पतिता धरणीपृष्ठे केचिद्भग्ना रणाजिरे। दृष्ट्वा तस्य महत्कर्म दारुणं लोकभीषणम्
Some fell to the ground, broken in the field of battle; seeing his great and dreadful deed, terrifying to the world—
शशंसुर्ऋषयो देवास्तत्र शिष्टाः प्रचुक्रुशुः। अथ क्रुद्धो महातेजाश्शतक्रतुररिंदमः
—the sages reported it, and the remaining gods cried out; then, Indra, destroyer of enemies, filled with great fury and energy—
जघान शरसंदोहैर्बलं बलवतां वरम्। सोपि क्रुद्धो बलो युद्धे तथा शक्रं ससंभ्रमः
He struck down the mighty host of the powerful with volleys of arrows; yet that enraged Bala, too, fought Indra in battle, agitated.
रुधिरेणावसिक्तांगौ प्रसृतेन महाबलौ। तौ यथा माधवे मासि पुष्पितौ किंशुकद्रुमौ
Their bodies, drenched with flowing blood, those two mighty ones looked like blossoming kimshuka trees in the month of spring.
चक्राणि च सहस्राणि शूलानि मुसलानि च। निचखान रणे शक्रे चपले चासुरोत्तमः
Thousands of discs, spears, and maces did the foremost of Asuras hurl at Indra in battle, swift and unsteady.
तानि चक्राणि शूलानि निचकर्त्त शरोत्तमैः। सुरराट्सहसा भ्रांतो लीलया समरे बली
The lord of the gods, powerful and bewildered, swiftly cut down those discs and spears in battle with his excellent arrows, as if in sport.
स च दैत्यो महातेजाः शक्त्या चैव पुरंदरम्। निजघान तदा तूर्णं गजस्थं च स्तनांतरे
Then that mighty and radiant Daitya struck Purandara with a spear, piercing him quickly in the chest as he sat upon his elephant.
तया विनिहतः शक्रः प्रचचाल गजोपरि। लब्धसंज्ञो बलं जिष्णुर्बिभेद दनुजं क्षणात्
Struck by that weapon, Indra wavered atop the elephant; regaining consciousness, the victorious one instantly pierced the demon.
रथसंस्थस्य हस्तौ च धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुणा। चर्मतीक्ष्णं ध्वजं तस्य शरेणैकेन वीरहा
From his chariot, he severed the demon's arms and bow with an arrow, and with a single sharp shaft, the slayer of heroes cut down his sturdy shield and banner.
चतुर्भिर्निशितैर्बाणैर्विव्याध चतुरो हयान्। शरेणैकेन सूतस्य शिरश्चिच्छेद तत्क्षणात्
With four keen arrows, he pierced the four horses, and with a single arrow, he instantly cut off the charioteer's head.
छिन्नधन्वा हतरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः। निपत्य मूर्च्छितः पृथ्व्यां मुहूर्तान्मृत्युमाप सः
His bow broken, chariot destroyed, horses and charioteer slain, he fell to the earth unconscious, and in a moment met his death.
अथ क्रुद्धो महादैत्यो नमुचिः सुरदर्पहा। गदामादाय सहसा स जघान महागजम्
Then the great and wrathful Daitya Namuci, subduer of the pride of the gods, seized his mace and struck the great elephant at once.
यथा मेरुगिरेः शृंगे वज्रपातो भवेद्ध्रुवम्। तथैव च महाशब्दो ह्यभवल्लोमहर्षणः
Just as a thunderbolt might surely strike the peak of Mount Meru, so too a tremendous, hair-raising sound arose.
प्रहारेणार्दितः पद्मी संचचाल स विह्वलः। रुधिरेणावसिक्तांगो विमुखो वेदनातुरः
Struck by the blow, the elephant of Indra reeled, bewildered; his body drenched in blood, he turned away, overcome by pain.
शतक्रतुं विधावंति शतशोथ सहस्रशः। अर्धचंद्रैक्षुःरप्रैश्च चिच्छेद पाकशासनः
Hundreds and thousands rushed at Shatakratu, but Pakaśāsana cut them down with arrows shaped like crescent moons and sugarcane leaves.
जंतुभिस्तस्य मायाभिरर्दितास्सुरपुंगवाः। भूमौ निपतिताः केचित्केचित्सुप्ता रथोपरि
Tormented by his magical illusions, the foremost of the gods fell to the ground, some lying unconscious atop their chariots.
दृष्ट्वा तस्य महत्कर्म माधवो विशिखांस्तथा। जंतुभूतान्स चक्रेण चिच्छेद देहलग्नकान्
Seeing his great feat and those beings transformed by magic, Madhava with his discus cut down those clinging to the bodies.
ततो जिष्णुस्त्रिभिर्बाणैः पातयामास भूतले। पृथिव्यां पतितो दैत्यो मूर्च्छितस्खलितः पुनः
Then the victorious one, with three arrows, struck the demon down to the earth; fallen to the ground, the Daitya again collapsed, unconscious.
दधार मुद्गरं घोरं शक्रं हंतुं समुद्यतः। ततो जघान मघवा कुलिशेन महासुरम्
He seized a dreadful mace, intent on killing Indra; but then Maghavan struck the great Asura with his thunderbolt.
स पपात महीपृष्ठे क्षतवक्षा महाबलः। साधुसाध्विति देवाश्च सिद्धाश्चैव महर्षयः५० 1.67.50 अपूजयंस्तदा शक्रं बहुभिः पुष्पवृष्टिभिः। ततो दैत्यगणाः सर्वे भीतास्तत्र प्रदुद्रुवुः। गीतं गायंति गंधर्वा ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
He fell to the earth, his mighty chest wounded; the gods, Siddhas, and great sages praised Indra, showering him with many flowers. Then all the Daityas, terrified, fled from there; the Gandharvas sang, and the Apsaras danced.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे बलनमुचिवधोनाम सप्तषष्टितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-seventh chapter, called 'The Slaying of Bala and Namuci,' in the first section, Creation, of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
व्यास उवाच- बलं च निहतं दृष्ट्वा नमुचिं च स्वकाग्रजम्। मुचिस्तत्राब्रवीद्वाक्यं ज्येष्ठो मे सूदितस्त्वया
Vyāsa said: Seeing Bala slain and Namuci, his own elder brother, Muci then spoke these words: 'My eldest has been killed by you.'
परोक्षेणाधुना त्वां च शरैर्नेष्यामि भास्करिम्। तमब्रवीन्महातेजाः शक्रः सर्वसुरार्चितः
Now, in your absence, I will send you to the sun with arrows as well.' To him, the mighty Indra, honored by all the gods, replied:
भ्रातुस्ते धर्मपंथानमिदानीं लप्स्यसे ध्रुवम्। वह्नेरुष्णमविज्ञाय प्रमोहाच्छलभा यथा
You will now surely attain the path of your brother's fate; just as, out of delusion, moths enter fire not knowing its heat.
सहसा प्रविशंत्यग्निं तथा मां योद्धुमिच्छसि। एवं ब्रुवाणमिन्द्रं च जघान विशिखैस्त्रिभिः
So too, in your haste to fight me, you rush into destruction as moths into fire.' As Indra spoke thus, Muci struck him with three arrows.
स चिच्छेद त्रिभिर्बाणैः शक्रः परपुरंजयः। ततो जघान दशभिरिंद्रमैरावणं त्रिभिः
Indra, conqueror of enemy cities, cut those three arrows apart; then, with ten more, he struck Airāvata, and with three, Muci.
सप्तभिर्मातलिं छित्वा नादैरुच्चैर्ननाद ह। शक्रं प्रति पुनर्दैत्यो भ्रामयामास संभ्रमात्
He struck Mātali with seven arrows, and roared loudly with great sounds; then the demon, agitated, began to whirl Indra around.
आयसीं तां गदां कोपान्महाबलपराक्रमः। ततस्तु लाघवाच्छक्रो जघान कुलिशेन हि
With anger and immense strength, he seized his iron mace; but Indra, swift of action, struck him with the thunderbolt.
भिदुरस्यावपातेन गतासुर्निपपात ह। दनुजस्य प्रपातेन संचचाल वसुंधरा
Struck by the thunderbolt's blow, the demon fell lifeless to the ground; as the demon fell, the earth itself trembled.
देवाः प्रचक्रुर्नृत्यानि दानवा विप्रदुद्रुवुः
The gods began to dance, while the Dānavas fled in all directions.
