ततस्तयोर्गदायुद्धमवर्तत मुहुर्मुहुः। तयोः प्रहरतोः शब्दो गदापातोद्भवो ध्रुवं
Then, between the two, a mace duel took place again and again; the sound of their blows, produced by the striking of maces, was constant.
आवर्तं परिवर्तं च चक्रतुस्तौ पुनः पुनः। अध ऊर्ध्वं प्रहारं च पार्श्वयोरतिभीषणं
They circled and wheeled around each other repeatedly, striking upwards, downwards, and with terrifying blows to the sides.
बभूवैवं तयोर्युद्धं लोकालोकभयंकरं। दृष्ट्वा देवगणाः सिद्धा दानवा विस्मयं गताः
Thus their battle became fearsome, threatening both worlds of the living and the dead; seeing this, the hosts of gods, siddhas, and dānavas were amazed.
युद्ध्यमानौ तु तौ वीरौ मृत्युसंशयमागतौ। देवदानववीराश्च द्रष्टुं नैव तदीशिरे
Those two heroes, fighting, approached the very threshold of death; neither the gods nor the dānava warriors were able to watch.
ईशब्रह्मादयः खे तु स्थिता द्रष्टुं तदद्भुतं। तयोर्हुंकारशब्देन गदापातस्वनेन च
But Īśa, Brahmā, and the others remained in the sky to witness that wonder; the sound of their roars and the crash of their maces resounded.
ऊर्ध्वोर्ध्वमगमच्छब्दो ह्यशनेश्चोपजायते। भग्ने गदे द्वयोरेव करः संपुटितस्तयोः
The sound rose ever higher, like thunder; when both their maces broke, their hands were joined in readiness.
एवं चैवार्धयामेन तयोरस्त्रे निपेततुः। एतस्मिंन्नन्तरे वीरौ खड्गचर्मधरौ तदा
Thus, in the middle of the duel, both their weapons fell to the ground; at that moment, the two heroes took up swords and shields.
प्रतियोद्धुं महाघोरमाहवे संप्रचेरतुः। निस्त्रिंशौ विद्युदुल्काभौ तयोर्गात्रे च चर्मणी
To continue the dreadful combat, they advanced to face each other; their swords flashed like lightning, and their shields covered their bodies.
दृश्येते सर्वलोकैश्च लाघवं विस्मयं गतैः। चिच्छिदाते तयोरेव चर्मणी बहुवर्णके
All the worlds beheld their skill with wonder; the two of them slashed each other's many-colored shields.
भीष्मकं बलयुद्धं च तयोरेवं प्रवर्तते। मंडलं चक्रधन्वं च लाघवं च परिप्लुतं
Thus, a terrible contest of strength unfolded between them, with circular maneuvers, whirling weapons, and displays of agility.
वृत्रवासवयोर्युद्धं वृत्रवासवयोरिव। केशान्वृत्रस्य उत्प्लुत्य संप्रधृत्यासिना द्रुतं
The battle of Vṛtra and Vāsava was like that of Vṛtra and Vāsava of old; leaping upon Vṛtra's hair, he swiftly seized it with his sword.
शिरश्चिच्छेद सहसा मघवा रणमूर्धनि। जयशब्दस्ततस्त्वासीद्देवानां च समंततः
Maghavan suddenly struck off his head in the midst of battle; then, all around, the gods raised a cry of victory.
प्रोत्फुल्लहृदया देवा मघवंतमपूजयन्। देवदुंदुभयो नेदुर्ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
With hearts blossoming with joy, the gods worshipped Maghavan; the divine drums resounded, and the hosts of apsarases danced.
गीतं गायंति गंधर्वा मुनयः स्तुतिपाठकाः। भीताः पलायिताः सर्वे दैत्यास्त्यक्तायुधा दिशः
The gandharvas sang songs, the sages recited hymns of praise; all the daityas, terrified, fled in all directions, abandoning their weapons.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे वृत्रासुरवधोनाम त्रिसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purana, in the first section on creation, ends the seventy-third chapter, entitled 'The Slaying of Vṛtrāsura.'
व्यास उवाच- चतुर्भिस्तुरगैर्जुष्टं रथं सूर्यसमप्रभं। त्रैपुरिः संरुरोहाथाब्रवीद्वाक्यं गणाधिपं
Vyasa said: Traipuri, mounting a chariot adorned with four horses and shining like the sun, then approached and spoke to the lord of the ganas.
पिता मे निहतः पित्रा तव यस्माद्गणाधिप। तस्मात्त्वामद्य विशिखैर्नयामि यमसादनं
"Because my father was slain by your father, O lord of the ganas, therefore today I will send you, pierced by arrows, to the abode of Yama."
ततस्तमब्रवीद्देवो गणेशस्त्रिपुरात्मजं। तव तातेन दुष्टेन सुराणामहितं पुरा
Then the god Ganesha spoke to the son of Tripura: "Your wicked father once committed a great sin against the gods.
कृतं कर्ममहत्पापं श्रुतं नो जनकेन हि। पापकर्मरतं दुष्टं ज्ञात्वा ज्ञानबलेन च
"We have heard of the great sinful deed done by your father; knowing him to be wicked and devoted to evil acts, by the power of knowledge—
अवधीत्तं शरैकेन पितरं ते बलेन च। पंकात्प्रतारितो मोहात्प्रेषितो यममंदिरं
"He was slain by a single arrow, by force, and sent, deluded and dragged from the mire, to the abode of Yama.
त्वां चाहं तत्पथं दैत्य प्रेषयामि क्षणादिह। उक्तवंतं महाप्राज्ञं सुराणां च गणाधिपं
"And now, O demon, I will send you on that same path at once," said the wise lord of the ganas to him.
विव्याध दशभिस्तीक्ष्णैः कालानलसमप्रभैः। ततः शरसहस्रैस्तु दैत्यं विव्याध साहसात्
He pierced him with ten sharp arrows, blazing like the fire of time; then, with a thousand arrows, he struck the demon with force.
यमदंडसमैर्बाणैः क्षुरप्रैश्च शिलीमुखैः। कंकपत्रैर्महातीक्ष्णैर्वज्रानलसमप्रभैः
With arrows as fierce as Yama's staff, with razors, iron-tipped shafts, and barbed arrows, sharp as thunderbolts and blazing like fire—
विचकर्त शरांश्चास्य लंबोदरः सुरार्चितः। पुनर्विव्याध विशिखैः सहसाभि दुरोपमैः
Lambodara, worshipped by the gods, cut down his arrows, and again struck him suddenly with arrows hard to withstand.
शरैरर्दितसर्वांगो मूर्च्छितस्त्वपतद्भुवि। ततो भद्रश्च सौभद्रो भीषणो निर्जरांतकः
His whole body pierced by arrows, he fainted and fell to the ground; then Bhadra, Saubhadra, Bhishana, and Nirjarantaka—
स्वां स्वां गदां समादाय दुद्रुवुस्तं विनायकम्। युगपत्ते गदापातैर्निजघ्नुर्गणनायकम्
Each took up their own mace and rushed at Vinayaka; together, with blows from their maces, they struck the leader of the ganas.
लाघवात्तु वृथा कृत्वा गदास्तेषां महाबलः। भद्रकस्य तु शीर्षे चाहनत्परशुना तदा
But by his agility, the mighty one rendered their maces useless; then he struck Bhadra on the head with his axe.
सौभद्रस्योत्तमांगं च असिनाग्रे निपातितम्। भीषणस्य कुठारेण खड्गेन निर्जरांतकम्
He cut off Saubhadra's head with the edge of his sword; Bhishana with his axe, and Nirjarantaka with his sword.
पातयित्वा च हेरम्बो महागिरिसमांस्तदा। चतुरो गणमुख्यांश्च अन्यांश्चापातयद्द्विषः
Then Heramba, as massive as a great mountain, struck them down; he felled the four chief ganas and other enemies as well.
ततः संज्ञां समालभ्य त्रैपुरिश्चासुरोत्तमः। समारुह्य रथं स्वं च जघान सुरसत्तमम्
Then, regaining consciousness, Traipuri, the foremost of asuras, mounted his own chariot and struck the best of the gods.
