Vaikuntha is described as having undivided limbs, a single discus, and a banner; above the doorway is a beautiful line shaped like a gunja berry.
Shridhara, the deity, is marked by a garland of forest flowers, has the form of a kadamba blossom, and is adorned with five lines.
Vamana is also round and short, resembling the atasi flower, and is beautified by a single dot.
Then comes Sudarshana, the deity, dark in color and radiant; on the left side are the mace and discus, and on the right, a line.
Damodara is thick, with a discus set in the middle; it resembles the color of durva grass, is marked with door-like shapes, and has a yellow line as well.
Ananta is of many colors, marked by various coils, possessing many forms, and grants all desired fruits.
He whose face is seen upward in all directions and intermediate quarters is to be known as Purushottama, the giver of both enjoyment and liberation.
A linga seen at the summit, arising from the Shalagrama stone, is such that the Lord of Yogis destroys the sin of killing a Brahmin through its presence.
Padmanabha is reddish, with a lotus joined to his face; by worshiping him daily, even a poor person becomes a lord.
Marked with a discus, golden-bodied, shining with rays, abundant with golden lines, and resplendent with the luster of crystal.
Very smooth, bestowing success, the black one grants fame; the pale one burns away sin and gives the fruit of sons to fathers.
The blue one bestows wealth, the red brings disease; the rough one causes anxiety, the crooked one brings poverty.
One should know Sudarshana as one, Lakshmi-Narayana as two, the third as Achyuta, and the fourth as Janardana.
The fifth is Vasudeva, the sixth is Pradyumna, the seventh is Sankarshana, and the eighth is Purushottama.
The ninth is the nine-fold array, the tenth is of its own nature; the eleventh is Aniruddha, and the twelfth is of twelve forms.
Beyond this, the wheels are seen, called infinite; if broken, split, or damaged in a Śālagrāma stone, there is no fault.
Whichever form is desired by someone, he should worship that one with care; and whoever carries the lord of mountains on his shoulder along the path—
For him, everything in the three worlds, moving and unmoving, comes under his control; wherever there is a Śālagrāma stone, there Hari is present.
There, giving, reciting, and bathing are a hundred times greater than at Vārāṇasī, or at Kurukṣetra, Prayāga, Naimiṣa, or Puṣkara.
There, the merit is a crore-fold, and the great fruit as at Vārāṇasī; any sin a man commits, even as grave as killing a Brahmin—
All of that is quickly burned away by the worship of the Śālagrāma stone; wherever the god arising from Śālagrāma is, there is the lord of Dvārāvatī.
Wherever the two come together, there is liberation without doubt; by celibates, householders, forest-dwellers, and mendicants alike—
The food offered to Viṣṇu must be eaten; there should be no hesitation about this; in its worship, there are no mantras, no recitation, nor meditation.
There is no hymn, nor ritual conduct, in the worship of the Śālagrāma stone; but before the Śālagrāma stone, a svastika should be made with reverence.
Especially in Kārtika, it purifies up to the seventh generation; whoever makes even a tiny circle before Keśava—
With clay, metal, or other materials, he dwells in heaven for a kalpa of millions of years; and whoever for a full year worships the Agnihotra—
In Kārtika, making a svastika together—there is no doubt of this; in the case of forbidden union or eating what should not be eaten—
That sin is destroyed by making a circle at Hari's abode; any woman who daily makes a circle before Keśava—she never attains widowhood for seven births.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttarakhaṇḍa, in the section on the greatness of Kārtika, in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Satyabhāmā, is the one hundred and twentieth chapter, called 'The Greatness of Śālagrāma.'
Īśvara said: Whoever, taking shelter in the shade of the dhātrī tree, offers a rice-ball in secret—by Mādhava's grace, his ancestors attain liberation.
