तेनैव वर्तयंत्युग्रा महाकाया महाबलाः । तदाहारास्तदाचारास्तद्वीर्यास्तत्पराक्रमाः
By that, the fierce, great-bodied, and powerful ones live; their food, conduct, strength, and prowess all arise from it.
अथातः संप्रवक्ष्यामि यथा दुग्धा वसुंधरा । असुरैर्दानवैः सर्वैः कल्पयित्वा द्विजोत्तमाः
Now, O best of Brahmins, I shall explain how the earth was milked by all the Asuras and Dānavas, after making arrangements.
पात्रमत्रान्नसदृशमायसं सर्वकामिकम् । क्षीरं मायामयं कृत्वा सर्वारातिविनाशनम्
Their vessel was an iron pot, resembling a food bowl and granting all desires; the milk was magical, capable of destroying all enemies.
तेषामभूत्स वै वत्सो विरोचनः प्रतापवान् । ऋत्विग्द्विमूर्द्धा दैत्यानां मधुर्दोग्धा महाबलः
For them, the powerful Virocana became the calf; the officiating priest, Madhur, of great strength, was the milker for the Daityas.
तया हि मायया दैत्याः प्रवर्त्तंते महाबलाः । महाप्रज्ञा महाकाया महातेजः पराक्रमाः
By that magic, the Daityas, great in strength, wisdom, size, brilliance, and valor, continue to exist.
तद्बलं पौरुषं तेषां तेन जीवंति दानवाः । तयैते माययाद्यापि सर्वमाया द्विजोत्तमाः
By that strength and manliness, the Dānavas live; even today, O best of Brahmins, all their magic arises from that very illusion.
प्रवर्तंते मितप्रज्ञास्ते तदेषामिदं बलम् । तथा तु दुग्धा यक्षैः सा सर्वाधारासु मेदिनी
Those of limited wisdom continue by that power; thus, the earth, the support of all, was also milked by the Yakṣas.
इति शुश्रुम विप्रेंद्राः पुराकल्पे महात्मभिः । अंतर्धानमयं क्षीरमयस्पात्रे सुविस्तरे
Thus have we heard, O foremost of Brahmins, from the great souls of olden times: the milk of concealment was drawn in a vast iron vessel.
वैश्रवणो महाप्राज्ञस्तदा वत्सः प्रकल्पितः । मणिधरस्य पिता पुण्यः प्राज्ञो बुद्धिमतां वरः
Vaiśravaṇa, the highly wise, was then made the calf; the virtuous father of Maṇidhara, best among the intelligent, was chosen.
दोग्धा रजतनाभस्तु तस्याश्चासीन्महामतिः । सर्वज्ञः सर्वधर्मज्ञो यक्षराजसुतो बली
The milker was the one with a silver navel, of great intellect, all-knowing, versed in all dharma, the powerful son of the Yakṣa king.
अष्टबाहुर्महातेजा द्विशीर्षः सुमहातपाः । यक्षावर्तंत तेनापि सर्वदैव द्विजोत्तमाः
He had eight arms, great brilliance, two heads, and immense austerity; by him, O best of Brahmins, the Yakṣas always continue.
पुनर्दुग्धा इयं पृथ्वी राक्षसैश्च महाबलैः । तथा चैषा पिशाचैश्च सातुरैर्दग्धवारिभिः
Again, this earth was milked by the mighty Rākṣasas, and likewise by Piśācas, with those who consume burnt offerings.
उत्प्लुतं नृकपालं तं शावपात्रमयः कृतम् । सुप्रजां भोक्तुकामास्ते तीव्रकोपपराक्रमाः
A human skull, leaping up, was made their vessel of flesh; desiring to consume noble offspring, they were fierce in anger and might.
दोग्धा रजतनाभस्तु तेषामासीन्महाबलः । सुमाली नाम वत्सश्च शोणितं क्षीरमेव च
For them, the milker was the one with a silver navel, of great strength; Sumālī was the calf, and their milk was blood.
रक्षांसि यातुधानाश्च पिशाचाश्च महाबलाः । यक्षास्तेन च जीवंति भूतसङ्घाश्च दारुणाः
The fierce rākṣasas, yātudhānas, piśācas of great power, yakṣas, and the dreadful hosts of spirits live by that.
गंधर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च पुनर्दुग्धा वसुंधरा । कृत्वा वत्सं सुविद्वांसं तैश्च चित्ररथं पुनः
Again, the earth was milked by the gandharvas and apsarases, making the wise Citraratha the calf.
दुदुहुः पद्मपात्रे तु गांधर्वं गीतसंकुलम् । सुरुचिर्नाम गंधर्वस्तेषामासीन्महामतिः
They milked, into a lotus vessel, the essence filled with gandharva songs; among them, Surucir by name, a gandharva of great wisdom, was the milker.
दोग्धा पुण्यतमश्चैव तस्याश्च द्विजसत्तमाः । शुचिगीतं महात्मानः सुक्षीरं दुदुहुस्तदा
O best of twice-born, the milker was supremely virtuous, and those great souls drew forth pure song as their milk.
गंधर्वास्तेन जीवंति अन्याश्चाप्सरसस्तथा । पर्वतैश्च महापुण्यैर्दुग्धा चेयं वसुंधरा
By that, the gandharvas and also other apsarases live; and again, the earth was milked by the highly meritorious mountains.
रत्नानि विविधान्येव ओषधीश्चामृतोपमाः । वत्सश्चैव महाभागो हिमवान्परिकल्पितः
Various kinds of jewels and herbs like nectar were obtained, and the most fortunate Himavat was made the calf.
मेरुर्दोग्धा च संजातः पात्रं कृत्वा तु शैलजम् । तेन क्षीरेण संवृद्धाः शैलाः सर्वे महौजसः
Meru became the milker, using a mountain-made vessel; by that milk, all the mighty mountains were nourished.
पुनर्दुग्धा महावृक्षैः पुण्यैः कल्पद्रुमादिभिः । पालाशं पात्रामानिन्युश्छिन्नदग्धप्ररोहणम्
Again, the earth was milked by great and sacred trees such as the wish-fulfilling kalpavṛkṣa; they brought a palāśa vessel, cut, burned, and sprouting anew.
शालो दुदोह पुष्पांगः प्लक्षो वत्सोऽभवत्तदा । गुह्यकैश्चारणैः सिद्धैर्विद्याधरगणैस्तदा
The śāla tree, adorned with flowers, was the milker, and the plakṣa was the calf; at that time, the guhyakas, forest spirits, siddhas, and hosts of vidyādharas participated.
दुग्धा चेयं सर्वधात्री सर्वकामप्रदायिनी । यं यमिच्छंति ये लोकाः पात्रवत्सविशेषणैः
This earth, the universal nourisher, bestower of all desires, was milked by whichever beings wished, with their own vessels and calves.
तैस्तैस्तेषां ददात्येव क्षीरं सद्भावमीदृशम् । इयं धात्री विधात्री तु इयं श्रेष्ठा वसुंधरा
She gives to each what they desire, with milk of such nature, according to their vessels and calves; this earth is the nourisher, the creator, and the best among all.
सर्वकामदुघा धेनुरियं पुण्यैरलंकृता । इयं ज्येष्ठा प्रतिष्ठा तु इयं सृष्टिरियं प्रजा
This cow, adorned with virtues, yields all desires; she is the eldest, the foundation, the creation, and the progeny.
पावनी पुण्यदा पुण्या सर्वसस्य प्ररोहिणी । चराचरस्य सर्वस्य प्रतिष्ठा योनिरेव च
She is purifying, giver of merit, auspicious, the cause of all crops; she is the foundation and womb of all that moves and does not move.
महालक्ष्मीरियं विद्या सर्वविश्वमयी सदा । सर्वकामदुघा दोग्ध्री सर्वबीजप्ररोहिणी
She is Mahālakṣmī, knowledge, ever pervading the whole universe; she is the milker of all desires, the cause of all seeds to sprout.
सर्वेषां श्रेयसां माता सर्वलोकधरा इयम् । पंचानामपि भूतानां प्रकाशो रूपमेव च
She is the mother of all that is good, the bearer of all worlds; she is the manifestation and form of the five elements.
असीदियं समुद्रांता मेदिनीति परिश्रुता । मधुकैटभयोः कृत्स्ना मेदसा समभिप्लुता
This earth, known as Medinī, extends to the ocean; she was entirely saturated with the fat of Madhu and Kaiṭabha.
