शुक्लपक्षे रविदिने प्रवृत्ते चोत्तरायणे। पुंनामधेयनक्षत्रे गृह्णीयात्सप्तमीव्रतम्
On a day of the waxing fortnight, when the sun is in the northern course, and the lunar mansion is named after a male, one should undertake the Saptamī vow.
हस्तो मैत्रं तथा पुष्यः श्रवो मृग पुनर्वसु। पुंनामधेय नक्षत्राण्येतान्याहुर्मनीषिणः
Hastā, Maitra, Puṣya, Śrava, Mṛga, and Punarvasu—these are the lunar mansions named after males, as declared by the wise.
पंचम्यामेकभक्तं तु षष्ठ्यां नक्तं प्रकीर्तितम्। सप्तम्यामुपवासं च अष्टम्यां पारणं भवेत्
On the fifth day, one meal is prescribed; on the sixth, eating at night is mentioned; on the seventh, fasting is observed; and on the eighth, the breaking of the fast should be performed.
अर्काग्रं शुचिगोमयं सुमरिचं तोयं फलं चाश्नुते । मूलं नक्तमुपोषणं च विधिवत्कृत्वैकभक्तं तथा। क्षीरं वाप्यशनं घृताक्तमिति च प्रोक्ताः क्रमेणामुना। कृत्वा वासरसप्तमीं दिनकृतः प्राप्नोत्यभीष्टं फलं
One should consume the tip of the arka plant, clean cow dung, sumac, water, and fruit; the root, eating at night, fasting according to the rule, and one meal likewise; milk or food mixed with ghee, as stated in order; having performed the Saptamī vow during the day, one attains the desired result.
अर्काग्रं ग्रामात्पूर्वोत्तरदिग्गतार्कविटपस्य शाखाग्रस्थितं। विशिष्टं सूक्ष्मपत्रद्वयं सतोयं दन्तैरस्पृष्टं पातव्यं। शुचिगोमयं भूमावपतितं मद्याङ्गुष्ठाभ्यां पलमात्रं दन्तैरस्पृष्टं सतोयं पातव्यम्। सुमरिचमव्रणमपुरातनं स्थूलमवशुष्कमेकं दन्तैरस्पृष्टं सतोयं पातव्यम्। तोयं ब्रह्मपित्रङ्गुलीमूलप्रसरं पातव्यम्फलं खर्जूरनारिकेलानामन्यतमं दंतैरस्पृष्टं पातव्यं घृताक्तमिति चाहारं मयूरडिंभपरिमाणं। घृतमपि तत्परिमाणम्
The tip of the arka branch should be taken from the east or northeast of the village, from the branch facing the sun, distinguished by two fine leaves, with water, and not touched by the teeth, it should be swallowed; clean cow dung fallen on the ground, measured by the thumb, not touched by the teeth, with water, should be swallowed; sumac, unblemished, old, large, and not dried, one piece, not touched by the teeth, with water, should be swallowed; water from the root of the thumb of a Brahmin or father should be drunk; fruit, either date or coconut, any one, not touched by the teeth, should be swallowed; food mixed with ghee, in the measure of a peacock's egg, and ghee in the same measure.
आत्मनो द्विगुणां छायां यदा कुर्वीत भास्करः। तदा नक्तं विजानीयान्न नक्तं निशिभोजनं
When the sun casts a shadow twice one's own height, then one should recognize the time for eating at night; eating at night is not eating during the night.
प्रथमं पूजयेद्देवं फलपुष्पादिमंत्रकैः। अन्नदानं ततः कुर्याद्विध्युक्तपरिमाणकं
First, one should worship the deity with fruits, flowers, and appropriate mantras; then, one should give food in the prescribed measure.
ततो ध्यानम्-। सर्वलक्षणसंपूर्णं सर्वाभरणभूषितं। द्विभुजं रक्तवर्णं च रक्तपंकजधृत्करं
Then, meditation: One should contemplate the deity as possessing all auspicious marks, adorned with all ornaments, two-armed, red in color, and holding a red lotus in the hand.
तेजोबिंबं बहुजलमध्यस्थं सपरिच्छदं। पद्मासनगतं देवं रक्तगंधानुलेपनं
Radiant like a disc, seated amidst much water, with attendants, seated on a lotus throne, and anointed with red fragrance.
आदित्यं चिंतयेद्देवं पूजाकाले विशेषतः। अथ मंत्रश्चायं-। भास्कराय विद्महे सहस्ररश्मये धीमहि तन्नः सूर्यः प्रचोदयात्
One should meditate on the deity Āditya especially at the time of worship. The mantra is: 'We contemplate Bhāskara, the thousand-rayed; may that Sun inspire us.'
जप्य एष परः प्रोक्तःसप्तम्यां विजयावहः। करवीरैः करंजैश्च रक्तकुंकुमसन्निभैः
This is the supreme recitation prescribed for Saptamī, bringing victory; with karavīra and karanja flowers, resembling red saffron.
पश्चाच्च पारणा कार्या तथाष्टम्यां विशेषतः। अष्टम्यामेव कर्तव्यं नवम्यां नैव पारणं
Afterwards, the breaking of the fast should be performed, especially on the eighth day; it must be done on the eighth, not on the ninth.
व्रते फलं न चाप्नोति नवम्यां पारणे कृते। पारणं त्वपराह्णे तु कटुतिक्ताम्लवर्जितं
If one breaks the fast on the ninth, the vow's result is not attained; the breaking of the fast should be done in the afternoon, avoiding pungent, bitter, and sour foods.
तंडुलं शोधयेद्यत्नात्तृणबीजादिकं त्यजेत्। मुद्ग माष तिलादीनि घृतं च परिवर्जयेत्१०० 1.77.100 ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेद्भक्त्या शक्तः क्षीरादिहव्यकैः। यथाशक्त्यन्नपानैश्च व्यंजनैश्च निरामिषैः
One should carefully clean the rice, removing straw, seeds, and the like; mung beans, black gram, sesame, and ghee should be avoided; one should feed Brahmins with devotion, as able, with milk and similar offerings, as well as food and drink, and vegetable dishes without meat.
विप्राय दक्षिणां दद्याद्विभज्य चानुरूपतः। इमामनंतफलदां यः कुर्यात्सप्तमीं नरः
One should give a gift to the Brahmin, dividing it appropriately; whoever performs this Saptamī, which grants endless fruits—
सर्वपापप्रशमनीं धनपुत्रविवर्धनीम्। मासि मासि द्विजश्रेष्ठ व्रतं कृत्वार्कतुष्टये
It removes all sins, increases wealth and sons; month by month, O best of twice-born, performing the vow for the satisfaction of the Sun—
यः कुर्यात्पारणं भक्त्या सूर्यलोकं स गच्छति। कल्पकोटिं वसेत्स्वर्गे ततो याति परां गतिं
Whoever breaks the fast with devotion goes to the world of the Sun; he dwells in heaven for a million aeons, then attains the supreme state.
इदमेव परं गुह्यं भाषितं शंभुना पुरा। श्रवणात्सततं तस्य व्रतस्य परिपालनात्। श्रावयेद्वापि लोकस्य फलं तुल्यं प्रकीर्तितं
This supreme secret was spoken by Śambhu in ancient times; by hearing and always observing this vow, or by instructing others, the result is said to be the same.
वैशम्पायन उवाच- भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादाच्च श्रुतं मे पावनं व्रतं। अपरं श्रोतुमिच्छामि ब्रध्नस्य च प्रियं च यत्
Vaiśampāyana said: O blessed one, by your grace I have heard of this pure vow. I wish now to hear another, one that is dear to Bradhna.
व्यास उवाच- कैलासशिखरे रम्ये सुखासीनं महेश्वरं। प्रणम्य शिरसा भूमौ स्कंदो वचनमब्रवीत्
Vyāsa said: On the beautiful peak of Kailāsa, as Maheśvara sat comfortably, Skanda bowed with his head to the ground and spoke these words.
अर्काङ्गाख्यविधिस्त्वत्तो मयैवं विस्तराच्छ्रुतः। वारादेर्यत्फलं नाथ श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
The procedure called Arkāṅga I have heard from you in detail; O Lord, I wish to know truly the fruit that comes from the observance of days such as Vārā.
ईश्वर उवाच- रक्तपुष्पै रवेर्वारे त्वर्घ्यं दद्याद्व्रती नरः। नक्ताहारं हविष्यान्नं कृत्वा स्वर्गान्न हीयते
Īśvara said: On the day of the Sun, a man observing the vow should offer arghya with red flowers; by taking only havis food at night, he does not fall from heaven.
सप्तम्याश्च सदाचारं सर्वमेवार्कवासरे। कुर्वतः प्रीतिमाप्नोति सगणः परमेश्वरः
By performing all acts of good conduct on the seventh day, especially on the day of the Sun, the Supreme Lord with his attendants becomes pleased.
शूरस्य सदृशं याति तिथिवारस्य पालनात्। एकेन गाणपत्यस्य यावत्सूरो नभस्तले
By observing the tithi and the day, one attains the status of a hero; for as long as the hero Gāṇapatya remains in the sky.
सर्वकामप्रदं पुण्यमैश्वर्यं रोगनाशनम्। स्वर्गदं मोक्षदं पुण्यं रवेर्वारे व्रतं हितम्
The vow on the day of the Sun bestows all desires, merit, prosperity, and the destruction of disease; it grants heaven and liberation, and is auspicious.
रविवारेण संक्रांत्या सप्तम्या तद्दिने शिवे। व्रतपूजादिकं चाप्यं सर्वं चाक्षयतां व्रजेत्
When the seventh day falls on a Sunday, O auspicious one, all acts of vow and worship performed on that day become inexhaustible.
आदित्यवासरे शुभ्रे ग्रहाधिपप्रपूजनम्। प्राणादहतवक्त्रेण निःसार्य मंडले न्यसेत्
On the pure day of the Sun, one should worship the lord of the planets; having expelled the breath through the mouth, one should place it in the maṇḍala.
द्विभुजं रक्तपद्मस्थं सुगलं रक्तवाससं। सर्वरक्ताभरणं ध्यात्वा हस्ताभ्यां पुष्पं विधृतसंघ्रायैशान्यां क्षिपेत्
Meditating on the two-armed one seated on a red lotus, adorned with a beautiful neck and red garments, with all ornaments red, and holding flowers in both hands, one should cast them to the northeast.
आदित्याय विद्महे भास्कराय धीमहि। तन्नो भानुः प्रचोदयात्
To Āditya we contemplate, to Bhāskara we meditate; may Bhānu inspire us.
ततो गुरूपदिष्टेन विधिना च विलेपनम्। विलेपनांते सद्धूपं धूपांते च प्रदीपकम्
Then, according to the method taught by the teacher, one should apply unguents; after the unguent, offer incense, and after incense, a lamp.
