Whatever is recited, offered, praised, or performed with devices and mantras, all is said to yield ten million times the merit at the foot of the trembling-leaved tree.
At its root stands Viṣṇu, in the middle abides Śaṃkara, and at the top is Brahmā—who in the world would not worship such a one?
On Monday, the silent one's bath performed there, and the worship of the aśvattha, yields the fruit of giving a thousand cows.
By seven circumambulations alone, one gains the fruit of ten thousand cows; and by many more, hundreds of millions—therefore, it should always be done.
Whatever is given there—roots, fruits, water, or anything else—all that yields inexhaustible fruit, birth after birth.
There is no tree on earth like the aśvattha, which is Hari in tree form; just as the twice-born, cows, and gods are to be revered in the world,
So too, the god in the form of the aśvattha tree is considered most worthy of worship—always in planting, protecting, touching, and in acts of worship.
He gives wealth, sons, heaven, and liberation in due order; but if a person cuts even a little from the body of the aśvattha—
After experiencing a single age in hell, one is born among outcastes such as the Chandala; by uprooting the cause of that, he attains non-return.
Men remain there in the dreadful hell called Raurava; the fruit gained by planting a single Ashvattha tree is as follows.
Likewise, by planting a Champaka or an Arka tree, and by planting three of them; eight Bilva trees, and also seven Nyagrodha trees—
And ten Neem trees—the fruit of these is the same; the fruit of planting each tree has been declared, O twice-born.
Thus understanding, a righteous person who creates an artificial forest attains thousands of millions and hundreds of millions of aeons.
He reaches heaven by planting a thousand mango trees; whether fewer or more, the result is two or three times accordingly.
Having enjoyed, he may again perform the act—be he a king or a great lord; then he enjoys heaven, and afterwards a prosperous, auspicious, and blessed kingdom.
He is born with health and endowed with valor, starting from the grove itself; the fruits of which are eaten by thousands of creatures.
Birds, insects, flying creatures, moths, and others who take shelter there; and all beings who dwell in the shade, counted as separate individuals—
They become his attendants by the hundreds, honored by the gods; and all those great trees are of divine form.
Their worship should be performed as for ancestors, with service and offerings of water; and in the mortal world, those trees become his sons in every birth.
They are handsome, well-mannered, always engaged in virtuous deeds; thus, the creatures attached to the mango tree attain lordship over hosts.
The emblic, the haritaki, and others, which are of pungent, bitter, or sour origin—all these, being from the grove, are pure, always fruitful, and bestow auspiciousness.
There are palaces of gold, adorned with every jewel; aerial cars equipped with all ornaments, swift as the wind.
There are trees made of gold, always bestowing everything; giving comfort in every season, with gentle maidens like apsaras.
There, the tree-givers stand, intent on song and dance; there are special lotus ponds, and other excavated places as well.
Rivers filled with pure stones, with banks of milk and curds; and again, with foaming milk, and foods of all six tastes.
Just as enjoyment is found in the mortal world, so again in heaven, and again on earth; and by repeated practice, the grove is excavated again.
Just as a man, having performed virtuous deeds, attains heaven and lordship among mortals, so too, one who is unable to build a lotus pond but constructs a drinking water station, obtains the fruit of a lotus pond.
Here, the characteristics of a drinking water station are described as supreme, removing all sins, granting every enjoyment, pure, bestowing heaven and liberation, and enduring.
I will now declare the characteristics of a drinking water station, which increase fame: it should be established in a place lacking water, along a road, and constructed with a pavilion.
When many travelers gather, whether in summer, rainy season, or autumn, fragrant water scented with agar and other perfumes, along with betel nuts and moonstones, should be provided.
