Thus, in the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the first section on creation, the seventy-fourth chapter named 'The Destruction of Tripura' concludes.
Vyāsa said: Having heard the words of Maheśvara, the gods, led by Indra, rushed in all directions against the hosts of demons.
Then came the mighty demon named Kumbha; the lord of the Nairṛtas struck the king of the Yakṣas fiercely with his mace.
Guhyaka, with blows of his mace, struck back fiercely; then between them arose a dreadful duel with maces.
There was a great formation of wheels, a mighty blockade, a binding for the defense of the front, a formidable and dense array, and vehicles smeared with oil for bursting.
After waging a great battle, at the end, the Lord of Wealth struck that bursting vehicle upon the chest of Kumbha.
Then Kumbha, his fangs broken, fell to the earth; mighty Jambha, standing on his chariot, at that moment struck Harihaya.
With volleys of arrows, he fiercely attacked Airavana; Indra, with his thunderbolt, pierced the foremost among the asuras.
He fell upon the earth's surface, his life departed and blood-soaked; thus, the forest became both dreadful and peaceful, yet truly terrifying.
In battle, he pierced four chief leaders with his spear; and, with swiftness, he cast down each commander.
Jayanta subdued Saurabha with volleys of arrows; and, with his spear in hand, he overcame Samhrada, Yamadanda, and Narantaka.
Having slain them, he cast them down, their bodies reduced to ashes; Kala, with a sword strike, brought down Babhrava.
With his spear, Mrityu pierced the horse, as well as Nirghrinaka in battle; and, burned by fire, these seven mighty warriors perished.
Bhadrabahu, the great-armed, Sugandha, Gandha himself, Bhaurika, Vallika, and Bhima—these were the leaders of the army.
Their bodies burned in battle, they fell lifeless to the earth; bound by Varuna's noose, these mighty warriors met their end.
Great-souled heroes, fierce and terrifying, fell to the earth; five danavas were struck down by the rays of Surya.
Turutu, Tumburu, Durmedhas, Sadhaka, Sadhaka by name, Krura, Kraunca, Ranesha, Moda, Sammoda, and Shanmukha—
The daityas were struck down in battle by Matariśvan's arrows; Nairrita, with his mace, cast down Bhima to the earth.
By the Rudras' spear strikes, hundreds of daityas and danavas fell in battle, terrified, facing the masters of war.
By the Vasus' arrow volleys, by the rays of the heroic ones, by the hailstones of the clouds, and by the fierce thunderbolt strikes—
Hundreds of powerful daityas were struck down in battle; by Kubera's mace blows, thousands fell.
By Indra's thunderbolt, the foremost daityas were shattered; countless fell to the earth, slain by Skanda's spear.
By Ganesha's axe, the chief leaders fell; by the discus released from Vaikuntha's hand, with fierce action—
The heads of the foremost daityas fell to the earth; countless millions were subdued by Yama's staff.
Then Time struck down the Dānavas upon the earth with his sword; Death destroyed the Daityas with his spear, and the noose-bearer with his noose subdued others.
By their fall, Takṣaka and others were struck down, as well as the moon by cold; the horseman, the angry donkey, and the killer with his noose likewise felled the elephants.
With his iron club, he struck the elephant on the head, thus destroying the Daityas; in this way, he swiftly brought down both horses and elephants.
In this manner, the Siddhas, Gandharvas, mighty Apsarases, and other deities, along with the leaders of the mother-goddess hosts,
struck down those terrible and mighty Pralaya Dānavas with arrows, sword-blows, spears, lances, and axes.
With staffs, iron clubs, and maces, the gods struck down the Asuras; as the Daityas were thus being diminished, the Daitya king arose.
