मधुस्तदागतस्तूर्णमंतर्धानं तमोवृतः। पातयामास विष्णौ च मायया शतपर्वतान्
Then Madhū arrived swiftly, concealed by darkness; with illusion, he cast a hundred mountains upon Viṣṇu.
ततस्तान्पर्वतांश्छित्वा तमसोऽन्तर्गतो युधि। क्रोधात्सुदर्शनेनैव शिरश्छित्वा निपातितः
Then, cutting those mountains, he entered the darkness in battle; out of anger, with Sudarśana, he cut off the head and it fell.
ततो ब्रह्मादिभिर्देवैश्शंभुना त्रिदशैरपि। मधुसूदन इतिख्यातिर्विष्णोर्लोकेषु कारिता
Then by Brahmā and the other gods, by Śaṃbhu and the thirty gods, the fame of Viṣṇu as 'Madhusūdana' was established in the worlds.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे मधुवधोनामद्विसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the first section of Creation, the seventy-second chapter named 'The Slaying of Madhu.'
व्यास उवाच- ततो वृत्रो महातेजा दैत्यानां प्रवरो युधि। दिग्गजाढ्यं गजारूढः प्राद्रवद्बलसूदनम्
Vyāsa said: Then Vṛtra, of great brilliance, foremost among the demons in battle, mounted on an elephant, rushed toward the destroyer of forces.
आगच्छंतं ततो वृत्रं शरैः कालानलप्रभैः। विव्याध सर्वगात्रेषु द्विरदस्थो महाहवे
As Vṛtra approached, mounted on the elephant, he was pierced in all his limbs by arrows shining like the fire of time in the great battle.
ततो वृत्रस्तु शीर्षं च जिष्णोरेव पतत्रिणा। विव्याध सहसा तेन स चचाल महाबलः
Then Vṛtra suddenly struck the head of the victorious one, the wielder of the thunderbolt, and that mighty one was shaken.
आत्मानं च समाश्वास्य धनुरुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्। ववर्ष शरवर्षेण तस्य दैत्यस्य विग्रहे
Regaining his composure, the valiant one raised his bow and showered a rain of arrows upon the body of that demon.
शरांश्छित्वा बिभेदाशु शरैराशीविषोपमैः। शतक्रतुं महावीर्यः सर्वदेवाधिपं युधि
Cutting down the arrows, the mighty Vṛtra swiftly pierced Śatakratu, the lord of all the gods, in battle with arrows like venomous serpents.
ततः शरसहस्रैस्तु दैत्यं विव्याध देवराट्। परस्परं शरा यांति यथा सप्ताश्व रश्मयः
Then the king of the gods struck the demon with thousands of arrows, and their arrows met each other like the rays of the sun's seven horses.
एवं शरसहस्रैस्तु बिभिदाते परस्परम्। मनोजवसमाः शीघ्रा गाढाः शिखरिणो यथा
Thus, with thousands of arrows, they pierced each other, swift as the wind, dense as mountain peaks.
बडवानलसंस्पर्शाः खगा वज्रारभेदकाः। तयोर्धनुष्मतोर्युद्धे शरास्तुल्यगुणान्विताः
Their arrows in that duel, fired by both archers, were like the touch of submarine fire, sharp as thunderbolts, and equal in quality.
एवं क्रमेण युद्धे च अहोरात्रमवर्तत। महेंद्रो द्विरदं तस्य शूलेनैव जघान ह
In this way, the battle continued for a day and night; then Mahendra struck his elephant with a spear.
स निपत्य महीपृष्ठे लाघवात्स्वरथं ययौ। रथस्थस्तस्य देवस्य शक्त्या चैरावणं दृढम्
Falling to the earth, he quickly mounted his own chariot; standing on his chariot, the god struck Airāvata hard with a spear.
बिभेद लाघवेनाशु वज्रेणेव महागिरिं। शुशुभे कंपमानस्तु सेंद्रः स च महागजः
With swiftness, he pierced him as if with a thunderbolt splitting a great mountain; the trembling Indra and the great elephant shone brilliantly.
ततः शक्तिं समादाय आविध्य मघवाऽसुरम्। बिभेदोरसि दैत्यस्य स पपात रथोपरि
Then Maghavan, taking up his spear, hurled it at the demon and pierced the demon's chest; he fell upon the chariot.
क्षणात्संज्ञां समालंब्य स विनद्य पतत्त्रिणा। बिभेद समरे शक्रं स ततः कश्मलं गतः
Regaining consciousness in a moment, roaring, the winged one struck Śakra in battle, and then he became faint.
इंद्रः संज्ञां पुनः प्राप्य जघान विशिखैः शितैः। शतकोटिसमैर्बाणैरर्दितो व्यथयान्वितः
Indra, regaining his senses, struck with sharp arrows; afflicted by a hundred million arrows, he was filled with pain.
ततो वृत्रो महाशूलं प्राक्षिपन्निर्जरेश्वरे। शांभवास्त्रेण देवेशो वैष्णवास्त्रं मुमोच ह
Then Vṛtra hurled a great spear at the lord of the immortals; the lord of the gods released the Vaiṣṇava missile with the Śaṃbhava weapon.
उभयोरंबरे चास्त्रे वह्निकूटसमप्रभे। अन्योन्यं जघ्नतुस्तत्र स्फुलिगानि विमुंचती
In the sky, both weapons, blazing like peaks of fire, struck each other there, releasing sparks.
स्पर्शने च स्फुलिंगानामुभयोः सेनयोर्भटाः। न शक्ताः संमुखे स्थातुं शलभा ज्वलने यथा
At the touch of those sparks, the warriors of both armies could not stand before them, like moths before a flame.
दग्धाः पेतुः पृथिव्यां च दिशस्सर्वाः प्रदुद्रुवुः। देवदानवयोर्वीराः शून्यस्तत्राभवद्रणः
Burned, they fell to the earth, and all directions fled; the battlefield of gods and demons became empty.
अस्त्रं निरस्तकं दृष्ट्वा स दैत्यः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। मायया शैलसंदोहमस्त्रं शक्रे मुमोच ह
Seeing his weapon neutralized, the demon, maddened by anger, released a mountain-mass missile against Śakra by his magic power.
बाणौघैः शैलसंघातं प्रचिच्छेद रणे हरिः। अघोरं प्रासृजद्दैत्यः पुरुहूते महाबले
With torrents of arrows, Hari cut apart the mass of mountains in battle; the fierce demon hurled another terrible weapon at the mighty Puruhūta.
कोटिकोटिसहस्राणि जंतूनां प्रवराणि च। सिंहशार्दूलभल्लूक वृक व्याघ्र महागजाः
Hundreds of millions of creatures, the foremost among them—lions, tigers, bears, wolves, leopards, and great elephants—
दंदशूकादयः सत्वाः प्रधावंति सुरेश्वरं। क्षुरप्रैरर्धचंद्रैश्च भल्लैः शिलीमुखैस्तथा
Serpents and other beings rushed at the lord of the gods, armed with razors, half-moon shaped arrows, and also with barbed and iron-tipped shafts.
असंप्राप्तान्प्रचिच्छेद मघवा परवीरहा। ततो वृत्रो महाबाहुर्धनुरुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्
Maghavan, the slayer of enemy heroes, cut down those who had not yet reached him; then Vṛtra, mighty-armed and powerful, raised his bow.
बिभेद शरसाहस्रैर्वज्रकल्पैः शतक्रतुं। छित्वा क्षुरप्रैश्शक्रश्च धनुस्तस्य चकर्त च
He pierced Śatakratu with thousands of arrows, hard as thunderbolts; but Śakra cut his bow with razor-sharp arrows.
सूतं चाश्वान्पृथिव्यां च पातयामास तत्क्षणात्। सकंटकांगदां भीमां संपूज्यासुरसत्तमः
In that instant, he struck down his charioteer and horses to the ground; the best of asuras, fierce and adorned with thorny armlets, was honored.
जघान पद्मिनः शीर्षे मोहाद्दंती क्षितिं ययौ। सगदः सर्वदेवेशो धरणीं समुपस्थितः
Deluded, he struck the head of Padmin with his tusk, and the elephant fell to the earth; the lord of all the gods, still holding his mace, stood upon the ground.
