ध्यायमानस्य तस्यापि विघ्नैः संदर्शितं भयम् । सर्पा विषोल्बणाः कृष्णास्तत्र यांति महात्मनः
While he was meditating, obstacles appeared, causing him fear; venomous black serpents approached the great-souled one.
पार्श्वे ते तप्यमानस्य तस्य ते सोमशर्मणः । सिंहव्याघ्रगजा दृष्टा भयमेवं प्रचक्रिरे
Beside him, as he performed austerities, lions, tigers, and elephants were seen, and they caused fear in Somaśarmā.
वेताला राक्षसा भूताः कूष्मांडाः प्रेतभैरवाः । भयं विदर्शयंत्येते दारुणं प्राणनाशनम्
Vetālas, rākṣasas, ghosts, kūṣmāṇḍas, pretas, and bhairavas appeared, showing dreadful, life-threatening terror.
नानाविधा महाभीमाः सिंहास्तत्र समागताः । दंष्ट्राकरालवक्त्राश्च जगर्जुश्चातिभैरवम्
Various fierce lions gathered there, with faces terrifying, fangs and jaws wide, roaring with great frightfulness.
विष्णोर्ध्यानात्स धर्मात्मा न चचाल महामतिः । महाविघ्नैः सुसंरूढैश्चालितो मुनिपुंगवः
Through meditation on Viṣṇu, that righteous-minded, great intellect did not waver; though beset by great obstacles, the eminent sage remained unmoved.
एवं न चलते ध्यानात्सोमशर्मा द्विजोत्तमः । झंझावातैश्च शीतेन महावृष्ट्या सुपीडितः
Thus, Somaśarmā, the best of twice-born, did not move from meditation; though afflicted by violent winds, cold, and heavy rain.
भंभारावमहाभीमः सिंहस्तत्र समागतः । तं दृष्ट्वा भयवित्रस्तः सस्मार नृहरिं द्विजः
A lion, most dreadful and roaring fiercely, appeared there; seeing it, the Brahmin, terrified, remembered Nṛhari.
इंद्रनीलप्रतीकाशं पीतवस्त्रं महौजसम् । शंखचक्रधरं देवं गदापंकजधारिणम्
He saw the god, resembling a sapphire, wearing yellow garments, possessing great energy; holding conch and discus, and bearing the mace and lotus.
महामौक्तिकहारेण इंदुवर्णानुकारिणा । कौस्तुभेनापि रत्नेन द्योतमानं जनार्दनम्
Janardana, adorned with a great pearl necklace shining like the color of the moon, and with the Kaustubha jewel, was radiant.
श्रीवत्सांकेन दिव्येन हृदयं यस्य राजते । सर्वाभरणशोभांगं शतपत्रनिभेक्षणम्
On whose heart shines the divine mark of Srivatsa, whose body is adorned with all ornaments, whose gaze resembles a hundred-petaled lotus.
सुस्मितास्यं सुप्रसन्नं रत्नदामाभिशोभितम् । भ्राजमानं हृषीकेशं ध्यानं तेन कृतं ध्रुवम्
His face is smiling, exceedingly serene, adorned with strings of jewels; Hrisikesha, resplendent, was certainly meditated upon by him.
त्वमेव शरणं कृष्ण शरणागतवत्सल । नमोस्तु देवदेवाय किं मे भयं करिष्यति
You alone are my refuge, O Krishna, protector of those who seek shelter; obeisance to the God of gods—what fear can touch me?
यस्योदरे त्रयो लोकाः सप्त चान्ये महात्मनः । शरणं तस्य प्रविष्टोस्मि क्वास्ते भयं ममैव हि
Within whose belly are the three worlds and seven others, the great soul—I have entered his refuge; where, indeed, is fear for me?
यस्माद्भयाः प्रवर्तंते कृत्यादिक महाबलाः । सर्वभयप्रहर्तारं तमस्मि शरणं गतः
From whom arise the mighty beings like Kritya out of fear; I have taken refuge in him, the remover of all fears.
पातकानां तु सर्वेषां दानवानां महाभयम् । रक्षको विष्णुभक्तानां तमस्मि शरणं गतः
He is the great terror for all sinners and demons, yet the protector of Vishnu's devotees—I have taken refuge in him.
वृंदारकाणां सर्वेषां दानवानां महात्मनाम् । यो गतिः कृष्णभक्तानां तमस्मि शरणं गतः
He is the ultimate goal for all the hosts of gods and the great-souled demons, and for Krishna's devotees—I have taken refuge in him.
अभयो भयनाशाय पापनाशाय ज्ञानवान् । एकश्चेंद्रस्वरूपेण तमस्मि शरणं गतः
Fearless, destroyer of fear, destroyer of sin, possessed of knowledge, the one who alone takes the form of Indra—I have taken refuge in him.
व्याधीनां नाशकायैव य औषधस्वरूपवान् । निरामयो निरानंदस्तमस्मि शरणंगतः
He who destroys diseases, who is the very form of medicine, free from illness and sorrow—I have taken refuge in him.
अचलश्चालयेल्लोकानपापो ज्ञानमेव च । तमस्मि शरणं प्राप्तो भयं किं मे करिष्यति
The unmoving one who can move the worlds, who is sinless and knowledge itself—I have reached his refuge; what fear can affect me?
साधूनां चापि सर्वेषां पालको यो ह्यनामयः । पाति विश्वं च विश्वात्मा तमस्मि शरणंगतः
He who is the protector of all the virtuous, who is free from affliction, who preserves the universe and is the soul of all—I have taken refuge in him.
यो मे मृगेंद्ररूपेण भयं दर्शयतेग्रतः । तमहं शरणं प्राप्तो नरसिंहं नमाम्यहम्
He who appears before me in the form of a lion, showing fear—I have reached his refuge; I bow to Narasimha.
मदमत्तो महाकायो वनहस्ती समागतः । गजलीलागतिं देवं शरणागतवत्सलम्
The intoxicated, great-bodied forest elephant has arrived, moving with the playfulness of an elephant—the Lord who cherishes those who seek refuge.
गजास्यं ज्ञानसंपन्नं सपाशांकुशधारिणम् । कालास्यं गजतुंडं च शरणं सुगतोस्म्यहम्
I have sought refuge in him with the face of an elephant, endowed with wisdom, holding the noose and goad, with the face of Time and the elephant's trunk.
हिरण्याक्षप्रहर्तारं वाराहं शरणंगतः । वामनं तं प्रपन्नोस्मि शरणागतवत्सलम्
I have taken refuge in Varaha, the slayer of Hiranyaksha; I have approached Vamana, the cherisher of those who seek shelter.
ह्रस्वास्तु वामनाः कुब्जाः प्रेताः कूष्मांडकादयः । मृत्युरूपधराः सर्वे दर्शयंति भयं मम
The short, the dwarfs, the hunchbacks, the ghosts, the spirits, and all who assume the form of death—these all display fear to me.
अमृतं तं प्रपन्नोस्मि किं भयं मे करिष्यति । ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मदो ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मज्ञानमयो हरिः
I have sought refuge in the immortal one—what fear can touch me? Hari is devoted to Brahman, the giver of Brahman, Brahma himself, and the very essence of Brahman-knowledge.
शरणं तं प्रपन्नोस्मि भयं किं मे करिष्यति । अभयो यो हि जगतो भीतिघ्नो भीतिदायकः
I have taken refuge in him; what can fear do to me? He is the giver of fearlessness to the world, the destroyer of fear, and the bestower of fear.
भयरूपं प्रपन्नोस्मि भयं किं मे करिष्यति । तारकः सर्वलोकानां नाशकः सर्वपापिनाम्
I have sought refuge in that which appears as fear; what can fear do to me? He is the savior of all worlds, the destroyer of all sinners.
तमहं शरणं प्राप्तो धर्मरूपं जनार्दनम् । सुरारणं यो हि रणे वपुर्द्धारयतेऽद्भुतम्
I have reached him for refuge, Janardana, who is the embodiment of dharma; he is the protector of the gods, who bears a wondrous form in battle.
शरणं तस्य गंतास्मि सदागतिरयं मम । झंझावातो महाचंडो वपुर्दूयति मे भृशम्
I will always go to him for refuge; he is my eternal destination. The fierce hurricane torments my body greatly.
