सर्वसाक्षी त्वयं देवो दैत्यजिष्णुर्युगे युगे। कथं हंति सुरान्सर्वान्कल्पांत इह जायते
This god is the witness of all, the slayer of demons in every age; how does he destroy all the gods, and at the end of the cycle, is he born here?
एतस्मिन्नंतरे दूरे मधुर्मायां प्रयोजिता। हररूपधरो भूत्वा अब्रवीद्धरिमव्ययम्
Meanwhile, at a distance, Madhu employed his illusion; taking the form of Hara, he spoke to the imperishable Hari.
दैत्यानामग्रतः पाप रणे देवान्समंततः। हत्वा किं ते शिवं चाद्य धर्मकीर्ति यशो गुणाः
In front of the demons, O sinner, you have slain the gods in battle; what benefit, what righteousness, what fame or virtue is there for you today?
महतोन्मत्तभावेन न जानासि परान्स्वकान्। अतस्त्वां निशितैर्बाणैर्नयामि यमसादनम्
In your great intoxication, you do not know friend from foe; therefore, with sharp arrows, I will send you to the abode of Yama.
एवमुक्त्वा शरैरुग्रैर्जघान केशवं रणे। निचकर्त शरांस्तांस्तु माधवो वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Having spoken thus, he struck Keśava in battle with fierce arrows; Mādhava cut down those arrows and spoke these words:
जानामि त्वां रणे दैत्यं हररूपधरं प्रियम्। शूरं शूरविकर्माणं मधुं मायानियोजितम्
I know you in battle, demon, bearing the form of Hara, dear one; a hero, heroic in deeds, Madhu, employing illusion.
मिथ्यालोकं प्रदास्यामि पातयित्वा रणाजिरे। एतस्मिन्नंतरे तीक्ष्णैः शरैर्विव्याध संयुगे
I will grant you a false world, having cast you down on the battlefield; meanwhile, he pierced him in combat with sharp arrows.
जटिलं वृषकेतुं च वृषभस्थं महेश्वरम्। तयोर्युद्धमतीवासीद्देवदानवयोस्तदा
The matted-haired, the bearer of the bull-banner, Maheśvara seated upon the bull—there was a fierce battle between the gods and the demons at that time.
परस्परं भिंदतोश्च प्राप्तान्प्राप्तान्शरान्शरैः। क्षुरप्रेण धनुस्तस्य चिच्छेद हरिरव्ययः
As they struck each other with arrows, Harī, the imperishable, cut his bow with a razor-edged arrow.
ततश्च पातयामास घोटकं वृषरूपिणम्। स दैत्यश्शूलहस्तोथ प्रदुद्राव जगत्पतिम्
Then he made the horse, which had the form of a bull, fall; that demon, holding a spear, fled from the Lord of the world.
भ्रामयित्वा ततः शूलं जघान परमेश्वरम्। त्रिभिश्चिच्छेद बाणैश्च शूलं कालानलप्रभम्
After whirling the spear, he struck the Supreme Lord; but with three arrows, he cut the spear, which shone like the fire of time.
ततः क्रूरो महाबाहुर्मधुर्मायातिमायिकः। देवीरूपं समास्थाय सिंहस्थः प्रययौ हरिः
Then the fierce, mighty-armed Madhū, master of illusion, took the form of a goddess and, seated on a lion, advanced toward Hari.
शरैर्बहुविधैर्विष्णुं जघानैवाब्रवीद्वचः। स्वामी तु मे सुरश्रेष्ठ त्वयैव पातितो युधि
He struck Viṣṇu with many kinds of arrows and spoke: 'O best of gods, my master has been cast down by you in battle.'
अहं त्वां च हनिष्यामि सुतौ स्कंदविनायकौ। उक्तवंतं च दैतेयं जघान बहुमार्गणैः
'I will slay you and your sons, Skanda and Vināyaka.' Having spoken thus, the demon was struck with many arrows.
स पपात महीपृष्ठे गतासुर्लोहितोद्गिरः। पितरौ निहतौ दृष्ट्वा मायाबद्धो महाबलः
He fell to the earth, his life departed, blood flowing; seeing his parents slain, the mighty one was bound by illusion.
स्कंदः शक्तिं समादाय प्रायाद्योधयितुं हरिम्। ततो धाताऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं स्कंदं मोहप्रपीडितम्
Skanda, taking up his spear, advanced to fight Hari; then Dhātā spoke words to Skanda, who was afflicted by delusion.
पश्य ते पितरौ दूरे पश्यंतौ युद्धमीदृशम्। अंतरिक्षे भ्रमंतौ च संस्थितौ लोकसाक्षिणौ
'See your parents afar, watching this battle; wandering in the sky, they stand as witnesses to the worlds.'
एतच्छ्रुत्वा ततो दृष्ट्वा तत्रैवांतरधीयत। ततो धुंधुश्च सुंधुश्च भ्रातरावतिदर्पितौ
Hearing this and seeing them, he vanished right there; then Dhuṃdhu and Suṃdhu, the brothers, became exceedingly arrogant.
वधं प्रति हरेर्युद्धे पेततुर्गरुडोपरि। खड्गहस्तं च धुंधुं च सगदं सुंधुमेव च
For the killing of Hari in battle, they fell upon Garuḍa; Dhuṃdhu with a sword in hand, and Suṃdhu with a mace.
चिच्छेद नंदकेनैकं गदया सादयत्परम्। पेततुस्तौ धरापृष्ठे प्रवीरौ क्षतविक्षतौ
With Nandaka, he cut down one, and with the mace struck the other; both heroes fell to the earth, wounded and battered.
मधुस्तदागतस्तूर्णमंतर्धानं तमोवृतः। पातयामास विष्णौ च मायया शतपर्वतान्
Then Madhū arrived swiftly, concealed by darkness; with illusion, he cast a hundred mountains upon Viṣṇu.
ततस्तान्पर्वतांश्छित्वा तमसोऽन्तर्गतो युधि। क्रोधात्सुदर्शनेनैव शिरश्छित्वा निपातितः
Then, cutting those mountains, he entered the darkness in battle; out of anger, with Sudarśana, he cut off the head and it fell.
ततो ब्रह्मादिभिर्देवैश्शंभुना त्रिदशैरपि। मधुसूदन इतिख्यातिर्विष्णोर्लोकेषु कारिता
Then by Brahmā and the other gods, by Śaṃbhu and the thirty gods, the fame of Viṣṇu as 'Madhusūdana' was established in the worlds.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे मधुवधोनामद्विसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the first section of Creation, the seventy-second chapter named 'The Slaying of Madhu.'
व्यास उवाच- ततो वृत्रो महातेजा दैत्यानां प्रवरो युधि। दिग्गजाढ्यं गजारूढः प्राद्रवद्बलसूदनम्
Vyāsa said: Then Vṛtra, of great brilliance, foremost among the demons in battle, mounted on an elephant, rushed toward the destroyer of forces.
आगच्छंतं ततो वृत्रं शरैः कालानलप्रभैः। विव्याध सर्वगात्रेषु द्विरदस्थो महाहवे
As Vṛtra approached, mounted on the elephant, he was pierced in all his limbs by arrows shining like the fire of time in the great battle.
ततो वृत्रस्तु शीर्षं च जिष्णोरेव पतत्रिणा। विव्याध सहसा तेन स चचाल महाबलः
Then Vṛtra suddenly struck the head of the victorious one, the wielder of the thunderbolt, and that mighty one was shaken.
आत्मानं च समाश्वास्य धनुरुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्। ववर्ष शरवर्षेण तस्य दैत्यस्य विग्रहे
Regaining his composure, the valiant one raised his bow and showered a rain of arrows upon the body of that demon.
शरांश्छित्वा बिभेदाशु शरैराशीविषोपमैः। शतक्रतुं महावीर्यः सर्वदेवाधिपं युधि
Cutting down the arrows, the mighty Vṛtra swiftly pierced Śatakratu, the lord of all the gods, in battle with arrows like venomous serpents.
ततः शरसहस्रैस्तु दैत्यं विव्याध देवराट्। परस्परं शरा यांति यथा सप्ताश्व रश्मयः
Then the king of the gods struck the demon with thousands of arrows, and their arrows met each other like the rays of the sun's seven horses.
