व्यास उवाच- भ्रातरं निहतं दृष्ट्वा कालेयो नाम दानवः। चित्ररथं प्रदुद्राव धृत्वा बाणं सकार्मुकम्
Vyāsa said: Seeing his brother slain, the demon named Kāleya rushed toward Citraratha, holding a bow with an arrow ready.
दृष्ट्वासुरं विधावंतं कालमृत्युसमप्रभम्। अरौत्सीत्तं महावीर्यो जयंतः पाकशासनिः
Seeing the demon fleeing, fierce as Death itself, the mighty Jayanta, son of Indra, challenged him.
अब्रवीच्च महातेजा दैतेयं सुरसत्तमः। तथ्यं धर्माभिसंयुक्तं लोकद्वयहितं ध्रुवम्
The illustrious best of the gods spoke to the demon, words true, joined with righteousness, and certainly for the welfare of both worlds.
शस्त्राभिघातदुःखार्तं कश्मलं चान्यसंयुतम्। प्रभग्नं च निरस्तं च यो हंति स च बालिशः
One who kills another who is afflicted by the pain of weapons, overwhelmed by distress, broken and cast aside, is indeed foolish.
सुचिरं रौरवं भुक्त्वा तस्य दासो भवेच्चिरम्। तस्मान्मामुं प्रयुध्यस्व युद्धधर्मस्थितो भव
After long suffering in Raurava hell, he will become that one's servant for a long time; therefore, fight me, and stand firm in the law of battle.
जयंतमब्रवीद्वाक्यं कालेयः क्रोधमूर्च्छितः। निहत्य भ्रातृहंतारमथ त्वांहन्मि सांप्रतम्
Kāleya, overcome with anger, spoke to Jayanta: 'Having killed my brother's slayer, now I will kill you as well.'
ततस्तं चासुरश्रेष्ठं कालानलसमप्रभम्। जयंतो निशितैर्बाणैर्जघान सुरसत्तमः
Then Jayanta, the foremost of gods, struck that chief of demons, blazing like the fire of destruction, with sharp arrows.
निचकर्त्त शरान्सोपि त्रिभिर्विव्याध चासुरः। यथावृष्टिगणं प्राप्य नदी गैरिकवाहिनी
He cut down the arrows, and the demon pierced him with three; just as a river carrying red clay receives a multitude of rains.
तथा तौ च महावीर्यौ न क्षीणौ न च कातरौ। न शर्म परिलेभाते परस्परजयैषिणौ
Thus, both mighty warriors neither weakened nor fearful, found no comfort, each seeking victory over the other.
अथ तस्य च दैत्यस्य धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुणा। यंतारं पंचभिर्बाणैः पातयामास भूतले
Then, with an arrow, he cut the demon's bow, and with five arrows made his charioteer fall to the ground.
अष्टाभिर्निशितैर्बाणैश्चतुरोश्वानपातयात्। शक्तिं संगृह्य भूमिष्ठः कुमारं च जघान ह
With eight sharp arrows, he brought down four horses; taking up a spear, standing on the earth, he struck the prince.
गदया पीडितं साश्वं सवरूथं सकूबरम्। पातयित्वा धरण्यां च सिंहनादं ननाद ह
Struck with the mace, along with his horses, chariot, and banner, he was thrown to the ground, and roared like a lion.
लाघवात्स धरां गत्वा गदापाणिरुपस्थितः। वज्रपाताद्यथा शब्दो लोकानां दुःसहो भवेत्
With agility, he reached the ground, mace in hand; the sound was as unbearable to the worlds as the thunderbolt's strike.
तथा तयोर्गदापाते शब्दः स्यात्तु मुहुर्मुहुः। एवं तयोर्गदायुद्धं यावदब्दचतुष्टयम्
Thus, the sound of their mace blows echoed again and again; their mace battle continued for four years.
प्रभग्ने ते गदे खस्थौ खड्गचर्मधरावुभौ। तदा पदातिनोर्युद्धमद्भुतं लोमहर्षणं
When their maces were broken, both stood in the sky, wielding sword and shield; then the battle of the foot soldiers was wondrous and hair-raising.
दृष्ट्वा च विस्मयं जग्मुर्देवासुरमहोरगाः। खड्गपातैर्मुहूर्तांते तयोश्छिन्ने तु वर्मणी
Seeing this, the gods, demons, and great serpents were astonished; at the end of the moment, their armor was cut by sword blows.
अभवत्खड्गयुद्धं च तयोर्युद्धातिशीलिनोः। दधार चिकुरे तस्य जयंतो भीमविक्रमः
A fierce sword-fight arose between those two, both skilled in battle; Jayanta of terrible valor seized him by the hair.
शिरश्छित्वास्य खड्गेन पातयामास भूतले। ततस्तु जयशब्देन देवाः सर्वे ननंदिरे
He struck off his head with the sword and cast it to the ground; then, with cries of victory, all the gods rejoiced.
प्रभग्ना दैत्यसंघाश्च दिशः सर्वाः प्रदुद्रुवुः
The ranks of demons were shattered and fled in all directions.
इति श्रीपाद्मपुराणे प्रथमे सृष्टिखंडे कालेयवधोनाम षट्षष्टितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-sixth chapter, called 'The Slaying of Kāleya,' in the first section of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
व्यास उवाच- एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु दैत्येंद्रो हिरण्याक्षो महाबलः। सरोषश्चातिताम्राक्षो ह्यसुरानादिदेश ह
Vyāsa said: Hearing this, the mighty lord of the demons, Hiraṇyākṣa, his eyes blazing with anger, addressed the Asuras.
स्वयं गच्छामि युद्धाय देवानां विजिघांसया। नागच्छंति न युद्ध्यंते तेन मार्गाद्विशन्त्वितः
"I myself will go to battle, eager to conquer the gods; since they do not come, nor fight, let them be brought by this path."
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं शेषा दैत्यगणाधिपाः। युद्धाय प्रययुः सर्वे शूलपाशातिपंडिताः
Hearing these words, the other chiefs of the demon hosts, all skilled with spears and nooses, set out for battle.
अधिकं पूर्वसैन्याश्च तथा शतगुणैरपि। निरंतरं तथाकाशं प्रययुर्युद्धकांक्षिणः
The armies, greater than before and even a hundredfold stronger, advanced without pause into the sky, eager for war.
ततो रुद्रास्स साध्याश्च विश्वे च वसवस्तथा। स्कंदश्च गणपश्चैव विष्णुजिष्णुपुरोगमाः
Then the Rudras, Sādhyas, Viśvedevas, Vasus, Skanda, Gaṇapati, and the leaders led by Viṣṇu and Jishnu also went forth.
सर्वे योद्धुं गतास्ते च हृष्टा रणसमुत्सुकाः। एतस्मिन्नंतरे युद्धं देवदानवयोरपि
All of them, delighted and eager for battle, went to fight; meanwhile, the war between gods and demons began.
न भूतं न श्रुतं पूर्वं सर्वलोकभयंकरम्। शस्त्रास्त्रैबर्हुधा युक्तं शिशिरेणेव काननम्
Never before seen or heard, it was a battle terrifying to all the worlds, filled with countless weapons and missiles, like a forest struck by winter.
धरां स्वर्गौक आकाशं संरुध्य युद्धमाबभौ। अन्योन्यं जघ्नुराकाशे तथान्योन्यं महीतले
The battle spread, filling earth, heaven, and sky; they struck each other in the air and likewise on the ground.
शक्तिभिर्मुसलैर्भल्लैर्बहुभिः शरवृष्टिभिः। दारुणैः खड्गपातैश्च तथा चक्रपरःश्वधैः
With spears, maces, arrows, and showers of darts, with fierce sword-blows, and with discus and battle-axes,
अन्यायुधैश्च विविधैर्निर्जघ्नुस्ते परस्परम्। अभवन्घोररूपाणि धराकाशे व्ययानि च
And with many other diverse weapons, they struck one another; dreadful forms perished on earth and in the sky.
