In this way, O beloved, sons who take away a trust are seen everywhere in the world, filled with much suffering.
I will now speak before you about sons connected with debt.
Sumanas said: I will tell you, before you, about the son connected with debt—he who, having taken a debt, indeed goes to death.
Becoming a son, or a brother, or a dear father, or acting as a friend, he always behaves in a most wicked manner.
He never perceives virtue; he is cruel, harsh in appearance, and always speaks harsh words even to his own people.
He eats both sweet and unsweet things, always enjoys pleasures, is ever engaged in gambling, and desires the acts of theft.
He forcibly consumes the household wealth, and when restrained, he becomes angry; he reproaches his father and mother day by day.
He is a plunderer, a terrorizer, and speaks many harsh words; thus, having consumed that wealth, he remains at ease.
In childhood, through birth rituals and the like, the cruel one takes wealth; later, through various divisions arising from remarriage and other connections, in many ways.
Thus, wealth is produced in this manner, and likewise it is given away; all the house, land, and so forth are certainly mine alone, of this there is no doubt.
He harms his father and mother day by day, with harsh words, with pestles, and with all manner of grievous injuries.
But when the father dies, he becomes exceedingly cruel even to the mother; devoid of affection and harsh indeed he becomes, of this there is no doubt.
He never performs śrāddha rites or acts of charity; such sons as these arise upon the earth.
I shall tell you, O best of twice-born, of a son who is an enemy; in childhood, when age comes, he always behaves with enmity.
While playing, he strikes his father and mother; having struck them, he goes away, laughing again and again.
Then he returns, frightened, towards his father and mother; he is always angry and repeatedly insults them.
Thus, he always continues in acts of hostility; having killed his father and mother, then again—
Thus that wicked soul departs, due to the influence of former enmity; now, therefore, I shall tell you how one may obtain a beloved son.
Immediately upon birth, he should act with affection, in childhood with caressing and play; having come of age, he should show affection to both mother and father.
He should always satisfy them both with devotion, with affection, with words, and with pleasant speech.
When the teacher dies, understanding this, he weeps again with affection; he performs all śrāddha rites and the acts of offering rice-balls and the like.
He performs them, greatly afflicted with sorrow, and provides for their journey; bound by the three debts, he always feeds them out of affection.
Because of this, a beloved son is obtained, there is no doubt; becoming a son, truly wise, by this very method.
Now I shall tell you, O dear one, of the indifferent son; with an indifferent attitude, he always behaves thus.
He neither gives nor takes, nor does he get angry or pleased; or, having abandoned, he neither gives nor takes, O best of twice-born, being indifferent.
All this concerning the destinies of sons has been told to you; as is the son, so is the wife, the father, the mother, and the relatives.
Other servants are also mentioned, as well as cattle, horses, elephants, buffaloes, slaves, and those connected by debt.
No debt has been incurred by either of us; nor have we accepted any trust from anyone in a previous birth.
We bear no one's debt, beloved, listen to this; nor is there any enmity with anyone from a previous birth.
Neither of us, O best of Brahmins, has abandoned anyone, nor has anyone abandoned us; knowing this, be at peace and cast aside useless worry.
