Once, O child, in the desert land, a merchant's son, while traveling for trade, was tormented by ghosts at a tree.
Then, possessed by ghosts, the woman danced, and a twice-born saw her intently: 'Who are you, dancing, miserable, clothed in worn garments?'
Then she said to the twice-born: 'I have heard from the divine messengers that this noble man is about to be struck by the thunderbolt.'
'It is certain, O Brahmin, that my husband will die; meanwhile, from the heavens, a thunderbolt fell upon his head.'
It fell and landed on the half-piece of a rudraksha on the ground; then, O my son, a celestial chariot swiftly descended from my city.
Mounting it, that illustrious one now remains there for a long time; having attained a portion of me, he becomes wealthy, O dear one.
Thus, O son, one who dies with a piece of rudraksha attains a good destination; we are unable to describe the fruit for a person who bears it with knowledge.
Whether he is a devotee of Shiva, Shakti, Ganesha, or Surya, whoever dies wearing even a single rudraksha bead or garland—
Whoever recites, causes to be recited, makes others hear, or listens to this, is freed from all sins and gradually attains happiness in heaven.
Chapter Sixty-Six. Skanda said: I ask also about the purity of the fruit of another tree; for the welfare of all beings, tell us, O Lord of the world.
The Lord said: The fruit of the dhatri is supremely pure and renowned in all worlds; by planting it, a man or woman is freed from the bondage of birth.
The fruit of Vasudeva is purifying, pleasing, and auspicious; by merely eating it, one is freed from all sins.
By eating it, one gains longevity; by drinking it, the accumulation of merit; bathing with it removes misfortune, and one attains all prosperity.
In whatever house, O Mahasena, the dhatri always stands, in that house neither spirits, demons, nor rakshasas enter.
Neither Ganga, nor Gaya, nor Kashi, nor Pushkara—none of these, but the dhatri alone, on the day of Hari, is for humans.
Whoever bathes with the dhatri on the eleventh day in the bright or dark fortnight, all his sins are destroyed and he is honored in the world of Vishnu.
The dhatri fruit should always be used, for eating and for bathing; certainly, on the day of Vishnu, even by bathing alone.
On the regulated day of breaking the fast, by merely touching the dhatri, if a man eats and then breaks the fast on the eleventh day, whether bright or dark—
By a single observance of fasting, O six-faced one, he is freed from sins accumulated over seven births—of this there is no doubt.
He attains inexhaustible heaven and reaches union with Vishnu; therefore, by every effort, one should perform the dhatri vow.
O six-faced one, whoever always anoints their hair with the juice of the emblic tree, that person will never again drink their mother's milk.
By seeing, touching, or even uttering the name of the emblic, Vishnu stands before one as the granter of boons, pleased and favorable.
Wherever the fruit of the emblic is present, there Keśava abides; there Brahmā and steadfast Lakṣmī dwell—therefore, one should keep it in the home.
Misfortune departs from the place where the emblic is established; all the gods remain there, delighted, and do not leave even for a moment.
If one offers the fruit of the emblic as sacred food, even a great treasure, Vishnu is satisfied with him—more than by a hundred sacrifices.
Whoever, after bathing, worships Mādhava with the juice of the emblic, attains the desired result, whatever may be in his mind.
Likewise, remembering its qualities and worshipping with the fruit, the best of men obtains the fruit equal to a hundred thousand pieces of gold.
The state attained by the wise, by sages, and by those devoted to yoga—that very state is reached by the man devoted to the service of the emblic.
The same goal that is gained by service at holy places, by vows of various kinds, is attained by men through devoted service to the fruit of the emblic.
The favor of all the gods, of the goddesses, and of the hosts of deities is granted face-to-face by bathing and by the use of the emblic fruit.
