं राक्षसस्य विमोक्षणम्
Embracing her, the maidens spoke affectionate words: 'O blessed one, you have performed a wondrous deed in liberating the demon.'
दुष्टस्यास्य भयात्कश्चिद्विशत्यस्मिन्न कानने । अधुना निर्भया ह्यत्र विचरामो यथासुखम्
'Because of fear of that wicked one, no one would enter this forest; now, we may roam here without fear, as we please.'
श्रुत्वा तद्वचनं राजंस्तासां कांचनमालिनी । हृष्टा तेनैव दानेन कृतकृत्या तदा सती
Hearing those words, O King, Kāñcanamālinī was gladdened by her own act of charity and felt fulfilled at that moment.
तं राक्षसं कांचनमालिनीवरा गन्धर्वकन्या परिमोच्य सत्वरम् । क्रीडंत्यमूभिः प्रययौ हरालयं प्रीत्या सपूर्णा च परोपकारया
Having swiftly released that demon, the best among the Gandharva maidens, Kāñcanamālinī, joyfully went to the abode of Hara, her heart full from her act of kindness.
संवादमेनं वरकन्यकेरितं भक्त्या परं यः शृणुयाच्च मानवः । न बाध्यते जातु सदा स राक्षसैर्धर्मे मतिस्तस्य भृशं हि जायते
Whoever, with devotion, hears this conversation spoken by the noble maiden, is never troubled by demons and his mind becomes firmly established in righteousness.
पार्वत्युवाच। द्वीपेऽस्मिन्यानि तीर्थानि तानि मे वद सुव्रत । द्वीपानां द्वीपराजोऽयं सर्वदा भुवि निर्मितः । संख्यया त्वं वद स्वामिन्कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि
Pārvatī said: On this island, what are the sacred places? Tell me, O virtuous one. This is the king of islands, always established on earth. Out of kindness to me, Master, tell me their number.
महादेव उवाच। सर्वगः सर्वभूतेषु द्रष्टव्यः सर्वतो भुवि । सप्तलोकेषु यत्किंचिद्दृश्यते सचराचरम्
Mahādeva said: He is all-pervading and should be seen in all beings, everywhere on earth; whatever is seen in the seven worlds, moving or unmoving.
तत्वं तेन विना देवि न दृष्टं न श्रुतं मया । अतो विष्णुर्महादेवः केशवः क्लेशनाशनः । तीर्थरूपेण वर्तेत द्वीपे ह्यस्मिन्सुरेश्वरि
Without that principle, O goddess, I have neither seen nor heard anything; therefore, Viṣṇu, the great god, Keśava, the remover of suffering, abides here in the form of sacred places, O queen of the gods.
तानि तीर्थानि वक्ष्यामि सांप्रतं नात्र संशयः । प्रथमं पुष्करं क्षेत्रं तीर्थानां प्रवरं शुभम् । वाराणसी द्वितीयं तु क्षेत्रं मुक्तिप्रदायकम्
Now I shall tell you of those sacred places; there is no doubt in this. First is Puṣkara, the most excellent and auspicious of the sacred fields; second is Vārāṇasī, the field that bestows liberation.
तृतीयं नैमिषं क्षेत्रमृषीणां पावनं स्मृतम् । प्रयागं वै चतुर्थं तु तीर्थानामुत्तमं स्मृतम्
The third is Naimiṣa, remembered as the purifier of sages; the fourth is Prayāga, regarded as the best of sacred places.
कार्मुकं पंचमं प्रोक्तं उत्पन्नं गंधमादने । एकादशं कान्यकुब्जं यत्र तिष्ठति वामनः
The fifth is Kārmuka, said to have arisen in Gandhamādana; the eleventh is Kānyakubja, where Vāmana resides.
सप्तमं विश्वकायं तु अवरे पर्वते शुभे । अष्टमं गौतमाख्यं च मंदरे निर्मितं पुरा
The seventh is Viśvakāya, on a beautiful mountain below; the eighth is called Gautama, established long ago on Mandara.
मदोत्कटं तु नवमं दशमं रथचैत्रकम् । एकादशं कान्यकुब्जं यत्र तिष्ठति वामनः
The ninth is Madotkaṭa, the tenth is Rathacaitraka; the eleventh is Kānyakubja, where Vāmana dwells.
द्वादशं मलयं चैव कुब्जाम्रकमतः परम् । विश्वेश्वरं गिरिकर्णं केदारं गतिदायकम्
The twelfth is Malaya, then Kubjāmraka; after that, Viśveśvara, Girikarṇa, and Kedāra, the giver of liberation.
बाह्यं हिमवतः पृष्ठे गोकर्णे गोपकं तथा । स्थानेश्वरं हिमाद्रौ च बिल्वके बिल्वपत्रिकम्
Bāhya on the back of the Himalaya, Gokarṇa, and also Gopaka; Sthāneśvara in the Himalaya, and Bilvaka with Bilvapatrika.
श्रीशैले माधवं तीर्थं भद्रं भद्रेश्वरे तथा । वाराहे विजयं प्रोक्तं वैष्णवं वैष्णवे गिरौ
Śrīśaila, the holy place of Mādhava, Bhadra at Bhadreśvara as well; at Vārāha, Vijaya is mentioned, and Vaiṣṇava on the Vaiṣṇava mountain.
रौद्रं तु रुद्रकोटे तु पैत्र्यं कालिजरे गिरौ । कंपिले कापिलं तीर्थं मुकुटे कर्कोटकं तथा
Raudra at Rudrakoṭi, Paitrya at Kālijara mountain; at Kaṃpila, the Kapila holy place, and at Mukuṭa, also Karkoṭaka.
शालग्रामोद्भवं तीर्थं गल्लिकायां सुरेश्वरि । नर्मदायां शिवाख्यं तु मायायां विश्वरूपकम्
The holy place born at Śālagrāma, at Gallikā, Sureśvarī; at Narmadā, the one called Śiva, and at Māyā, Viśvarūpaka.
उत्पलाक्षं सहस्राक्षं जातं वै रैवते गिरौ । गंगायां पितृतीर्थं च विष्णुपादोद्भवं तथा
Utpalākṣa and Sahasrākṣa arose on the Raivata mountain; at Gaṅgā, the Pitṛtīrtha, and also the one born from Viṣṇu's foot.
विपाशायां विपापा च पाटले पुंड्रवर्द्धनम् । नारायणं सुपार्श्वे तु त्रिकूटे विष्णुमंदिरम्
At Vipāśā, Vipāpā; at Pāṭala, Puṇḍravardhana; Nārāyaṇa at Supārśva, and the Viṣṇu temple at Trikūṭa.
विपुले विपुलं नाम कल्याणं मलयाचले । कौरवं कोटितीर्थे च सुगंधं गंधमादने
At Vipula, the one called Vipula; Kalyāṇa at Malayācala; Kaurava at Koṭitīrtha, Sugandha at Gandhamādana.
कुब्जाम्रके त्रिसंध्यं तु गंगांद्वारे हरिप्रियम् । शैलं विंध्यप्रदेशे तु बदर्यां सारस्वतं स्मृतम्
At Kubjāmraka, Trisaṃdhya; at Gaṅgādvāra, dear to Hari; at the Vindhya region, Śaila; at Badarī, Sārasvata is remembered.
कालिद्यां कालरूपं च सह्ये वै सायकं स्मृतम् । चांद्रं चंद्रप्रदेशे तु रमणं तीर्थनायकम्
At Kālidyā, Kālarūpa; at Sahya, Sāyaka is remembered; at Caṃdra, in the region of the moon, Ramaṇa, the chief of holy places.
यमुनायां मृगाख्यं तु करवीरे कुरूद्भवम् । विनायके पर्वते वै उमाख्यं तीर्थमेव च
At Yamunā, Mṛgākhya; at Karavīra, born of the Kurus; at Vināyaka mountain, the holy place called Umā.
आरोग्यं भास्करे देशे महाकाले महेश्वरम् । तीर्थं अभयदं नामामृताख्यं विंध्यकंधरे
Ārogya in the land of Bhāskara; Maheśvara at Mahākāla; the holy place named Abhayada, called Amṛta, on the Vindhya slope.
मंडपे विश्वरूपं च स्वाहाख्यं ईश्वरे पुरे । वैगलेयं प्रचंडायां चांडिकंमरकंटके
Viśvarūpa at Maṇḍapa; Svāhākhya in the city of Īśvara; Vaigaleya at Pracaṇḍā, Caṇḍika at Marakaṇṭaka.
सोमेश्वरं तथा तीर्थे प्रभासे पुष्करं तथा । देवमात्रं सरस्वत्यां पारावततटे स्थितम्
Someśvara at the holy place, and at Prabhāsa, Puṣkara; Devamātra on the Sarasvatī, situated on the bank of Pārāvata.
