प्रचिच्छेदासिना वेगान्मुसलं चातिदारुणं। तारेयः शक्तिमादाय जघान क्रौंचदारणम्
With swift sword, he cut apart the dreadful mace; Tāraka’s son, taking up a spear, struck the one who split the Krauncha mountain.
सोपि शक्तिं मुमोचाथ अमोघां दुष्टघातिनीम्। ततः संदह्य सा शक्तिर्विश्वप्रलयकारिणी
He too released an unfailing spear, destroyer of the wicked; that spear, burning fiercely, capable of bringing about universal dissolution—
यमदंडसमानं च भित्वा पुनर्गुहं गता। स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां चालयंश्च वसुंधरां
—and equal to the staff of Yama, pierced him and returned again to Guha; he, life departed, fell to the earth, shaking the ground.
पुष्पधूपादिभिः स्कंदः सर्वदेवैः प्रपूजितः
Skanda was then worshipped by all the gods with flowers, incense, and other offerings.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे तारेयवधोनामैकोनसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Purāṇa, in the first section on creation, ends the sixty-ninth chapter entitled 'The Slaying of Tāreya.'
व्यास उवाच- ततो देवांतको दैत्यो व्यनदत्समरं प्रति। रणं चकार धर्मेण संदष्टौष्ठपुटो बली
Vyāsa said: Then the Daitya named Devāntaka roared towards the battle; biting his lower lip in wrath, the mighty one engaged in combat according to dharma.
स गत्वा चाब्रवीद्वाक्यं सर्वलोकविगर्हितं। न जानासि महद्धर्मं दुष्ट मोहाद्यथाक्रमम्
He went and spoke words condemned by all the worlds: 'You do not know the great dharma, corrupted by delusion as is fitting.'
पापपुण्यप्रयोगेण निग्रहानुग्रहे प्रभुः। अहं च निर्मितो धात्रा करोमि तव शासनम्
By the operation of merit and sin, the Lord is the one who restrains and grants favor; and I, created by the Creator, carry out your command.
न जानासि यतो धर्मं कालमृत्यु पुरःसरः। न रोगो न जरा कालो न मृत्युर्न च किंकरः
Because you do not know dharma, with Time and Death leading the way: there is neither disease nor old age, neither Time nor Death nor any servant.
धर्मात्प्रचलितः कर्मी कष्टं याति दिवानिशम्। उक्तं वसुं महावीर्यं यमं धर्मैकसाक्षिकम्
One who has deviated from dharma, acting wrongly, suffers day and night; it is said that the mighty Vasus and Yama are sole witnesses to dharma.
स जघान त्रिभिर्बाणैः कालमृत्युसमप्रभैः। प्रचिच्छेद स धर्मात्मा ते त्वन्यैर्विशिखैस्त्रिभिः
He struck with three arrows, equal in power to Time and Death; that righteous one cut them off with three other arrows.
ततस्तूच्चैः शरैः प्राज्यैर्युगांतानलसप्रभैः। निजघान यमं संख्ये स चिच्छेद शरैः शरान्
Then, with loud and mighty arrows, blazing like the fire at the end of an age, he struck Yama in battle, and Yama cut down his arrows with arrows.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे क्रुद्धौ परस्परजयैषिणौ। जघ्नतुः समरेन्योन्यं महाबलपराक्रमौ
Meanwhile, both enraged and seeking victory over each other, they struck one another in battle, both possessing great strength and valor.
अहोरात्रं तयोर्युद्धमवर्त्तत सुदारुणम्। एतस्मिन्नन्तरे क्रुद्धः शक्त्या प्रशमनं रुषा
Their fierce battle continued day and night; meanwhile, angered, he sought to pacify with a spear, in wrath.
बिभेद दैत्यशार्दूलो ह्यहंकारयुतो बली। तामेवाथ रुषा धर्मो गृहीत्वा शक्तिकां द्रुतं
The mighty tiger among demons, filled with pride, pierced with a spear; then, in anger, Dharma quickly seized the same spear.
निजघान तयैवामुंस्तनयोरंतरे भृशम्। स विह्वलित सर्वांगो मुखादागतशोणितः
With that very spear, he struck him hard between the two sons; his whole body was shaken, and blood flowed from his mouth.
ततः क्रुद्धो महातेजा धृत्वा दंडं सुदारुणम्। अमोघं पातयामास तस्य दैत्यस्य विग्रहे
Then, enraged and of great brilliance, he took up a dreadful staff and cast it unfailingly upon the body of that demon.
साश्वं रथं तथा सूतं योद्धारं शस्त्रसंचयम्। चकार भस्मसात्तं च शमनः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः
With his horse, chariot, charioteer, warrior, and array of weapons, the pacifier, overcome by wrath, reduced them all to ashes.
पतिते च तथा दैत्ये दुर्धर्षो नाम दानवः। शमनं शूलहस्तस्तु प्रदुद्राव जिघांसया
When the demon had fallen thus, a Danava named Durdharsha, holding a spear, rushed at the pacifier with intent to kill.
शूलहस्तं समायांतं बडवानलसन्निभम्। आससाद रणे मृत्युः शक्तिहस्तोतिनिर्भयः
As he approached with a spear, blazing like the submarine fire, Death met him in battle, holding a spear, fearless.
स च दृष्ट्वाऽसुरो मृत्युं शूलेनैव जघान ह। शक्तिं चैव ततो मृत्युः प्रचिक्षेप रणाजिरे
Seeing Death, the demon struck him with the spear; then Death hurled his own spear on the battlefield.
संदह्य सहसा शूलं वह्निकूटसमप्रभम्। दैत्यस्य हृदयं भित्वा गता सा च धरातलम्
Burning the spear at once, shining like a mass of fire, it pierced the demon's heart and fell to the earth.
सरथः स पपातोर्व्यां शक्तिजर्जरविग्रहः। अथान्यो दुर्मुखो मृत्युं कृष्टचापो महाबलः
He fell to the ground with his chariot, his body shattered by the spear; then another, Durmukha, mighty and drawing his bow, faced Death.
खड्गचर्मधरः कालो रथ एव गतोभवत्। दृष्ट्वा तं विशिखैः प्राज्यैर्जघान स यमं रणे
Kala, bearing sword and shield, mounted the chariot; seeing him, Durmukha struck Yama in battle with mighty arrows.
स चाप्लत्य रथाद्देवो ह्यसिना च सकुंडलम्। शिरश्चिच्छेद सहसा पातयित्वा च भूतले
And that god, with a sudden stroke of his sword, cut off his head along with the earrings, casting it down to the earth from the chariot.
हतशेषं बलं सर्वं प्रदुद्राव दिशो दश
All the remaining army, defeated, fled in all ten directions.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे देवांतकर्दुर्धर्षदुर्मुखवधोनाम सप्ततिमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the seventieth chapter, called 'The Slaying of Antaka, Durdharsha, and Durmukha,' in the first section on Creation of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
व्यास उवाच- अथान्यो नमुचिः क्रुद्धः स्यंदनस्थो दिवौकसः। विशिखैरर्दयामस घोरैराशीविषोपमैः
Vyāsa said: Then another, Namuci, enraged and standing on his chariot, attacked the gods with terrible arrows, like venomous serpents.
ततस्तु संयुगे देवाः सिद्धकिन्नरपन्नगाः। न शक्नुवंति बाणानां वेगं सोढुं समंततः
Thereupon, in that battle, the gods, Siddhas, Kinnaras, and Nāgas could not withstand the force of those arrows from every side.
रथमुच्चैश्श्रवोश्वेन युक्तं मातलिनेरितम्। पुरुहूतः समास्थाय प्रागमत्तं महाबलम्
Then Puruhūta, of great strength, mounted the chariot driven by Mātali and yoked with the horse Uccaiḥśravas.
