विमुखाः कातरा भीता ये च मायाविनो रणे। ते यांति निरयं घोरं ये च देवद्विजद्विषः
Those who turned away, who were fearful and timid, and those who used deceit in battle—they go to terrible hell, as do those who hate gods and brahmins.
पतितं मूर्च्छितं भग्नमन्ययोद्धारमाहवे। हंतारो निरयं यांति ते च म्लेच्छाः कुवाचकाः
Those who killed the fallen, the unconscious, the broken, or others' charioteers in battle—they go to hell, as do the mlecchas and those of evil speech.
परन्यासापहर्तारो विमुखास्संति तत्त्वतः। रात्रौ वा विपिने नष्टे चोरास्साहसकारिणः
Those who steal others' deposits, those who turn away in battle, those who are thieves or commit violence at night or in the forest—these are truly such as well.
सर्वभक्षरता मूढा म्लेच्छा गोब्रह्मघातकाः। कुवाचकाः परे म्लेच्छा एते ये कूटयोनयः
Those who are greedy for all kinds of food, deluded, mlecchas, killers of cows and brahmins, those of evil speech, and other mlecchas—these are of false origin.
तेषां पैशाचिकी भाषा लोकाचारो न विद्यते। नास्ति शौचं तपो ज्ञानं न देवपितृतर्पणम्
Their speech is of the Piśācas, and they have no proper social conduct; there is no purity, no austerity, no knowledge, and no offerings to gods or ancestors.
दानश्राद्धादिकं यज्ञे सुराणां च प्रपूजनम्। पितॄणां च न शुश्रूषा द्विजदेवतपस्विनाम्
There is no giving, no śrāddha, no sacrifice, nor proper worship of the gods; they do not serve the ancestors, the twice-born, the deities, or ascetics.
ज्ञानलोपादतस्तेषां मलशौचं न विद्यते। मातरं भगिनीं चान्यां गृहिणीं कामयंति च
Because of their lack of knowledge, they do not observe bodily cleanliness; they desire their own mother, sister, other women, and even their own wife.
सर्वो विपर्ययो लोकात्सदाचारो मलीमसः। तार्क्ष्यस्योद्ववनानां च अन्येषां गोत्रवासिनाम्
All proper conduct in the world is reversed and impure among them; this is true for the offspring of Tāṛkṣya and those dwelling in other lineages.
कुलजातास्सदा दैत्या येषां पुण्यमकारणम्। दुर्गतिं च मृता यांति द्विजस्त्रीशिशुघातिनः
Those born in noble families among the Daityas, who do not perform meritorious acts, after death go to a miserable state, especially those who kill twice-borns, women, or children.
गवाशिनो दुरात्मानो ह्यभक्ष्यभक्षणे रताः। कीटयोनिं व्रजंत्येते तरवश्च पिपीलिकाः
They eat cows, are wicked, and delight in eating what is forbidden; these become insects, trees, or ants.
न मंत्रेषु न देवेषु कल्पंते ते सुरद्विषः। अग्रजः सहजस्तेषां सदृङ्नो ग्राम्यवृत्तयः
They have no connection with mantras or gods, being haters of the gods; their elder and their own kind are similar, and their ways are like those of villagers.
लोमकेशप्रणेतारः क्रव्यभक्षरता भुवि। साहसं च व्रतं दानं स्नानं यज्ञादिकं च यत्
They are covered in hair, delight in eating flesh, and on earth they disregard vows, charity, bathing, and sacrifices.
मत्स्यमांसादिषु प्रीता मृषावचनभाषिणः। सदाकामास्सदा लोभास्सदा क्रोधमदान्विताः
They take pleasure in fish and meat, speak falsehood, are always lustful, always greedy, and always filled with anger and pride.
वधबंधरतोद्वेगा द्यूतसंगीतसंप्रियाः। कुभृत्याः कुजनप्रीताः पूतिगंधरता नराः
They delight in killing, binding, and causing distress, and are fond of gambling and singing; they are bad servants, love wicked people, and are attached to foul smells.
न देवेषु न विज्ञेषु न धर्मश्रवणेषु च। स्तोत्रमंत्रादिके पुण्ये यथाकार्येष्वनिश्चयाः
They have no devotion to gods, no respect for the wise, nor interest in hearing about dharma; they are uncertain about praise, mantras, and other virtuous acts.
बहुरोगाधिरोषाश्च बहुरूपपरिच्छदाः। नरजातिषु दैत्यानां चिह्नान्येतानि भूतले
They are afflicted with many diseases and much anger, and are adorned with many forms; these are the marks of Daityas among human beings on earth.
न जानंति परं लोकं न गुरुं स्वं न चापरं। गर्भपूरणमिच्छंति नातिथिं न गुरून्द्विजान्
They do not know the higher world, nor their own teacher or others; they do not desire to fill the womb, nor do they honor guests, teachers, or the twice-born.
न देवं न सुतं गोत्रं न मित्रं न च बान्धवं। स्वप्ने दानं न जानंति भक्षणान्न परिच्छदं
They do not recognize god, son, lineage, friend, or relative; even in dreams they do not know charity, nor do they care for food or possessions.
गोपायंति धनं यस्मात्ते यक्षा नररूपिणः। प्राणांतेपि धनं किचिन्न दिशंति च राजनि
They guard their wealth, for they are Yakṣas in human form; even at the end of life, they do not give anything, not even to the king.
ते यक्षा दुर्गतिस्थाश्च परार्थे भारवाहकाः। प्रेतानां लक्षणं यद्वा सर्वलोकविगर्हितं
These Yakṣas dwell in misfortune and carry burdens for others; the marks of pretas are also those universally despised by all people.
स्त्रीणां च पुरुषाणां च शृणुष्वैकमना मम। मलपंकधरा नित्यं सत्यशौचविवर्जिताः
Now listen attentively to me about the women and men who are always covered in filth and mud, devoid of truth and purity.
दंतकुंतलवस्त्राणां वपुषो मलसंचयाः। गृहपीठादिपात्राणां सकृच्छौचं न रोचते
Their teeth, hair, and clothes are full of grime; they do not like to clean their homes, seats, or vessels even once.
न पश्यंति सुखं स्त्रीणां विशंति कानने द्रुतं। विघसोच्छिष्टपूतीनां भक्षणेभिरता भुवि
They do not see happiness; women enter the forest swiftly, absorbed in eating leftovers, spoiled, and impure food upon the earth.
अन्नपानं च शयनमन्धकारेषु रोचते। कदाचित्स्वस्थता नास्ति क्वचिद्वा शुचितातनौ
Food, drink, and sleeping in darkness are pleasing; sometimes there is no well-being, and sometimes there is none for the body that is pure.
लक्षणं नरलोकेषु प्रेतानामीदृशं किल। हिताहितं न जानंति मित्रामित्रं गुणागुणम्
Such is the mark of the departed among men: they do not know what is beneficial or harmful, friend or foe, virtue or vice.
पापपुण्यादिकं स्थानं स्नानं देवद्विजार्चनं। अरिमित्रमुदासीनं न विंदंति स्वभावतः
They do not find, by their nature, places of merit or sin, bathing, worship of gods and twice-born, enemy, friend, or neutral.
मर्त्यस्थाः पशवस्ते च ज्ञायंते बुद्धिसंमतैः। बुद्ध्या नानात्वभावाश्च भ्रमंति च मृषा भुवि
Those who dwell among mortals and animals are recognized by those who possess discernment; through intellect, various distinctions arise, yet they wander falsely upon the earth.
यक्षरूपा नरास्ते च सर्वकर्मबहिष्कृताः। एषां भेदं प्रवक्ष्यामि लक्षणं धरणीतले
Those men are of yaksha form, excluded from all actions; I will declare their distinctions and marks upon the earth.
विजाता मर्त्यलोकेषु पापस्यैवानुरूपतः। मलीमस भुविप्रस्थं नागरं छद्मरूपिणं
Born among mortals according to the measure of sin, impure, established upon the earth, city-dwellers in deceptive forms.
विघसादिप्रभोक्तारं काकमाहुर्मनीषिणः। अभक्ष्ये निरतः पापः कुकुरः पूतिसंप्रियः
The wise call the eater of leftovers and such the crow; the sinful one delights in what is uneatable, the dog is fond of filth.
