Thus should you rule the kingdom and become an enjoyer of happiness." Hearing those words of theirs, the self was afflicted with pain.
Desiring to depart from there, he became intent on fleeing.
Kaśyapa said: Distressed in the womb, he became troubled day by day; overwhelmed by suffering, that righteous soul was afflicted by every torment.
Facing downward in the womb, bound by the net of delusion, afflicted by pain and disease, he became bewildered and unconscious.
Overcome by great suffering, he spoke knowledge, though oppressed: The self said—"O wise one, your words were not followed by me then.
Though restrained by meditation, I fell into the distress of delusion; therefore, O wise one, protect me from the terrible dwelling in the womb.
Knowledge said: "I did restrain you, O self, but my words were not heeded; by the fivefold, most cruel ones, you were cast into the distress of the womb.
Now, go to meditation; through that, you will attain happiness. From dwelling in the womb, you will surely attain liberation—there is no doubt.
Hearing those words, and knowing the true nature of knowledge, he invoked meditation and said: "Let my words be heard.
"I have taken refuge in you, O meditation; protect me always." So be it, O wise one, said meditation to the great-minded one.
Hearing these words, the self entered into meditation; together with meditation, he remained in the womb, free from delusion.
When the self entered meditation, the fear born of the womb was forgotten; there, together with the two, the self became free from delusion.
Constantly reflecting only on his own happiness, as soon as he departs from here, he abandons the body composed of five elements.
Thus, dwelling in the womb, the lord continually contemplates in this way; but when the time of birth arrives, O beautiful one, by the will of Prajapati—
The fetus, moved by the wind and the powerful vital breath, then comes to the opening of the womb, measuring twenty-four fingers in length.
When the fetus reaches twenty-five fingers, pain arises; thus, being pressed in this way, he becomes unconscious from the agony, beloved.
Fallen to the ground, endowed with knowledge and meditation, he is separated by the divine wind of Prajapati.
By the mere touch of the earth, knowledge and meditation are forgotten; the self, entangled in the bonds of worldly existence, remains attached out of affection.
Overcome by qualities and faults, enveloped in great delusion, he desires all food and drink and the like, day after day.
Thus, being nourished, the self, together with the fivefold elements, is pervaded by all the senses, which are engaged with sinful objects.
Through attachment to relatives and likewise to wife and others, O goddess, he becomes increasingly agitated and disturbed day by day.
Confused by great delusion, caught in the net of illusion, the lord is like a fish ensnared by a fisherman in the bonds of a net.
He is not able to move at all, so bound is the self—tied by all those strong bonds of the nets of delusion.
Thus, pervaded by this primordial expanse, the all-pervading, he is deprived of knowledge and wisdom, struck down by attachment, aversion, and the like.
Afflicted by desire and likewise by anger, bound by nature and by action, he is born greatly deluded.
Suta said: Thus, when the self is deluded, subject to desire and anger, it is occupied by all those evil ones—greed, attachment, and the rest.
"This is my wife, this is my son, this is my friend, this is my house"—thus, bound by the net of worldly existence and great delusion.
Then, afflicted by various sorrows such as grief for his son, and seized by old age, disease, and also by anxieties—
Thus, the self, tormented by severe sorrows and delusions, is shattered by pride, humiliation, and various kinds of suffering.
Afflicted by old age, O goddess, and by the marks of aging, he constantly thinks of his suffering, crying out in distress, bewildered.
