O illustrious one born from the third eye, O one arisen from the churning of the milk ocean, O resident on the crest of Maheśa, O Moon, I bow to you.
O divine-formed one, I bow to you, O nectar-maker, Lord of the world! In both the bright and dark fortnights, the wise know the three watches of the night.
The mantra to be recited is: 'ū~ hrāṃ hrīṃ, obeisance to Soma.' This should be recited in the morning. Whoever worships Soma thus, recites or hears it, becomes like nectar in this world, birth after birth.
Whoever, on earth, praises and worships with these thousand names, attains imperishable heaven, and rebirth becomes difficult for him.
Thus, in the worship of Soma, in a brass or bronze vessel filled with curd and ghee, one should offer according to one's means, whether less or more, having heard this rite without envy.
Or in a vessel of gold or silver, on an auspicious day, in the dark fortnight on a Wednesday, one should place it in every sacred place and give it to one who has many sons.
Great good fortune arises, exceedingly greater than nectar; for women and men, there is never misfortune.
Desiring beauty and good fortune, I give a vessel filled with curd, placed in a bronze container; grant me beauty and good fortune.
To a Brahmin, as previously stated, a man should give without envy; according to his ability, he should give a gift, as well as new cloth and the like.
He should give all kinds of food, delightful betel, and flower garlands and the like, for the sake of beauty and good fortune.
Whoever thus gives the gift prescribed for Soma to a Brahmin becomes an enjoyer of beauty and good fortune in heaven or on earth.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the first section on creation, the eightieth chapter named 'The Worship of Soma' concludes.
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: I wish to hear, in truth, about the origin of Lohitāṅga, his satisfaction among people, his power, prosperity, and brilliance.
Vyāsa said: The god Kuja, son of the earth, was born from a portion of Hara; established in sattva, full of virtue, heroic, and powerful on earth.
Sharp, fierce among planets, the god Lohitāṅga is mighty; the youthful one, endowed with beauty, is a lord like a flash of lightning.
By him, the demons, eaters of flesh and enemies of the gods, were burned; and from his tenfold yoga, humans, plants, animals, and birds arose.
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: How was he born from Śambhu? How was he born from the earth? How did the planet become a fierce god? I wish to know this.
How does he become satisfied in all worlds at all times? O teacher, with trust in me, speak without doubt from your mouth.
Vyāsa said: In the lineage of Hiraṇyākṣa, among the wise Asuras, there was a king called Andhaka, destroyer of all the gods.
Born by the boon of Viṣṇu, possessing Viṣṇu's might, by him the gods, Indra and the sacrificers, were conquered in turn.
Then the gods went to the Creator and spoke these words: 'By Andhaka, our kingdom, happiness, and sacrifices have been taken.'
Therefore, let the means for his destruction be told and accomplished.' Then the Creator spoke to the gods: 'His death is not at hand.'
There is no boon from Vishnu, nor from consuming nectar; rather, the disgrace of his demonic nature is certain.
For the welfare of the world, I create faith endowed with desire; but all doubt arises only in the pursuit of women.
Having abandoned Parvati, Durga, his mind is not steady; therefore, the Lord of the universe, angered, will render him deformed.
Then, renouncing his demonic nature, his followers will become attendants; having spoken thus, the Lord of creatures created faith endowed with desire.
He sent forth doubt and his own illusion toward him; then, agitated by desire, he became intent on seeking women.
Because of doubt, he could not distinguish between his own wife and another woman; thus, driven by illusion, he wandered through the three worlds.
On the slopes of the Himalaya, he saw a jewel among women, exceedingly beautiful; seeing Parvati, the demon fell under the sway of desire.
Because of the loss of knowledge, he wished to seize Durga; but Uma made herself appear as a hideous old woman.
