This is to be recited, offered in oblation, and performed at twilight worship; it brings all peace and destroys every obstacle.
It destroys all diseases, including those caused by insects, boils, and the like; and diseases such as jaundice and others, even those that are severe.
One-day, three-day, and four-day fevers; skin disease, wasting disease, abdominal disease, and fever likewise.
Stone, urinary difficulties, and various ailments; diseases arising from wind and those originating from pregnancy.
Crushing great diseases, those causing pain; all these are destroyed by the utterance of Āditya.
Protect me, O Lord of gods, in the fear of planetary diseases; all these are pacified when Divākara is praised.
I will declare the root mantra, which fulfills all desires and aims; it always grants enjoyment and liberation, belonging to the great soul Bhāskara.
This mantra is: 'Oṃ hrāṃ hrīṃ saḥ sūryāya namaḥ'; by this mantra, all accomplishments are surely attained.
Diseases do not afflict, nor does inauspicious fear arise; whoever takes the water from the circuit of the sun, in due order,
By merely drinking it, a person is freed from disease; it should not be given or revealed, but recited with care.
To the faithless, the childless, and the heretical worldly people; mixed with pungent oil, it should be administered nasally and orally.
O son, the water from the sun's circuit frees from all diseases; the root mantra should be recited at twilight and in sacrificial rites.
When this is recited, diseases and fierce afflictions are destroyed; what need is there for many other scriptures or for lengthy mantras?
This brings all peace, dear one, and accomplishes every aim; it must not be given to an atheist or to one who reviles gods or Brahmins.
It should be given to one devoted to the teacher, never to others at any time; whoever rises at dawn and recites it daily—
—even a slayer of cows or one ungrateful is freed from all sins; it brings bodily health, increases wealth, and bestows fame.
There is no doubt that one for whom the Sun is pleased is born; whether recited once, twice, or thrice daily, or always—
—whoever recites this in the presence of the Sun attains the desired result; one seeking a son obtains a son, one seeking a daughter obtains a daughter.
One seeking knowledge attains knowledge, one seeking wealth attains wealth; whoever listens with devotion and pure conduct—
—is freed from all sins and even attains the world of the Sun; in the vow of Bhāskara, and in the conduct of vows and sacrifices—
—if recited at holy places, sacred fords, the merit becomes a crore-fold; at times of planetary rites, during food, in worship, or in the presence of Brahmins at a Brahmin-feast—
—whoever recites this, O learned one, obtains endless fruit; and among ascetics, Brahmins, and before the gods, the wise—
—whoever recites or causes it to be recited is honored in the world of the gods.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the first section on creation, this is the seventy-eighth chapter, named 'Appeasement of the Sun.'
Vyāsa said: In the central region, there was a sovereign, renowned as Bhadreśvara; purified by many austerities and various vows.
He always worshipped the gods daily with a pure mind; on his left hand, leprosy appeared, manifesting as a white patch.
Then, by the application of physicians, the symptom was seen as before; summoning foremost Brahmins and ministers, he spoke these words:
The king said: 'O Brahmins, there is a grievous, shameful sin on my hand; therefore, I will go to a great holy place where I shall abandon this body.'
'O knowers of dharma, command me for the good of the next world; O heroes, for one without lineage, what is beneficial hereafter?'
'Tell me, O most gracious ones, what is prescribed, what should I do?' The Brahmins said: 'If you, righteous and wise, abandon the kingdom—'
