दृष्ट्वा शक्रं महावीर्यं नमुचिर्दैत्यपुंगवः। अब्रवीद्वासवं संख्ये वचनं सानुगं तदा
Seeing mighty Śakra, Namuci, the foremost of Daityas, spoke these words to Vāsava in the midst of battle, along with his followers.
प्राकृतं निर्जरं हत्वा न यशोस्ति न च प्रियम्। न लाभकृतकं वापि न जयस्तु पुरष्टुत
By killing an ordinary immortal, there is neither glory nor pleasure, nor is there any gain or celebrated victory.
तस्मात्वयि हतेत्रैव सर्वं भवति शाश्वतम्। देवराज्यं प्रलप्स्यामि सुखं भोग्यं सुरालये
Therefore, only by slaying you here does everything become eternal; I shall seize the kingdom of the gods and enjoy happiness in the abode of the immortals.
तमब्रवीन्महातेजाः शक्रः परपुरंजयः। शूरता वाक्यमात्रेण सर्वत्र सुलभा भवेत्
To him, the mighty Indra, conqueror of enemy cities, replied: 'Bravery is easily found everywhere in words alone.'
महापराक्रमं यद्वा अस्ति ते दानवाधम। दर्शयस्वाहवे वीर्यं पुरं नेष्यामि भास्करेः
If you have great valor, O lowest of Dānavas, show your strength in battle; I will not take the city of the Sun.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजाश्चुकोप दैत्यपुंगवः। पंचभिर्निशितैर्बाणैर्जघान सुरसत्तमम्
Hearing this, the mighty Daitya chief became enraged and struck the best of gods with five sharp arrows.
तांस्तु चिच्छेद मघवा क्षुरप्रैः पंचभिर्द्रुतम्। जग्मतुस्तौ महावीर्यौ समरे विषयैषिणौ
Maghavān swiftly cut those five arrows with five razor-headed shafts; those two heroes, desiring victory, advanced in battle.
अन्योन्यं सहसा वेगाच्छरैश्चिच्छिदतुः शरान्। बिभिदातेथ गात्राणि विशिखैर्भिदुरोपमैः
Suddenly, with speed, they cut each other's arrows with arrows, and pierced each other's bodies with shafts like splitters.
अत्यपूर्वं कृतं कर्म ताभ्यामेव रणे भृशम्। लाघवं शरसंधान ग्रहमोक्षं सुदुर्लभम्
Those two performed in battle extraordinary feats, difficult to match—speed in stringing and releasing arrows, rarely attained.
दृष्ट्वा तु विस्मयं जग्मुर्देवासुरगणास्तदा। एतस्मिन्नंतरे दैत्यो मायास्संप्रमुमोच ह
Seeing this, the hosts of gods and demons were amazed; meanwhile, the Daitya released his magic powers.
विशिखाः शतशस्तत्र विनिश्चेरुस्समंततः। शक्रः कोपात्पुनः शीघ्रं धनुरुद्यम्य वीर्यवान्
Hundreds of arrows then issued forth on all sides; Śakra, enraged, quickly raised his bow with vigor.
जघान विशिखैरुग्रैः सर्वगात्रेषु संज्वलन्। ततो मार्गणसाहस्रैरष्टभिस्त्वधिकं तथा
He struck him with fierce arrows blazing in all his limbs; then, with more than a thousand shafts, and eight in addition.
बिभिदाते ततोन्योन्यं चिच्छिदाते परस्परम्। शरैर्निरंतराकाशं ददृशुस्तत्र संयुगे
They struck and wounded each other, cutting one another down; in that battle, the sky appeared filled without gap by their arrows.
निपतंति धरापृष्ठे खड्गपातैः सहस्रशः। एवं सुदीर्घकाले तु गते तस्मिन्महाहवे
Thousands fell to the earth from the blows of swords; thus, after a very long time had passed in that great conflict—
मायास्त्रं दर्शयामास क्रूरकृन्नमुचिस्तदा। तामसं त्रिषुलोकेषु कृतं स्यात्तु निरंतरम्
Then Namuci, the cruel one, displayed a magical weapon: a tamasic (darkness-producing) missile, which pervaded all three worlds without interruption.
परस्परं न पश्यंति देवासुरगणा भृशम्। सूर्यचंद्रग्रहाणां च वह्नीनां च दिवौकसाम्
The hosts of gods and asuras could no longer see one another; nor could the sun, moon, planets, or the fires of the celestials be seen.
तस्मिंस्तमसि दुष्पारे गभस्तिर्नैव दृश्यते। दैत्यस्य च ततस्तूर्णं शरैरग्निशिखोपमैः
In that impenetrable darkness, not even a ray of light was visible; then, the demon swiftly attacked with arrows resembling tongues of fire.
विभग्नाः सर्वदेवाश्च शक्रश्चरणसंमुखे। शरैर्विभिन्नदेहास्तु निपेतुर्धरणीतले
All the gods were shattered, and at Indra's feet, their bodies pierced by arrows, they fell to the ground.
प्रभग्नाश्चापरे शूरास्संयांति च दिशो दश। कूटं तस्य परिज्ञाय सर्वदेवार्चितो हरिः
Other heroes, broken in spirit, fled in all ten directions; recognizing this deceit, Hari, worshipped by all the gods—
सौम्यमस्त्रं मुमोचाथ दिवि सूर्यशतप्रभम्। विलंबितं समालोक्य शक्त्या च बहुघंटया
Then released a gentle weapon in the sky, shining with the brilliance of a hundred suns; seeing it suspended, he struck with a mighty spear adorned with many bells.
जघानोरसि दैत्यस्य स पपात व्यथान्वितः। चिरात्संलभ्य संज्ञां च दैतेयः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः
He struck the demon in the chest, and the demon fell down, overcome with pain; after a long time regaining consciousness, the daitya was seized by furious wrath.
गत्वा वेगात्सुरश्रेष्ठमैरावतं दधार ह। त्रासयामास सुतरामिंद्रस्य द्विरदं रुषा
Rushing swiftly, he seized Airavata, the best of elephants, and began to terrify Indra’s elephant with great anger.
धृत्वा स तु गजं सेंद्रं मुमोच धरणीतले। ततो भूमिगतः शक्रः कश्मलं च क्षणं गतः
Grasping the elephant along with Indra, he hurled it to the earth; then Indra, fallen to the ground, was for a moment overcome with confusion.
अवप्लुत्य स दैत्येंद्रो गजदंतांतरस्थितः। शक्रं ग्रहीतुकामस्य वधार्थं यूथपस्य सः
The lord of the daityas, leaping and standing between the elephant’s tusks, sought to seize Indra, intending to kill the lord of the herd.
असिनाऽसुरमुख्यस्य शिरश्छित्वा न्यपातयत्। सर्वे प्रजहृषुर्देवा गंधर्वा ललितं जगुः। मुदितास्ते च मुनयः स्तुवंति सुरसत्तमम्
With his sword, he struck off the head of that foremost asura and cast it down; all the gods rejoiced, the gandharvas sang sweetly, and the delighted sages praised the best of the gods.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे द्वितीय नमुचिवधोनामैकसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purana, in the first section on creation, the seventy-first chapter named 'The Slaying of Namuci' is concluded.
व्यास उवाच- दिव्यं रथं समास्थाय धनुर्हस्तो बलैर्युतः। गत्वा च माधवं संख्ये देवासुरगणाग्रतः
Vyasa said: Mounting a divine chariot, bow in hand and endowed with strength, he went before Madhava in the midst of the gods and asuras.
क्रोधेन महताविष्टो मधुर्निर्जरमर्दनः। अब्रवीत्परुषं वाक्यमव्ययं हरिमीश्वरम्
Overcome by great anger, Madhu, the destroyer of immortals, spoke harsh and unchanging words to Hari, the Lord.
नारायण न जानासि युद्धधर्ममितः कथम्। अन्यायाद्दुर्वधोपायं कृत्वा नष्टो न शोचसि
'Narayana, do you not know the law of battle? How can you, by unjust and wrongful means, cause destruction and feel no sorrow?'
अनेन पंकयोगेन व्यवहारा कृतस्य च। सुरत्वं चोपनष्टं स्यादन्यसृष्टिं करोम्यहम्
'By this connection with impurity, and by the actions done, the status of the gods is lost; I will create a different creation.'
