शूलोद्धृतोपि सुचिरमविनष्टोऽथ नम्रधीः। अन्धको गणतां नीत्वा कृतो भृंगीरिटिर्द्विज
Even after being struck for a long time by the raised trident, Andhaka, his pride subdued, was not destroyed; he was made a leader of Shiva's attendants, O twice-born.
ततो देवान्समाभाष्य शुक्रमुद्गीर्णवान्शिवः। भूमौ निपतितो गर्भस्ततो भौम इति स्मृतः
Then Shiva, addressing the gods, expelled the seed; the embryo fell to the earth, and thus he is known as Bhauma (born of the earth).
शुक्रश्शिवं समाभाष्य गतो दैत्यान्मुदान्वितः। एवं भौमस्समुत्पन्नो हरांशो भूसमुद्भवः
Shukra, having spoken to Shiva, joyfully returned to the Daityas; thus Bhauma was born, a portion of Hara, arisen from the earth.
तस्य पूजा चतुर्थ्यां तु भौमवारे च सुव्रतैः। दशाद्यरिष्टे च तथा गोचरेऽनिष्टराशिगे
His worship is to be performed on the fourth lunar day and on Tuesday by those of good vows, as well as when afflicted by evil planets or inauspicious signs.
त्रिकोणे मंडले चैव रक्तपुष्पानुलेपनैः। एवं वै पूजितो भौमः प्रयच्छति मतिं धनम्
In the trine and in the circle, with red flowers and unguents, thus worshipped, Bhauma grants intelligence and wealth.
पुत्रान्सुखंयशश्चैवकिंभूयःश्रोतुमिच्छसि। व्यास उवाच-। एतद्वः कथितं शिष्या धर्माख्यानं शुभावहम्
Do you wish to hear further about sons, happiness, and fame? Vyasa said: This, O disciples, is the righteous story I have told you, which brings auspiciousness.
यच्छ्रुत्वा न पुनर्भूयो जायते म्रियतेपि वा। द्विजातीनां पुण्यदं च संसेव्यं च शुभेप्सुभिः
Hearing this, one is not born again nor dies; it bestows merit upon the twice-born and is to be practiced by those who seek auspiciousness.
यथासुखं च गच्छध्वं कृतकृत्या ममाज्ञया। ब्रह्मोवाच-। एवं विश्राव्य भगवान्व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः
Go as you please, your duties fulfilled, by my command. Brahma said: Thus, having proclaimed this, the blessed Vyasa, son of Satyavati—
निर्णीय धर्मं विविधं शम्याप्रासमगात्सुत। त्वमपि श्रद्धया वत्स ज्ञात्वा तत्त्वं यथासुखम्
Having discerned the various forms of dharma, Śamya proceeded to the abode; you too, dear child, having understood the truth with faith, act as you wish.
विहरस्व यथाकालं गायमानो हरिं मुदा। लोकान्धर्मं चोपदिशन्प्रीणयन्जगतां गुरुम्
Enjoy yourself at the proper time, singing joyfully of Hari, instructing people in dharma, and pleasing the Guru of the worlds.
पुलस्त्य उवाच-। इत्युक्तः प्रययौ भूप नारदो गंधमादनम्। नारायणं मुनिवरं द्रष्टुं बदरिकाश्रमे
Pulastya said: Thus addressed, the king Nārada departed for Gandhamādana, to see the great sage Nārāyaṇa at the Badarikā hermitage.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे भौमोत्पत्तिपूजनं नामैकाशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the eighty-first chapter, named 'The Worship of Bhauma's Origin on Earth,' in the first section of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
भीष्म उवाच- श्रुतं सूर्यस्य चंद्रस्य भौमस्यापि प्रपूजनं। बुधस्य सोमसूनोश्च पूजनं कथयाधुना
Bhīṣma said: The worship of Sūrya, Candra, and Bhauma has been heard; now tell of the worship of Budha, the son of Soma.
पुलस्त्य उवाच-। तारागर्भसमुद्भूतो बुधश्चंद्रकुमारकः। सौम्यः क्रूरो ग्रहो ज्ञेयः शुभाशुभप्रदो नृणां
Pulastya said: Budha, the son of Candra, born from Tārā's womb, is known as gentle yet fierce, a planet bestowing both auspicious and inauspicious results to people.
शराकारं मंडलं तु बुधस्य परिकीर्तितं। हरिन्मणिसमैर्वर्णैश्चूर्णैः कुर्यात्तु मंडलं
The form of Budha's maṇḍala is described as arrow-shaped; one should make the maṇḍala with powders of colors resembling emerald.
पूजयेत्तत्र गंधाद्यैः पुष्पैर्धूपैस्सुशोभनैः। दानं च विधिवत्कुर्याद्दशारिष्टे च गोचरे
One should worship there with fragrant substances, beautiful flowers, and incense, and give charity according to the rules when Budha is in the tenth asterism or transit.
कर्पूराश्चैव मुद्गाश्च हरिद्वस्त्रं हरिन्मणिः। सुवर्णं च यथाशक्ति दद्याद्बोधनतुष्टये
Camphor, mung beans, green cloth, emerald, and gold as one is able should be given to please Budha.
सोमपुत्र महाप्राज्ञ वेदवेदांगपारग। नमस्ते ग्रहमध्यस्थ प्रसन्नो भव मे सदा
O son of Soma, greatly wise, master of the Vedas and their limbs, salutations to you, who dwell among the planets; always be gracious to me.
इति स्तुत्वा महाराज बुधं भक्त्या समाहितः। प्राप्नुयान्निखिलान्कामान्सोमसूनुप्रसादतः
Having thus praised Budha with devotion and concentration, O king, one attains all desires by the grace of Soma's son.
गुरोश्च पूजनं प्रोक्तं पट्टसाकारमंडले। पीतवर्णैः सुनिष्पन्नैश्चूर्णैराजन्सुशोभनैः
The worship of the Guru is prescribed on a rectangular maṇḍala, made with powders of yellow color, beautifully arranged.
पीतैर्गंधयुतैः पुष्पैर्वस्त्रैर्हेम्ना च पूजयेत्। दशागोचरयोर्दौष्ट्ये दानं दद्याच्च शक्तितः
One should worship with yellow-scented flowers, cloths, and gold; and give charity as able when Guru is in the tenth asterism or transit.
चणकद्विदलं चैव पीतवस्त्रं सुवर्णकं। पुष्यरागं तु विप्राय दद्याच्चारिष्टशांतये
Split chickpeas, yellow cloth, gold, and topaz should be given to a Brahmin for the appeasement of misfortune.
बृहस्पते सुराचार्य सर्वशास्त्रविशारद। दानेनानेन संतुष्टो भव सौम्यो ममाधुना
O Bṛhaspati, teacher of the gods, expert in all scriptures, be pleased with this gift, O gentle one, now for me.
एवं कृते तु राजेंद्र स्वानुकूलो भवेद्गुरुः। सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति नरो गुरुसमर्चनात्
When this is done, O king, the Guru becomes favorable; by worshiping the Guru, a person attains all desires.
भार्गवस्यापि वक्ष्यामि पूजनं नृपतेधुना। यत्कृत्वा सर्वकामाप्तिः सम्यक्पुंसां प्रजायते
Now I shall tell you, O king, the worship of Bhārgava; by performing it properly, one attains all desires.
पंचकोणं समुद्दिष्टं मंडलं भार्गवस्य तु। चूर्णकैः श्वेतवर्णैश्च विधिना सुधिया कृतं
The maṇḍala of Bhārgava is described as pentagonal; it should be made with white powders, skillfully and according to the rules.
श्वेतगंधैश्च पुष्पैश्च वस्त्रैश्चापि सितैस्तथा। पूजयेद्भार्गवं भक्त्या नरः श्रद्धासमन्वितः
With white-scented flowers and white garments, one should worship Bhārgava with devotion, accompanied by faith.
रौप्यं च दक्षिणादानं यथाशक्ति प्रकीर्तितं। दशाद्यरिष्टे चोत्पन्ने सितमश्वं प्रदापयेत्
Silver is prescribed as a gift according to one's ability; when a major misfortune arises, a white horse should be given.
तंडुलाः श्वेतवस्त्रं च रौप्यं चंदनमेव च। कर्पूरं च सुगंधाढ्यं देयं दानं द्विजातये
Rice, a white garment, silver, sandalwood, and camphor rich in fragrance should be given as gifts to a twice-born.
भृगुपुत्र महाभाग दानवानां पुरोहित। दानेनानेन संतुष्टो भव सर्वासुरार्चित
O illustrious son of Bhṛgu, priest of the Dānavas, be satisfied by this gift, honored by all Asuras.
