Thousands fell to the earth from the blows of swords; thus, after a very long time had passed in that great conflict—

Then Namuci, the cruel one, displayed a magical weapon: a tamasic (darkness-producing) missile, which pervaded all three worlds without interruption.
The hosts of gods and asuras could no longer see one another; nor could the sun, moon, planets, or the fires of the celestials be seen.
In that impenetrable darkness, not even a ray of light was visible; then, the demon swiftly attacked with arrows resembling tongues of fire.
All the gods were shattered, and at Indra's feet, their bodies pierced by arrows, they fell to the ground.
Other heroes, broken in spirit, fled in all ten directions; recognizing this deceit, Hari, worshipped by all the gods—
Then released a gentle weapon in the sky, shining with the brilliance of a hundred suns; seeing it suspended, he struck with a mighty spear adorned with many bells.
He struck the demon in the chest, and the demon fell down, overcome with pain; after a long time regaining consciousness, the daitya was seized by furious wrath.
Rushing swiftly, he seized Airavata, the best of elephants, and began to terrify Indra’s elephant with great anger.
Grasping the elephant along with Indra, he hurled it to the earth; then Indra, fallen to the ground, was for a moment overcome with confusion.
The lord of the daityas, leaping and standing between the elephant’s tusks, sought to seize Indra, intending to kill the lord of the herd.

With his sword, he struck off the head of that foremost asura and cast it down; all the gods rejoiced, the gandharvas sang sweetly, and the delighted sages praised the best of the gods.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purana, in the first section on creation, the seventy-first chapter named 'The Slaying of Namuci' is concluded.
Vyasa said: Mounting a divine chariot, bow in hand and endowed with strength, he went before Madhava in the midst of the gods and asuras.
Overcome by great anger, Madhu, the destroyer of immortals, spoke harsh and unchanging words to Hari, the Lord.
'Narayana, do you not know the law of battle? How can you, by unjust and wrongful means, cause destruction and feel no sorrow?'
'By this connection with impurity, and by the actions done, the status of the gods is lost; I will create a different creation.'

Then Mādhava pierced them with arrows shining like thunderbolts; with many arrows he struck Madhu on every limb.
The demon became concealed by illusion; and those foremost among the gods—heroes such as Rudra and others, the thirty gods, bearers of strength—
The goddesses of various kinds, armed and mounted, the commanders, the hosts of gods, the lords of the worlds, Hari and Viṣṇu—
Other gods, including the planets and so forth, all gathered and fought; but then, by Madhu’s illusion, the gods were surely vanquished.

Meanwhile, Viṣṇu took up the Sudarśana discus and, through illusion, struck the demons and the gods in the midst of battle.
Then, cutting off their heads by the thousands, the Lord of the gods caused them to fall—both the demons and those of divine nature.
Thus, the Lord drove away other demons from the battle; seeing this, all the sages and gods were filled with wonder.
From ear to ear, the gods and groups of sages spoke among themselves: 'Hari, the imperishable Lord, is always the sole protector of the gods.'
