The Suta said: With his mighty bow, he drove out those various great stones, and then made all the land level.
From that time, O best of twice-born, those stones increased; the son of the king then personally removed his own arrows from her body.
Then Vainya, with a joyful mind, removed them, and by the blows of the arrows, the pits and ravines were made level.
Thus the virtuous Prithu made the entire surface of the earth level; having leveled it, the illustrious one provided her with a calf.
Reflecting again and again on Manu Svayambhuva of old, and on all the past Manus, O best of beings—
The earth had become uneven, and there was no path anywhere; thus, O best of twice-born, the level and the uneven existed together.
Formerly, at the coming of the Cākṣuṣa Manu and at the beginning of the previous creation, the earth's surface was uneven.
There were no boundaries to be seen for villages, towns, cities, lands, or fields.
There was neither agriculture nor trade, nor was cattle-rearing practiced; no one spoke falsehood, nor was there greed or envy.
No one ever acted with pride or committed sin at any time, O best of twice-born, during the interval before Vaivasvata's arrival.
Before the birth of Vainya, only the birth of the people occurred; all these twice-born people chose their dwelling places.
At that time, some settled on the earth, some on mountains, some on riverbanks, in groves, at all sacred places, and on the shores of the ocean.
All those people then made their dwellings in holy places; their food consisted of fruits, roots, and honey.
With great difficulty, O best of twice-born, their food was obtained; Pṛthu Vainya, seeing the hardship of the people,
That wise king fashioned Svāyaṃbhuva Manu as the calf; he himself prepared his own hand as the vessel.
Then Pṛthu, the tiger among men, milked the earth; he drew forth milk consisting of all crops, food endowed with virtues.
With that virtuous food, resembling nectar, those people attained satisfaction; they pleased the gods, the ancestors, and others.
By the grace of Vainya, those people lived happily; after offering food to the gods and ancestors, the people then
Especially to the Brahmins and also to guests, those virtuous people, O best of twice-born, ate afterwards, all of them.
Others worshipped with sacrifices, offering to Janārdana; with that food, the deities attained satisfaction.
Again, the rain-cloud pours down, sent by Mādhava; therefore, the virtuous medicinal plants arise, bestowing great merit.
All the crops are produced by Pṛthu Vainya, lord of creatures; with that food, all people continue even today, always.
This earth was also milked by the sages gathered together, and again by the fortunate Brahmins, the truthful ones, and by the gods.
Soma became the calf in the form of a calf, and the divine preceptor himself was the milker; by whom nourishing milk, nectar-like, was obtained, and the immortals live by it.
By their truth and virtue, all creatures live; the earth milked by the sages yields truth and virtue.
Now, I shall explain how this earth was milked by the ancestors in ancient times, O calf, and by what means.
A suitable silver vessel was prepared, filled with oblation, milk, and nectar; Yama was made the calf, and Death himself was the milker.
Then, O best of twice-born, the serpents and snakes milked, making Takṣaka the calf, using a gourd vessel, and their milk was poison.
For the serpents, the mighty Dhṛtarāṣṭra was the milker; the snakes and serpents, O best of Brahmins, thus continue their existence.
By that same poison, fierce and terrifying in form, O best of Brahmins, the serpents and snakes continue to exist, dreadful as they are.
