एकैकं सप्तधा च्छित्त्वा रुदमानं स देवराट् । एवं वै मरुतो जातास्ते तु देवा महौजसः
The king of the gods, cutting each one into seven, though they cried, thus the Maruts were born—those gods of great might.
यथा इंद्रेण ते प्रोक्ता बभूवुर्नामभिस्ततः । अतिवीर्य महाकायास्तीव्र तेजः पराक्रमाः
As they were addressed by Indra, so they became known by those names; exceedingly powerful, of great form, with intense energy and valor.
एकोना वै बभूवुस्ते पंचाशन्मरुतस्ततः । मरुतो नाम ते ख्याता इंद्रमेव समाश्रिताः
They became forty-nine in number, one less than fifty; they are renowned as the Maruts, always devoted to Indra.
भूतानामेव सर्वेषां रोचयंति गणं महत् । निकायेषु निकायेषु हरिः प्रादात्प्रजापतिः
They delight the great host of all beings; in every group, Hari, the Lord of creatures, bestowed them.
क्रमशस्तानि राज्यानि पृथुपूर्वाणि तानि वै । स देवः पुरुषः कृष्णः सर्वव्यापी जगद्गुरुः
Those ancient kingdoms, beginning with Prithu, were established in order; that god, the dark Purusha, all-pervading, the teacher of the world.
तपोजिष्णुर्महातेजाः सर्व एकः प्रजापतिः । पर्जन्यः पावकः पुण्यः सर्वात्मा सर्व एव हि
He, the lord of creatures, is one, excelling in austerity, of great splendor; he is Parjanya, Pāvaka, holy, the soul of all, indeed all.
तस्य सर्वमिदं पुण्यं जगत्स्थावरजंगमम् । भूतसर्गमिमं सम्यग्जानतो द्विजसत्तम
All this world, moving and unmoving, belongs to him, the holy one; O best of twice-born, knowing well this creation of beings.
नावृत्तिभयमस्तीह परलोकभयं कुतः । इमां सृष्टिं महापुण्यां सर्वपापहरां शुभाम्
Here, there is no fear of return, so why fear the next world? This creation, supremely holy, removes all sins and is auspicious.
यः शृणोति नरो भक्त्या सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते । स हि धन्यश्च पुण्यश्च स हि सत्यसमन्वितः
Whoever listens with devotion is freed from all sins; such a person is truly blessed, virtuous, and endowed with truth.
यः शृणोति इमां सृष्टिं स याति परमां गतिम् । सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
Whoever hears this account of creation attains the highest state; purified from all sins, he goes to the world of Vishnu.
सूत उवाच- स प्रभुः सर्वलोकेशो ह्यभिषिच्य ततो नृपम् । पृथुं वेनस्य तनयं सर्वराज्ये महाप्रभुम्
Sūta said: Then that Lord of all worlds anointed Pṛthu, the mighty son of Vena, as king over the entire realm.
महाबाहुं महाकायं यथेंद्रं च सुरेश्वरम् । क्रमेणापि ततो ब्रह्मा राज्यानि च विचार्य वै
He, strong-armed and great-bodied, like Indra the lord of the gods, was thus installed; and then Brahmā, considering the kingdoms in order—
यद्यस्यापि भवेद्योग्यं दातुं तदुपचक्रमे । वृक्षाणां ब्राह्मणानां च ग्रहर्क्षाणां तथैव च
—began to grant rulership to those deemed worthy, among the trees, the brāhmaṇas, the planets and stars as well.
सोमं राज्ये सोभ्यषिंचत्तपसां च महामतिः । धर्माणां धर्मयज्ञानां पुण्यानां पुण्यतेजसाम्
He anointed Soma as king among ascetics, among dharmas, sacrificial rites, the virtuous, and those radiant with merit.
अपां मध्ये तथा देवं तीर्थानां हि तथैव च । वरुणं सोभिषिच्यैव रत्नानां च द्विजोत्तम
Among waters, he installed Varuṇa as king, and likewise among sacred fords; and among jewels, O best of twice-born, he did the same.
अन्येषां सर्वयक्षाणां राज्ये वैश्रवणं पुनः । विष्णुमेव महाप्राज्ञमादित्यानां पितामहः
Among all the Yakṣas, he again made Vaiśravaṇa king; among the Ādityas, the wise grandsire established Viṣṇu.
राज्ये संस्थापयामास जनता हितहेतवे । सर्वेषामेव पुण्यानां दक्षमेव प्रजापतिम्
For the welfare of all beings, he established Dakṣa as king over all the virtuous.
समर्थं सर्वधर्मज्ञं प्रजापतिगणेश्वरम् । प्रह्रादं सर्वधर्मज्ञं स हि राज्ये न्यरूपयत्
He appointed Prajāpati Dakṣa, capable and knower of all dharma, as lord among the Prajāpatis; and Prahlāda, knower of all dharma, he installed as king.
दैत्यानां दानवानां च विष्णुतेजः समन्वितम् । यमं वैवस्वतं धर्मं पैत्र्ये राज्येभिषिच्य च
Among the Daityas and Dānavas, endowed with the energy of Viṣṇu, he anointed Yama Vaivasvata as king over the ancestral realms.
यक्षराक्षसभूतानां पिशाचोरगसर्पिणाम् । योगिनीनां च सर्वासां वैतालानां महात्मनाम्
Among Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Bhūtas, Piśācas, serpents, and Yoginīs, and all the great Vaitālas—
कंकालानां हि सर्वेषां कूष्मांडानां तथैव च । पार्थिवानां च सर्वेषां गिरिशं शूलपाणिनम्
Among all Kaṃkālas and likewise Kūṣmāṇḍas, and among all earthly beings, he established Girīśa, the wielder of the trident, as king.
पर्वतानां हि सर्वेषां हिमवंतं महागिरिम् । नदीनां च तडागानां वापिकानां तथैव च
Among all mountains, he installed Himavat, the great mountain; among rivers, lakes, and ponds as well—
कुंडानां कूपराज्ये हि दिव्येषु च सुरेश्वरः । सागरं स्थापितं पुण्यं सर्वतीर्थमनुत्तमम्
Among pools and wells, in the divine realms, the lord of gods established the ocean, the most sacred and supreme of all holy places.
गंधर्वाणां तु सर्वेषां राज्ये पुण्ये तथैव च । चित्ररथं ततो ब्रह्मा अभिषिच्य सुरेश्वरः
Among all Gandharvas, he anointed Citraratha as king in their sacred realm; so did Brahmā, lord of the gods.
नागानां पुण्यवीर्याणां वासुकिं च चतुर्मुखः । सर्पाणां तु तथा राज्ये अभिषिच्य स तक्षकम्
Among the Nāgas of virtuous might, the four-faced one installed Vāsuki; and among serpents, he anointed Takṣaka as king.
वारणानां ततो राज्ये ऐरावणमसिंचत । अश्वानां चैव सर्वेषामुच्चैःश्रवसमेव च
Then, among elephants, he installed Airāvata as king; and among all horses, Uccaiḥśravas.
पक्षिणां चैव सर्वेषां वैनतेयमथापि सः । मृगाणां च ततो राज्ये ब्रह्मा सिंहमथादिशत्
And among all the birds, Brahmā appointed Garuḍa as their lord; among the beasts, he then established the lion as king.
गोवृषं तु गवां मध्ये अभिषिच्य प्रजापतिः । वनस्पतीनां सर्वेषां प्लक्षमेव पितामहः
Among cows, Prajāpati anointed the bull as their leader; and among all trees, Pitāmaha made the fig tree supreme.
एवं राज्यानि सर्वाणि संस्थाप्य च पितामहः । दिशापालांस्ततो ब्रह्मा स्थापयामास सत्तमः
In this way, Pitāmaha established all the kingdoms; then Brahmā, the most excellent, appointed the guardians of the directions.
वैराजस्य तथा पुत्रं पूर्वस्यां दिशि सत्तमः । सुधन्वानं दिशःपालं राजानं सोभ्यषिंचत
In the eastern direction, the noble Brahmā anointed Sudhanvan, son of Vairāja, as the king and guardian of that quarter.
