O most fortunate one, I now call upon that brother; O Viveka, my brother, listen to the words of us both.
Come, come, O greatly fortunate, O wise one, out of affection for me. Kaśyapa said: He arrived, united with Peace and Forbearance, accompanied by his wives.
He sees all, is present everywhere, pervading all, devoted to the essence of all principles; he is the enemy of all doubts, and a lover of knowledge.
Concentration and intellect are the two daughters of that great soul; Yoga is his eldest son, and Liberation is his supreme teacher.
He is pure, without ego, free from hope, without possessions; ever serene in all circumstances, beyond dualities, of great wisdom.
That Viveka has arrived, adorned with the jewels of virtues; whose ministers are the great souls Dharma and Truth, of great understanding.
Endowed with forbearance and peace, that Viveka has come. Vītarāga said this: 'I have come, being summoned.'
Therefore, brother, let the entire reason be told before me, on account of which you have called me here today.
Vītarāga said: The man who stands before you, bound by great fetters, bewildered by the arrows of delusion and the bonds of worldly existence—
He is the all-pervading lord of all, and also my own self; enveloped by the five elements, devoid of knowledge and meditation.
You, who are wise in the principles, question this self. Hearing Vītarāga’s words, Viveka spoke.
Viveka said: O Lord, Universal Leader, it is easy to remain when you are present; but when you have entered worldly existence, what happiness have you yourself enjoyed?
The Self said: Dwelling in the womb is great suffering, unbearable and dreadful, which I have indeed experienced, O wise one, always lacking in knowledge.
Even in the body, deprived of knowledge, I have been born in many ways; having reached the state of childhood, I have done both what should and should not be done.
In youth, I engaged in play and enjoyed many wives; but upon reaching old age, I am tormented by grief for my sons and other sorrows.
Day and night I am burned by the separation from my wife and others; I am afflicted each day by countless varieties of suffering.
O great sage, I do not find happiness anywhere, day or night; thus tormented by such sorrows, what should I do, O wise one?
Tell me that means by which I may truly find happiness, and by which I may be freed today from the great bondage of this flood of worldly existence.
Viveka said: You are pure, free from duality, and sinless, O Lord of the world; go to that great soul who is free from passion and bestows happiness.
Without doubt, you have seen him, unclad and free from all conduct; he is the revealer of happiness and the destroyer of all suffering.
Hearing thus, the pure-minded one again approached the passionless sage; breathing heavily in distress, he spoke these words: 'Listen to my speech.'
Show me the path by which I may find happiness; so be it, O great sage, I will do as you say.
Go again to Viveka, for you have received the news of happiness from him; he will be the one to speak to you of the path to happiness.

Show me happiness, for you have been sent by the passionless one; I have come to your refuge, protect me from the harshness of worldly existence.
Viveka said: Go to Knowledge, O great sage, he will tell you everything; the self, as described, is found where Knowledge is established.
O Knowledge, of great brilliance, revealer of all states, I have come to your refuge; show me the path to happiness.
Knowledge said: I am your servant, O Lord of the world, but you do not recognize me, O virtuous one; by me, through meditation, you were restrained again and again.
Through association with the fivefold elements, you have encountered misfortune; go to Meditation, O great sage, for he will grant you happiness.
Sent by Knowledge, the self, established in Meditation, said: Show me that supreme happiness which is attained through Meditation.
