यो मे मृगेंद्ररूपेण भयं दर्शयतेग्रतः । तमहं शरणं प्राप्तो नरसिंहं नमाम्यहम्
He who appears before me in the form of a lion, showing fear—I have reached his refuge; I bow to Narasimha.
मदमत्तो महाकायो वनहस्ती समागतः । गजलीलागतिं देवं शरणागतवत्सलम्
The intoxicated, great-bodied forest elephant has arrived, moving with the playfulness of an elephant—the Lord who cherishes those who seek refuge.
गजास्यं ज्ञानसंपन्नं सपाशांकुशधारिणम् । कालास्यं गजतुंडं च शरणं सुगतोस्म्यहम्
I have sought refuge in him with the face of an elephant, endowed with wisdom, holding the noose and goad, with the face of Time and the elephant's trunk.
हिरण्याक्षप्रहर्तारं वाराहं शरणंगतः । वामनं तं प्रपन्नोस्मि शरणागतवत्सलम्
I have taken refuge in Varaha, the slayer of Hiranyaksha; I have approached Vamana, the cherisher of those who seek shelter.
ह्रस्वास्तु वामनाः कुब्जाः प्रेताः कूष्मांडकादयः । मृत्युरूपधराः सर्वे दर्शयंति भयं मम
The short, the dwarfs, the hunchbacks, the ghosts, the spirits, and all who assume the form of death—these all display fear to me.
अमृतं तं प्रपन्नोस्मि किं भयं मे करिष्यति । ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मदो ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मज्ञानमयो हरिः
I have sought refuge in the immortal one—what fear can touch me? Hari is devoted to Brahman, the giver of Brahman, Brahma himself, and the very essence of Brahman-knowledge.
शरणं तं प्रपन्नोस्मि भयं किं मे करिष्यति । अभयो यो हि जगतो भीतिघ्नो भीतिदायकः
I have taken refuge in him; what can fear do to me? He is the giver of fearlessness to the world, the destroyer of fear, and the bestower of fear.
भयरूपं प्रपन्नोस्मि भयं किं मे करिष्यति । तारकः सर्वलोकानां नाशकः सर्वपापिनाम्
I have sought refuge in that which appears as fear; what can fear do to me? He is the savior of all worlds, the destroyer of all sinners.
तमहं शरणं प्राप्तो धर्मरूपं जनार्दनम् । सुरारणं यो हि रणे वपुर्द्धारयतेऽद्भुतम्
I have reached him for refuge, Janardana, who is the embodiment of dharma; he is the protector of the gods, who bears a wondrous form in battle.
शरणं तस्य गंतास्मि सदागतिरयं मम । झंझावातो महाचंडो वपुर्दूयति मे भृशम्
I will always go to him for refuge; he is my eternal destination. The fierce hurricane torments my body greatly.
शरणं तं प्रपन्नोस्मि सदागतिरयं मम । अतिशीतं चातिवर्षा आतपस्तापदायकः
I have taken refuge in him; he is my eternal destination. Excessive cold, heavy rains, and scorching heat cause suffering.
एषां रूपेण यो देवस्तस्याहं शरणं गतः । कालरूपा अमी प्राप्ता भयदा मम चालकाः
I have gone for refuge to that god in this form; these forms of time have arrived, bringing fear and obstacles to me.
एषां शरणं प्रपन्नोस्मि हरेः स्वरूपिणां सदा
I have taken refuge in these true forms of Hari, always.
यं सर्वदेवं परमेश्वरं हि निष्केवलं ज्ञानमयं प्रदीपम् । वदंति नारायणमादिसिद्धं सिद्धेश्वरं तं शरणं प्रपद्ये
I seek refuge in that Narayana, whom they declare to be the supreme lord of all gods, the primordial Siddha, the lord of Siddhas, the lamp of pure knowledge, without any otherness.
इति ध्यायन्स्तुवन्नित्यं केशवं क्लेशनाशनम् । भक्त्या तेन समानीतस्तदात्महृदये हरिः
Thus, meditating and praising Kesava, the remover of distress, always with devotion, Hari was brought into his own heart.
उद्यमं विक्रमं तस्य स दृष्ट्वा सोमशर्मणः । आविर्भूय हृषीकेशस्तमुवाच प्रहृष्टवान्
Seeing the effort and valor of Somaśarman, Hṛṣīkeśa appeared and spoke to him joyfully.
सोमशर्मन्महाप्राज्ञ श्रूयतां भार्यया सह । वासुदेवोस्मि विप्रेंद्र वरं याचय सुव्रत
O Somaśarman, greatly wise, listen together with your wife; I am Vāsudeva, O chief of Brahmins, ask for a boon, O virtuous one.
तेनोक्तो हि स विप्रेन्द्र उन्मील्य नयनद्वयम् । दृष्ट्वा विश्वेश्वरं देवं घनश्यामं महोदयम्
Addressed thus, the chief of Brahmins opened both his eyes and, seeing the lord of the universe, the cloud-dark, greatly exalted god—
सर्वाभरणशोभांगं सर्वायुधसमन्वितम् । दिव्यलक्षणसंपन्नं पुंडरीकनिभेक्षणम्
He saw him adorned with all ornaments, equipped with all weapons, endowed with divine marks, and with eyes like lotuses.
पीतेन वाससा युक्तं राजमानं सुरेश्वरम् । वैनतेयसमारूढं शंखचक्रगदाधरम्
Clad in yellow garments, shining as the lord of gods, mounted on Garuda, holding the conch, discus, and mace.
ब्रह्मादीनां सुधातारं जगतोस्य महायशाः । विश्वस्यास्य सदातीतं रूपातीतं जगद्गुरुम्
He is the giver of nectar to Brahma and others, of great fame in the world; always transcending the universe, beyond form, the teacher of the world.
हर्षेण महताविष्टो दंडवत्प्रणिपत्य तम् । श्रियायुक्तं भासमानं सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभम्
Filled with great joy, he prostrated himself before him; radiant with fortune, shining like ten million suns.
बद्धांजलिपुटोभूत्वा तया सुमनया सह । जयजयेत्युवाचैनं जयमाधवमानद
With palms joined, together with Sumana, she spoke to him, saying 'Victory, victory!'—victory to Madhava, the giver of honor.
जय योगीश योगीन्द्र जय नागांगशायन । यज्ञांग जय यज्ञेश जय शाश्वतसर्वग
Victory to the lord of yogis, the chief of yogis, victory to the one who rests on the serpent; O embodiment of sacrifice, victory to the lord of sacrifice, victory to the eternal, all-pervading one.
जय सर्वेश्वरानंत यज्ञरूप नमोऽस्तु ते । जय ज्ञानवतां श्रेष्ठ जय त्वं ज्ञाननायक
Victory to you, O infinite Lord of all, embodiment of sacrifice, I bow to you. Victory to you, highest among the wise, victory to you, leader of knowledge.
जय सर्वदसर्वज्ञ जय त्वं सर्वभावन । जय जीवस्वरूपेश महाजीव नमोस्तुते
Victory to you, who knows all and gives all, victory to you, source of all existence. Victory to you, Lord of the essence of life, great soul, I bow to you.
जय प्रज्ञादप्रज्ञांग जय प्राणप्रदायक । जय पापघ्न पुण्येश जय पुण्यपते हरे
Victory to you, whose limbs are wisdom and non-wisdom, victory to you, giver of life. Victory to you, destroyer of sin, Lord of virtue, victory to you, master of merit, O Hari.
जय ज्ञानस्वरूपेश ज्ञानगम्याय ते नमः । जय पद्मपलाशाक्ष पद्मनाभाय ते नमः
Victory to you, Lord whose essence is knowledge, who is attained through knowledge, I bow to you. Victory to you, lotus-leaf-eyed, lotus-navelled, I bow to you.
जय गोविंदगोपाल जय शंखधरामल । जय चक्रधराव्यक्त व्यक्तरूपाय ते नमः
Victory to you, Govinda, protector of cows, victory to you, pure bearer of the conch. Victory to you, wielder of the discus, unmanifest and manifest in form, I bow to you.
जय विक्रमशोभांग जय विक्रमनायक । जय लक्ष्मीविलासांग नमो वेदमयाय ते
Victory to you, whose limbs shine with valor, victory to you, leader in valor. Victory to you, whose form delights Lakshmi, I bow to you, embodiment of the Vedas.
