निपातिता रणे दैत्याः शतशो बलशालिनः। कुबेरस्य गदापातैर्निपतंति सहस्रशः
Hundreds of powerful daityas were struck down in battle; by Kubera's mace blows, thousands fell.
शक्रस्य भिदुरेणैव भेदिता दैत्यपुंगवाः। असंख्याताः पतंत्युर्व्यां स्कंदशक्त्या तथा हताः
By Indra's thunderbolt, the foremost daityas were shattered; countless fell to the earth, slain by Skanda's spear.
गणेशपर्शुपातेन पतंति मुख्यमुख्यकाः। वैकुंठकरमुक्तेन चक्रेण तीव्रकर्मणा
By Ganesha's axe, the chief leaders fell; by the discus released from Vaikuntha's hand, with fierce action—
दैत्यानां प्रवराणां च शिरांसि निपतंति कौ। शमनो यमदंडेन कोटिकोटिसहस्रशः
The heads of the foremost daityas fell to the earth; countless millions were subdued by Yama's staff.
अपातयत्तदा भूम्यां कालः खड्गेन दानवान्। मृत्युश्शक्त्या तथा दैत्यान्पाशी पाशेन चापरान्
Then Time struck down the Dānavas upon the earth with his sword; Death destroyed the Daityas with his spear, and the noose-bearer with his noose subdued others.
पातेन तक्षकादीनां सुधांशोः शिशिरेण च। अश्वारोही खरोमन्योहनिपाशस्तथा गजान्
By their fall, Takṣaka and others were struck down, as well as the moon by cold; the horseman, the angry donkey, and the killer with his noose likewise felled the elephants.
परिघेण गजं कुंभे दैत्यानां नाशयत्ततः। एवमश्वान्गजांश्चैव लाघवात्स न्यपातयत्
With his iron club, he struck the elephant on the head, thus destroying the Daityas; in this way, he swiftly brought down both horses and elephants.
एवं सिद्धैश्च गंधर्वैरप्सरोभिर्महाबलैः। अन्याभिर्देवताभिश्च समातृगणनायकैः
In this manner, the Siddhas, Gandharvas, mighty Apsarases, and other deities, along with the leaders of the mother-goddess hosts,
निपातिता महोघोरा ये ते प्रलयदानवाः। शरैश्च खड्गपातैश्च शूलशक्तिपरश्वधैः
struck down those terrible and mighty Pralaya Dānavas with arrows, sword-blows, spears, lances, and axes.
यष्टिपरिघकुंतैश्च पातयंत्यसुरान्सुराः। एवं संक्षीयमाणेषु दैत्यराट्समपद्यत
With staffs, iron clubs, and maces, the gods struck down the Asuras; as the Daityas were thus being diminished, the Daitya king arose.
आदित्यरथसंकाशं रथरत्नविभूषितम्। शातकुंभमयं दिव्यं घंटाचामरभूषितम्
He mounted a divine chariot, shining like the sun’s chariot, adorned with precious jewels, made of pure gold, and decorated with bells and yak-tail fans.
पताकाध्वजसंपूर्णं रम्यं शक्ररथोपमम्। समारुह्य महावीरो हिरण्याक्षोऽसुराधिपः
Filled with banners and flags, beautiful and resembling Indra’s chariot, the mighty Hiraṇyākṣa, lord of the Asuras, ascended it.
जघान शरजालैश्च दुर्निवार्यः सुरासुरैः। ससैन्यानि गजान्वीरो रथांश्च सह सैंधवान्
He, irresistible to gods and Asuras, struck with showers of arrows the armies, elephants, and chariots, along with the Sindhu warriors.
पातयामास भूमौ च शतशोथ सहस्रशः। एवं चरन्स वृंदेषु निखिलेषु दिवौकसाम्
He brought down to the earth by hundreds and thousands the warriors and chariots; thus, moving among all the hosts of the gods,
पातयामास दैत्येंद्रः शरौघान्मृत्युसन्निभान्। क्रमेण समरे चाथ देवसैन्यान्यमंथत
the Daitya lord struck down with volleys of arrows, resembling death, and then, in battle, he crushed the armies of the gods in order.
यथा पुष्करिणीवृंदे गजः कंजवनं शितैः। शरपातैरथो वेगात्सिंहनादैः पुनः पुनः
Just as an elephant in a lotus pond destroys the lotus groves with its tusks, so did he, with showers of arrows, swift assaults, and repeated lion-roars.
धरण्यां पतिता वेगात्तदा दैत्येश्वरस्य च। दशभिश्च सुतीक्ष्णाग्रैर्जयंतं स जघान ह
By that force, many fell to the ground, and the Daitya lord struck Jayanta with ten very sharp arrows.
रेमंतं पंचभिर्बाणैः शक्रं पंचदशेन तु। चित्ररथं विंशतिभिःपंचविंशतिभिर्गुहम्
He wounded Remanta with five arrows, Śakra with fifteen, Citraratha with twenty, and Guha with twenty-five.
हेरंबं त्रिशरेणैव चत्वारिंशच्छरैर्यमम्। तथैव कालं मृत्युं च पाणिना द्विगुणेन च
He struck Heramba with three arrows, Yama with forty arrows, and likewise Kāla and Mṛtyu with twice as many by hand.
गुह्यकेशं जगत्प्राणं दशभिर्दशभिः शरैः। षडिभश्च सप्तभिश्चैव रुद्रान्सर्वान्पृथक्पृथक्
He struck Guhyakeśa, the life of the world, with ten arrows, and all the Rudras separately with six and seven arrows each.
वसून्सर्वांश्च सशरैः सिद्धगंधर्वपन्नगान्। दशाष्टदशभिः षडिभर्युद्धे देवान्भिनत्त्यसौ
He wounded all the Vasus with arrows, as well as Siddhas, Gandharvas, and serpents; in battle, he struck the gods with ten, eighteen, and six arrows.
ओजौघादतिवीर्यात्तु शीघ्रलाघवर्दशनान्। आपत्प्राप्ताः सुरा भीत्या प्रतिकर्तुं न चेश्वराः
Because of his overwhelming strength and the force of his attacks, the gods, though swift and powerful, were struck with fear and unable to resist.
महेशशूलसंकाशैः शरैर्मर्मविभेदिभिः। ताडिता निर्जरा युद्धे मूर्च्छिता धरणीं ययुः
Struck in battle by arrows resembling the trident of Maheshvara, which pierced their vital points, the immortals fell unconscious to the ground.
तस्यैव संमुखे स्थातुं न शेकुः प्रवरास्सुराः। ततो देवा विनिर्धूतास्त्रिदिवेशेन संयुताः
The foremost gods could not stand before him; then, driven away by the lord of the three worlds, the gods were routed.
शरण्यं ते हरिं तत्र शरणं ताडिता ययुः। एतस्मिन्नंतरे विष्णुः प्राह जिष्णुं खगेश्वरम्
There, wounded, they sought refuge in Hari, the protector; at that moment, Vishnu spoke to Jishnu, the lord of birds.
अधुना गच्छ दैत्यस्य संमुखं रणमूर्धनि। नाशाय सततस्तूर्णं गतस्तस्यांतिकं जवात्
Now go swiftly to the forefront of battle against the demon; always hasten to his side for his destruction.
सरथं मार्गणैर्भित्वा विष्णुमारोधयज्जवम्। रथस्य संमुखे दैत्य उवाच विष्णुमव्ययम्
Having shattered his chariot with arrows, Vishnu quickly restrained his speed; facing the chariot, the demon spoke to the imperishable Vishnu.
अन्य सृष्टिं करोम्यद्य हत्वा त्वां च सनिर्ज्जरम्। ततो विष्णुरुवाचेदं गर्जंतं दैत्यपुंगवम्
Today, after slaying you along with the immortals, I will create another creation; then Vishnu addressed that roaring chief of demons.
शक्तस्त्वं स्पर्द्धने पाप यदि युद्धे स्थिरो भव। ततः शरशतैरेव जघान विष्णुमव्ययम्
If you are capable in contest, O wicked one, then stand firm in battle; then he struck the imperishable Vishnu with a shower of arrows.
असंभ्रांतः स चिच्छेद यमदंडनिभान्शरान्। पुनः शरसहस्राणि प्रेरयामास तं रणे
Undisturbed, he cut down the arrows resembling the staff of Yama, and again sent forth thousands of arrows at him in battle.
