Now listen attentively to me about the women and men who are always covered in filth and mud, devoid of truth and purity.
Their teeth, hair, and clothes are full of grime; they do not like to clean their homes, seats, or vessels even once.
They do not see happiness; women enter the forest swiftly, absorbed in eating leftovers, spoiled, and impure food upon the earth.
Food, drink, and sleeping in darkness are pleasing; sometimes there is no well-being, and sometimes there is none for the body that is pure.
Such is the mark of the departed among men: they do not know what is beneficial or harmful, friend or foe, virtue or vice.
They do not find, by their nature, places of merit or sin, bathing, worship of gods and twice-born, enemy, friend, or neutral.
Those who dwell among mortals and animals are recognized by those who possess discernment; through intellect, various distinctions arise, yet they wander falsely upon the earth.
Those men are of yaksha form, excluded from all actions; I will declare their distinctions and marks upon the earth.
Born among mortals according to the measure of sin, impure, established upon the earth, city-dwellers in deceptive forms.
The wise call the eater of leftovers and such the crow; the sinful one delights in what is uneatable, the dog is fond of filth.
Engaged in all households, living on edible and inedible things, born in the families of animal species upon the earth.
The dog, grasped by the hand, is fond of eating among the mlecchas, especially among the boars and also among warriors.
Delighted in nourishment and eating, in impure and contemptible things, in gathering wood for the mountain fire.
They should always be understood as mlecchas, fearful of kshatriyas, in worlds where dharma is lost and purity is always absent.
Then, among the noble families, mlecchas will become robbers; through association, relation, and eating together, others will become like them.
Through intercourse with their women, they attain that nature; at that time, all people are afflicted by suffering and disease.
Deluded by famine and food, always oppressed by kings; there, mortals are devoted to falsehood, devoid of all purity.
The collections of Purana and Agama are not heard by people; sinful, fond of wine and meat, eating everything, exceedingly cruel.
Always engaged in cruel conduct, devoted to deceit; they do not nourish sons, fathers, mothers, or teachers.
Servants do not attend to their virtuous master; some women do not honor their husband, nor their father-in-law or their own mother.
There, people constantly endure hardship, and quarrels arise in every household; kings are barbarians and drinkers, as are their ministers and priests.
Their strength comes from people, from fish and meat, and from those who abstain from meat; the leaders are heretics, and the main concern is with qualities and profit.
The earth is filled with wealthy men, slow-witted cuckoos, and such as these; then, everywhere, foolish lovers are found, whether in the forest or in cities.
People eat all kinds of food, both proper and improper, including fish and meat; in the forest, other twice-born also consume what is not to be eaten.
All those who kill a devoted animal go to a state from which there is no return; the sinful ones cause their ancestors to fall, though those ancestors were once gods.
Those who are piśācas, rākṣasas, murtyakas, and guhyakas—certainly, these are attached to disrespect and are neither gods nor humans.
Saṃjaya said: How do those truly knowledgeable recognize the marks among mortals? O lord, please dispel this doubt of mine completely.
Vyāsa said: According to their past sins, asuras, rākṣasas, and pretas are born among twice-born and other castes; they do not abandon their nature.
Those asuras who are born among mortals are always eager for conflict; deceitful, wandering, and cruel, they should be known as rākṣasas on earth.
By giving gifts that disturb people and by worshipping the gods on earth, they gain wealth through harshness and enjoy sovereignty for a long time.
