The procedure called Arkāṅga I have heard from you in detail; O Lord, I wish to know truly the fruit that comes from the observance of days such as Vārā.
Īśvara said: On the day of the Sun, a man observing the vow should offer arghya with red flowers; by taking only havis food at night, he does not fall from heaven.
By performing all acts of good conduct on the seventh day, especially on the day of the Sun, the Supreme Lord with his attendants becomes pleased.
By observing the tithi and the day, one attains the status of a hero; for as long as the hero Gāṇapatya remains in the sky.
The vow on the day of the Sun bestows all desires, merit, prosperity, and the destruction of disease; it grants heaven and liberation, and is auspicious.
When the seventh day falls on a Sunday, O auspicious one, all acts of vow and worship performed on that day become inexhaustible.
On the pure day of the Sun, one should worship the lord of the planets; having expelled the breath through the mouth, one should place it in the maṇḍala.
Meditating on the two-armed one seated on a red lotus, adorned with a beautiful neck and red garments, with all ornaments red, and holding flowers in both hands, one should cast them to the northeast.
To Āditya we contemplate, to Bhāskara we meditate; may Bhānu inspire us.
Then, according to the method taught by the teacher, one should apply unguents; after the unguent, offer incense, and after incense, a lamp.
After the lamp, one should offer food, then present water; then perform recitation, praise, gestures, and salutations.
The first gesture is añjali, the second is called dhenukā; thus, whoever worships Arka attains union with the Sun.
The terrible sin of killing a Brahmin, the skull clinging to my hand—by the grace of the Sun, I was freed from it on the banks of Vārāṇasī.
There is no deity in the three worlds greater than the Sun; by whose grace I was freed from the terrible sin against my teacher.
Skanda said: Hearing these words from you, O Lord, I was amazed, O Master. Is there any god other than you? How could the sin of Brahmin-killing be in you?
You are the Lord of knowledge, the yogi, the enjoyer in the world, imperishable and undecaying; you alone are the teacher of the gods, O Maheśvara, whose form pervades all.
You are all-knowing, ever-granting boons, the eternal lord of all living beings; O master, how could you have committed wrongdoing, or especially anger?
Śiva said: For the welfare of the worlds, in every age, we—Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara—each act separately, my son.
For us, there is neither bondage nor liberation, nor anything to be done or not done; yet, for the protection of the world, we act according to prescribed order.
All that is supreme, the remover of every obstacle, the pacifier of all diseases, and the fulfiller of every purpose.
That one, becoming many through the divisions of time, is faultless; month by month he shines, and alone becomes twelve.
Mitra shines in the month of Mārgaśīrṣa; Viṣṇu, the eternal, in Pauṣa; Varuṇa in Māgha; and Sūrya in Phālguna.
In Caitra, Bhānu shines; in Vaiśākha, he is known as Tāpanā; in Jyeṣṭha, Indra shines; in Āṣāḍha, Ravi shines.
Gabhasti shines in Śrāvaṇa; Yama in Bhādrapada; Hiraṇyaretā in Āśvayuja; and Divākara in Kārtika.
Thus these twelve Ādityas are proclaimed, month by month, vast in form, of great brilliance, bearing the radiance of the fire at the end of the age.
Whoever recites this daily has no sin; no disease, no poverty, nor any dishonor will ever befall him.
He attains inexhaustible heaven, happiness, sovereignty, and fame in order; I will declare the supreme mantra, which brings universal delight.
