क्वचित्तपंति मुनयः क्वचिद्गायंति किन्नराः । संतुष्टा ऋषिगंधर्वा वीणातालकराविलाः
In some places sages perform austerities, elsewhere Kinnaras sing; the satisfied Rishis and Gandharvas delight in the rhythms of the vina.
तालमानलये लीनाः स्वरैः सप्तभिरन्वितैः । मूर्च्छनारत्निसंयुक्तैर्व्यक्तं गीतं मनोहरम्
Absorbed in the measures and beats, with the seven notes and the jewels of musical modes, their clear and enchanting song resounds.
तस्मिन्वै पर्वतश्रेष्ठे चंदनच्छायसंश्रिताः । गंधर्वा गीततत्वज्ञा गीतं गायंति तत्पराः
On that best of mountains, sheltered by sandalwood shade, Gandharvas who know the essence of music sing with full devotion.
नृत्यंति योषितस्तत्र देवानां पर्वत्तोत्तमे । पापहा पुण्यदो दिव्यः सुश्रेयसां प्रदायकः
There, on the supreme mountain of the gods, celestial women dance; it destroys sin, bestows merit, is divine, and grants the highest good.
वेदध्वनिः समधुरः श्रूयते पर्वतोत्तमे । चंदनाशोकपुन्नागैः शालैस्तालैस्तमालकैः
On that highest mountain, the sound of the Vedas, supremely sweet, is heard, surrounded by sandalwood, Ashoka, Punnaga, Shala, Tala, and Tamala trees.
वटैस्तु मेघसंकाशै राजते पर्वतोत्तमः । संतानकैः कल्पवृक्षै रंभापादपसंकुलैः
The supreme mountain shines with banyan trees like clouds, with Santanaka and Kalpavriksha trees, and is crowded with Rambha trees.
नगेंद्रो भाति सर्वत्र नाकवृक्षैः सुपुष्पितैः । नानाधातुसमाकीर्णो नानारत्नचयो गिरिः
The lord of mountains shines everywhere with heavenly trees in full bloom, filled with various minerals and heaps of diverse jewels.
नानाकौतुकसंयुक्तो नानामंगलसंयुतः । वेदवृंदैः सुसंजुष्टो ह्यप्सरोगणसंकुलः
Endowed with many wonders and auspicious things, adorned with groups of Vedic chanters, and crowded with hosts of Apsaras.
ऋषिभिर्मुनिभिः सिद्धैर्गंधर्वैःपरिभातिसः । गजैश्चाचलसंकाशैः सिंहनादैर्विराजते
It shines forth with seers, sages, perfected beings, and Gandharvas in attendance, and with elephants, massive as mountains, resounding with lion-roars.
शरभैर्मत्तशार्दूलैर्मृगधूर्तैरलंकृतः । वापीकूपतडागैश्च संपूर्णैर्विमलोदकैः
It is adorned with sharabhas, intoxicated tigers, and clever deer, and with wells, pools, and tanks filled with pure water.
हंसकारंडवाकीर्णैः सर्वत्र परिशोभते । कनकोत्पलैश्च श्वेतैश्च रक्तोत्पलैर्विराजते
Everywhere it is brightened by flocks of swans and cranes, and it shines with golden lotuses, white lotuses, and red lotuses.
नदीस्रवणसंघातैर्विमलैश्चोदकैस्तथा । शालतालैश्च रूपैश्च सगजैः स्फाटिकैस्तथा
With streams and rivers flowing together, and with pure waters as well, with shala and palm trees, and with crystal-clear stones along with elephants.
विस्तीर्णैः कांचनैर्दिव्यैः सूर्यवह्निसमप्रभैः । शिलातलैश्च संपूर्णः शैलराजो विराजते
The king of mountains shines, covered with broad, golden, divine plateaus, radiant like the sun and fire, and filled with rocky surfaces.
विमानैर्देवतानां च प्रासादैः पर्वतोत्तमैः । हंसचंद्रप्रतीकाशैर्हेमदंडैरलंकृतः
It is adorned with the aerial palaces of the gods, with the finest mountain palaces, and with golden pillars resembling swans and the moon.
कलशैश्चामरैर्युक्तैः प्रासादैः परिशोभितः । नानागुणप्रमुदित देववृंदैश्च शोभितः
It is beautified by palaces equipped with finials and yak-tail fans, and shines with hosts of gods, joyful in their various virtues.
देववृंदैरनेकैश्च गंधर्वैश्चारणैस्तथा । सर्वत्र राजते पुण्यो मेरुर्गिरिवरोत्तमः
Everywhere the sacred, supreme mountain Meru shines, with many hosts of gods, Gandharvas, and also celestial beings.
तस्माद्गंगामहापुण्या पुण्यतोया महानदी । प्रसूता पुण्यतीर्थाढ्या हंसपद्मैः समाकुला
From there, the Ganga, supremely holy and filled with sacred water, the great river, arose, rich in holy fords and crowded with swans and lotuses.
मुनिभिः सेव्यमाना सा ऋषिसंघैर्महानदी । एवंगुणं गिरिश्रेष्ठं पुण्यकौतुकमंगलम्
That great river, served by sages and throngs of seers, is the most auspicious and wondrous, possessing all these virtues, the best of mountains.
अंगश्चात्रिसुतः पुण्यः प्रविवेश महामुनिः । गंगातीरे सुपुण्ये च एकांते चारुकंदरे
Then Aṅga, the virtuous son of Atri, the great sage, entered a most holy and beautiful cave on the sacred bank of the Ganga.
तत्रोपविश्य मेधावी कामक्रोधविवर्जितः । सर्वेंद्रियाणि संयम्य हृषीकेशं मनोगतम्
There, the wise one sat down, free from desire and anger, restraining all his senses, his mind fixed upon Hrishikesha.
ध्यायमानः स धर्मात्मा कृष्णं क्लेशापहं प्रभुम् । आसने शयने याने ध्याने च मधुसूदनम्
Meditating, that righteous soul contemplated Krishna, the remover of suffering, the Lord, whether sitting, lying, traveling, or in meditation, on Madhusudana.
नित्यं पश्यति युक्तात्मा योगयुक्तो जितेंद्रियः । चराचरेषु जीवेषु तेषु पश्यति केशवम्
Always, with a disciplined mind and controlled senses, united in yoga, he sees Keshava among all living beings, both moving and unmoving.
आर्द्रेषु चैव शुष्केषु सर्वेष्वन्येषु स द्विजः । एवं वर्षशतं जातं तप्यमानस्य तस्य च
In the wet and the dry, and in all other things, that twice-born one likewise saw him; thus, a hundred years passed as he performed austerities.
समालोक्य जगन्नाथश्चक्रपाणिर्द्विजोत्तमम् । बहुविघ्नान्सुघोरांश्च दर्शयत्येव नित्यशः
Beholding him, the Lord of the universe, wielder of the discus, constantly showed that best of twice-born many severe and terrible obstacles.
तेजसा तस्य देवस्य नृसिंहस्य महात्मनः । निरातंकः स धर्मात्मा दहत्यग्निरिवेंधनम्
By the power of that god, the great-souled Narasimha, that righteous one remained untroubled, burning them up like fire consumes fuel.
नियमैः संयमैश्चान्यैरुपवासैर्द्विजोत्तमः । क्षीयमाणस्तु संजातो दीप्यमानः स्वतेजसा
Through vows, restraints, and other disciplines, and by fasting, that best of twice-born, though wasting away, shone brightly with his own splendor.
सूर्यपावकसंकाशस्त्वंग एवं प्रदृश्यते । एवं तपःसु निरतं ध्यायमानं जनार्दनम्
Radiant as the sun and fire, Anga was thus seen; so, absorbed in austerities, he was meditating on Janardana.
आविर्भूयाब्रवीद्देवो वरं वरय मानद । तं च दृष्ट्वा हृषीकेशमंगः परम निर्वृतः
The deity appeared and spoke: 'Choose a boon, O giver of honor.' Seeing Hṛṣīkeśa, Anga was supremely delighted.
तुष्टाव प्रणतो भूत्वा वासुदेवं प्रसन्नधीः
With a pleased mind, he bowed and praised Vāsudeva.
अंग उवाच- त्वं गतिः सर्वभूतानां भूतभावन पावन । भूतात्मा सर्वभूतेश नमस्तुभ्यं गुणात्मने
Anga said: You are the refuge of all beings, creator and purifier of existence; you are the soul of beings, lord of all creatures. Salutations to you, embodiment of virtues.
