पुण्ये तिथौ तथा ऋक्षे सुमुहूर्ते महात्मभिः । इंद्रत्वे स्थापितो देवैरभिषिक्तः सुमंगलैः
On an auspicious lunar day, in a favorable constellation, at a blessed moment, the gods installed him in the office of Indra and anointed him with all good omens.
प्राप्तमैंद्रपदं तेन प्रसादात्तस्य चक्रिणः । तपश्चकार तेजस्वी वसुदत्तः सुरेश्वरः
By the grace of Vishnu, that great soul attained the station of Indra; Vasudatta, lord of the gods, performed austerities, radiant in power.
उग्रेण तेजसा युक्तो वज्रपाशांकुशायुधः
Endowed with fierce energy, he bore the weapons of thunderbolt, noose, and goad.
सूत उवाच- उग्रं समस्तं तपसः प्रभावं विलोक्य शुक्रो निजगाद गाथाम् । लोकेषु कोन्यो न भविष्यतीति यथा हि चायं च सुदर्शनीयः
The charioteer said—Seeing the formidable power of all his austerities, Shukra uttered this verse: 'In the worlds, who else will ever be as handsome as he?'
विष्णोः प्रसादान्न परो महात्मा संप्राप्तमैश्वर्यमिहैव दिव्यम्
By the grace of Vishnu, no one else has attained such divine sovereignty here as this great soul.
अनेन तुल्यो न भविष्यतीति लोकेषु चान्यस्तपसोग्रवीर्यः
No one else in the worlds will ever equal him in austerity and mighty energy.
सूत उवाच- कश्यपस्य च भार्यान्या दनुर्नाम तपस्विनी । पुत्रशोकेन संतप्ता संप्राप्ता दितिमंदिरम्
Sūta said: Another wife of Kaśyapa, named Danu, austere in practice, afflicted by grief for her son, arrived at Diti's abode.
रोदमाना प्रणम्यैव पादपद्मयुगं तदा । दुःखेन महता प्राप्ता दितिस्तां प्रत्यबोधयत्
Weeping, she bowed at the lotus feet, and, overwhelmed by great sorrow, Diti awakened her.
दितिरुवाच- तवैव हि महाभागे किमिदं रोदकारणम् । पुत्रिण्यश्चैकपुत्रेण लोके नार्यो भवंति वै
Diti said: O highly fortunate one, what is the reason for your tears? Women in this world do not become mothers with only one son.
भवती शतपुत्राणां गुणिनामपि भामिनि । माता त्वमसि कल्याणि शुंभादीनां महात्मनाम्
O beautiful one, you are the mother of a hundred virtuous sons, the noble Śumbha and others of great soul.
कस्माद्दुःखं त्वया प्राप्तमेतन्मे कारणं वद । हिरण्यकशिपू राजा हिरण्याक्षो महाबलः
Why has this sorrow come upon you? Tell me the cause. King Hiraṇyakaśipu and mighty Hiraṇyākṣa—
यस्याः पुत्रौ महात्मानौ महाबलपराक्रमौ । कस्माद्दुःखं महज्जातं तस्माच्चैव सखे वद
Your sons, both great souls and powerful heroes—why has such great grief arisen? Tell me, friend.
आख्याहि कारणं सर्वं यस्माद्रोदिषि सांप्रतम् । एवमाभाष्य तां देवीं विरराम मनस्विनी
Explain the entire reason why you are now weeping. Thus speaking to the goddess, the wise one ceased.
दनुरुवाच- पश्य पश्य महाभागे सपत्न्याश्च मनोरथम् । परिपूर्णं कृतं तेन देवदेवेन चक्रिणा
Danu said: Behold, O highly fortunate one, the cherished wish of my co-wife has been fulfilled by the god with the discus.
यथापूर्वं वरो दत्तो ह्यदित्यै देवि विष्णुना । तथेदानीं च पुत्राय तस्या दत्तो वरो महान्
Just as before, a boon was granted to Aditi by Viṣṇu, O goddess; so now a great boon has been given to her son.
कश्यपाद्विश्रुतो जातस्त्रैलोक्यपालकः सुतः । इंद्रत्वं तस्य वै दत्तं तव पुत्राद्विहृत्य च
A son renowned from Kaśyapa has been born, the protector of the three worlds; the position of Indra has been granted to him, taking it from your son.
मनोरथैस्तु संपूर्णा अदितिः सुखवर्द्धिनी । कनीयान्वसुदत्तश्च तस्याः पुत्रश्च संप्रति
Aditi, fulfilled in her desires, increases in happiness; her youngest, Vasudatta, is now her son.
ऐंद्रं पदं सुदुष्प्राप्यं देवैः सार्द्धं भुनक्ति च । दितिरुवाच- कस्मात्पदात्परिभ्रष्टो मम पुत्रो महामतिः
He enjoys the Indra's position, exceedingly difficult to attain, together with the gods. Diti said: Why has my wise son fallen from that position?
अन्ये च दानवा दैत्यास्तेजोभ्रष्टाः कथं सखे । तस्य त्वं कारणं ब्रूहि विस्तरेण यशस्विनि
And how have the other Dānavas and Daityas lost their brilliance, friend? Tell me the cause in detail, O illustrious one.
तामाभाष्य दितिर्वाक्यं विरराम सुदुःखिता । दनुरुवाच- देवाश्च दानवाः सर्वे सक्रोधाः संगरं गताः
Having spoken thus, Diti, deeply distressed, fell silent. Danu said: All the gods and Dānavas, filled with anger, entered into battle.
तत्र युद्धं महज्जातं दैत्यसंक्षयकारकम् । देवैश्च विष्णुना युद्धे मम पुत्रा निपातिताः
There arose a great war, bringing destruction to the Daityas; in battle, my sons were struck down by the gods and by Viṣṇu.
तथैव तव पुत्रास्ते देवदेवेन चक्रिणा । वने गतान्यथा सिंहो द्रावयेत्स्वेन तेजसा
Likewise, your sons were driven away by the god with the discus, as a lion would scatter them with his own power.
तथा ते मामकाः पुत्रा निहताः शङ्खपाणिना । कालनेमिमुखं सैन्यं दुर्जयं ससुरासुरैः
Thus, my sons were slain by Śaṅkhapāṇi; the army led by Kālanemi, invincible even with gods and demons, was destroyed.
नाशितं मर्दितं सर्वं द्रावितं विकलीकृतम् । स्वैरर्चिभिर्यथा वह्निस्तृणानि ज्वालयेद्वने
All was annihilated, crushed, scattered, and thrown into confusion, as fire would burn grass in the forest with its own flames.
तथा दैत्यगणान्सर्वान्निर्दहत्येव केशवः । मम पुत्रा मृता देवि बहुशस्तव नंदनाः
In the same way, Keśava utterly burns up all the hosts of Daityas; O goddess, my sons have died many times, and so have your children.
वह्निं प्राप्य यथा सर्वे शलभा यांति संक्षयम् । तथा ते दानवाः सर्वे हरिं प्राप्य क्षयं गताः
Just as all moths perish when they encounter fire, so too did all your Dānavas meet their end upon encountering Hari.
एवमेतं हि वृत्तांतं दितिः शुश्राव दारुणम् । दितिरुवाच- वज्रपातोपमं भद्रे वदस्येवं कथं मम
Thus Diti heard this dreadful account; Diti said: O gentle one, tell me—how has this happened to me, like a blow from the thunderbolt?
एवमाभाष्य तां देवी मूर्च्छिता निपपात ह । हा हा कष्टमिदं जातं बहुदुःखं प्रतापकम्
Having spoken thus to her, the goddess fainted and fell to the ground, crying, 'Alas, alas! What a terrible, painful, and tormenting thing has occurred!'
रुरोद करुणं साथ पुत्रशोकसुपीडिता । तां दृष्ट्वा स मुनिश्रेष्ठ उवाच वचनं शुभम्
Stricken with intense grief for her sons, she wept bitterly; seeing her, the best of sages spoke these auspicious words.
मा रोदिषि च भद्रं ते नैवं शोचंति त्वद्विधाः । सत्ववंतो महाभागे लोभमोहेन वर्जिताः
Do not weep, and may good come to you; those like you, O noble lady, endowed with courage and free from greed and delusion, do not grieve in this way.
