राजानो राजपुत्राश्च ब्राह्मणाश्च विशेषतः । मार्गपालद्यं समुल्लंघ्य निरुजः सुखिनो हि ते
Kings, princes, and especially Brahmins, crossing over the path guardian's ground, remain free from disease and happy.
कृत्वैतत्सर्वमेवेह रात्रौ दैत्यपतेर्बलेः । पूजां कुर्यात्ततः साक्षाद्भूमौ मंडलके कृते
Having performed all this here at night, during the festival of the lord of the Daityas, he should then worship directly, after making a mandala on the ground.
बलिमालिख्य दैत्येंद्रं वर्णकैः पंचरंगकैः । सर्वाभरणसंपूर्णं विंध्यावलिसमन्वितम्
He should draw Bali, the lord of the Daityas, with five-colored powders, adorned with all ornaments and accompanied by a row of mountains.
कूष्मांडमय जंभोरु मधुदानवसंवृतम् । संपूर्णं हृष्टवदनं किरीटोत्कटकुंडलम्
Made of gourd, with great thighs, surrounded by Madhu and other demons, with a joyful face, wearing a towering crown and large earrings.
द्विभुजं दैत्यराजानं कारयित्वा स्वके पुनः । गृहस्य मध्ये शालायां विशालायां ततोऽर्चयेत्
Having fashioned the Daitya king with two arms in this way, he should then worship him in the middle of a spacious hall within his house.
मातृभ्रातृजनैः सार्द्धं संतुष्टो बंधुभिः सह । कमलैः कुमुदैः पुष्पैः कल्हारै रक्तकोत्पलैः
Together with mothers, brothers, and satisfied relatives, he should worship with lotuses, water-lilies, flowers, kalhāra, and red lotuses.
गंधपुष्पान्ननैवेद्यैः सक्षीरैर्गुडपायसैः । मद्यमांससुरालेह्य चोष्य भक्ष्योपहारकैः 6.122.
With fragrant flowers, food offerings, and milk-rice sweetened with jaggery; with wine, meat, liquor, and various delicacies to be licked, sucked, or eaten.
मंत्रेणानेन राजेंद्र सः मंत्री सपुरोहितः । पूजां करिष्यते यो वै सौख्यं स्यात्तस्य वत्सरम्
With this mantra, O king, he, along with his minister and priest, should perform the worship; happiness will be his for a year.
बलिराज नमस्तुभ्यं विरोचनसुत प्रभो । भविष्येंद्र सुराराते पूजेयं प्रतिगृह्यताम्
"O King Bali, I bow to you, lord, son of Virocana; future Indra, enemy of the gods, may this worship be accepted by you."
एवं पूजाविधिं कृत्वा रात्रौ जागरणं ततः । कारयेद्वै क्षणं रात्रौ नटनर्तकगायकैः
Having performed the worship in this manner, he should then keep vigil at night, engaging dancers, actors, and singers for a time during the night.
लोकैश्चापि गृहस्यांते सपर्यां शुक्लतंडुलैः । संस्थाप्य बलिराजानं फलैः पुष्पैश्च पूजयेत्
And with people at the end of the house, he should offer service with white rice grains; having installed King Bali, he should worship with fruits and flowers.
बलिमुद्दिश्य वै तत्र कार्यं सर्वं च पावके । यानि यान्यक्षयान्याहु ऋषयस्तत्वदर्शिनः
All that is to be done there for Bali should be performed at the fire, as the seers who know reality have declared all those imperishable rites.
यदत्र दीयते दानं स्वल्पं वा यदि वा बहु । तदक्षयं भवेत्सर्वं विष्णोः प्रीतिकरं शुभम्
Whatever gift is given here, whether small or great, all of it becomes imperishable, auspicious, and pleasing to Viṣṇu.
रात्रौ ये न करिष्यंति तव पूजां बलेर्नराः । तेषामश्रोत्रियं धर्मं सर्वं त्वामुपतिष्ठतु
Those men who do not perform your worship at night, may all their religious merit, lacking the recitation of sacred texts, come to you.
विष्णुना च स्वयं वत्स तुष्टेन बलये पुनः । उपकारकरं दत्तमसुराणां महोत्सवम्
And, O child, when Viṣṇu himself was pleased with Bali, he again granted a great festival to the asuras, bringing them benefit.
तदा प्रभृति सेनाने प्रवृत्ता कौमुदी सदा । सर्वोपद्रवविद्रावा सर्वविघ्नविनाशिनी
From that time onward, O commander, the festival of Kaumudī began, always driving away all misfortunes and destroying every obstacle.
लोकशोकहरा काम्या धनपुष्टिसुखावहा । कुशब्देन मही ज्ञेया मुद हर्षे ततो द्वयम्
It removes the sorrows of the world, is desirable, and brings wealth, nourishment, and happiness; the earth is to be known by the name 'Kuśa,' and from joy and delight come both.
धातुत्वे निगमैश्चैव तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता । कौमोदं ते जना यस्मान्नानाभावैः परस्परम्
Because of its essence and as declared in the scriptures, this is called Kaumudī; people, for various reasons, mutually experience delight from it.
हृष्टतुष्टाः सुखापन्नास्तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता । कुमुदानि बलेर्यस्यां दीयंते तेन षण्मुख
Because people become joyful, content, and happy through it, this is called Kaumudī; and, O Ṣaṇmukha, lotuses are offered to Bali in it.
अघार्थं पार्थिवैः पुत्र तेनैषा कौमुदी स्मृता । एकमेवमहोरात्रं वर्षेवर्षे च कार्तिके
For the removal of sin by kings, therefore this is called Kaumudī; and only one night and day in the month of Kārtika each year is observed.
दत्तं दानवराजस्य आदर्शमिव भूतल । यः करोति नृपो राज्ये तस्य व्याधिभयं कुतः
The gift given to the king of the Dānavas becomes a model on earth; for the king who performs it in his kingdom, how could there be fear of disease?
सुभिक्षं क्षेममारोग्यं तस्य संपदनुत्तमा । नीरुजश्च जनाः सर्वे सर्वोपद्रववर्जिताः
There will be abundant food, safety, health, and the highest prosperity for him; all the people will be free from disease and untouched by any calamity.
कौमुदी क्रियते तस्माद्भावं कर्तुं महीतले । यो यादृशेन भावेन तिष्ठत्यस्यां च षण्मुख
Therefore, Kaumudī is performed to bring about such a state on earth; and, O Ṣaṇmukha, each person experiences the year according to their own disposition during it.
हर्षदुःखादिभावेन तस्य वर्षं प्रयाति हि । रुदिते रोदते वर्षं हृष्टे वर्षं प्रहर्षितम्
According to the feelings of joy or sorrow and the like, so the year passes for them; if one weeps, the year will be sorrowful, if one rejoices, the year will be full of delight.
भुक्ते भोक्ता भवेद्वर्षं स्वस्थे स्वस्थं भविष्यति । तस्मात्प्रहृष्टैः कर्त्तव्या कौमुदी च शुभैर्नरैः
If one eats, the year will be nourishing; if one is healthy, the year will be healthy; therefore, Kaumudī should be performed by virtuous people with joy.
वैष्णवी दानवी चेयं तिथिः प्रोक्ता च कार्तिके
This tithi in Kārtika is declared to be both Vaiṣṇava and Dānava.
दीपोत्सवंजनित सर्वजनप्रसादं कुर्वंति ये शुभतया बलिराजपूजाम् । दानोपभोगसुखबुद्धिमतां कुलानां हर्षं प्रयाति सकलं प्रभुदं च वर्षम्
Those who, with auspiciousness, perform the worship of King Bali during the festival of lamps, bringing delight to all people, cause the entire year to be filled with joy and prosperity for the wise and happy families.
स्कंदैतास्तिथयो नूनं द्वितीयाद्याश्च विश्रुताः । मासैश्चतुर्भिश्च ततःप्रावृट्काले शुभावहाः
O Skanda, these tithis, beginning with the second, are well known; and after four months, at the time of the rains, they bring auspiciousness.
प्रथमा श्रावणे मासि तथा भाद्रपदे परा । तृतीयाश्वयुजेमासि चतुर्थी कार्तिके भवेत्
The first is in the month of Śrāvaṇa, then the next in Bhādrapada; the third is in Āśvayuja, and the fourth occurs in Kārtika.
कलुषा श्रावणे मासि तथा भाद्रपदेमला । आश्विने प्रेतसंचारा कार्तिके याम्यकामता
In the month of Śrāvaṇa it is impure, likewise in Bhādrapada it is defiled; in Āśvina there is movement of spirits, and in Kārtika it fulfills Yama's desire.
